The engineering that goes into getting even the slightest advantage in F1 is really incredible. When you consider just how advanced all the teams are being at the end of a long era of regulations the margins for improvement have to be so slim but teams still find clever ways to get an advantage. Its really because of how the media and all portrays the WDC that the WDC looks more important, but the WCC is where the prize money is. Hungary GP was a pretty good point in illustrating that, the teams that aren't fighting for WDC are purely fighting for WCC, Alpine's Alonso defending against Hamilton, Williams' Russell told his team to prioritize his teammate who was ahead, all of that was because they are fighting for WCC.

Commercial pressure washers go upwards of 2500bar for large industrial application, like removing linings of process equipment.

I don't think it is going with the fluid to the supercooled state. There is huge disadvantage of this solution that fluid can solidify just by acceleration or shake that f1 car produce on track. I would go with chemical additives to point where fluid stays fluid. Maybe my knowledge is to small in this area. Another question is if liquid is cooled under pressure is it supercooled? For anyone interested, you can experience a super cooled liquid at home. Take bottled water and put it in the freezer for a few hours. Take it out before it starts freezing. Hit the bottle and the water will instantly crystallise in the bottle. I've found that sparklink water works bets as you can pour it into a glass ten drop an ice cube in to watch it turn into slush. The fact that Mercedes can cool the coolant enough to achieve this is a feat. Especially that close to a very hot engine.
@stefanmayer4443 жыл бұрын
Those Sodium Acetate hand wormers work by the same principle. The solution is supercooled too and needs a "seed" for crystallisation to occur. By bending the metal inside the wormer, small crystals are released and start the crystallisation.

The thing that always surprises me is that we constantly hear about designers going to absolute extremes to keep the centre of gravity low in order to maximise mechanical grip, which is particularly important in the low speed corners, because there's minimal downforce at low speed. And since the Red Bull seems to be quick in low speed corners, you would imagine it has a particularly low centre of gravity. But given that the high rake design lifts the whole engine, gearbox, fuel tank, rear suspension etc several inches higher than a low rake car, the Red Bull centre of gravity must be massively higher than the Mercedes in low speed corners. It just doesn't make any sense.

8:00 I'm not sure what type of coolant Mercedes is using, but I find it hard to believe they are using coolant that is being cooled to below it's freezing point. Water freezes at 0 C/32 F, so unless their car has some sort of refrigerator on board, there's no way they're supercooling coolant using just ambient airflow (and F1 races don't usually occur when it's below freezing outside). If I had to guess, "supercooled" in this context does not mean the coolant is being cooled below its freezing point, but rather it means that the coolant is being cooled below its boiling point. When referring to systems that use a combination of vapor and liquid (more believable in this context), supercooled means the vapor-liquid mixture is being cooled below the temperature that all of the vapor condenses into liquid. That being said, I am making the assumption that their coolant is primarily water. This makes sense as most cars use water-based coolant, and water has an extremely high specific heat capacity, so it transfers heat very effectively for it's weight. But if they're using some exotic chemical for their coolant, my argument is null.

@@dandewar8403 Yeah maybe. But FIA tech officers are not dumb or are they? If there is something on this i imagine this is almost carbon copy situation of Ferrari. Maybe they really use "cavity" inside carbon plenum to provide that advantage. Technically is possible yes. But huge red flag against that is how Mercedes out willingly spoken about revolutionary" plenum design before and even during this season. Normally Merc operates under smoke and mirrors tactics. Whole 2013 season was meme, 2014-2016 hiding aero dominance, 2017 diva car with Pirelli understandings - those pesky wheel rims and lobby for oil burning etc. I guess there advantage is on other place or there are none. Maybe they just perfected combustion of this hybrid are to perfection. Nowadays they just squeezing as much performance they can .So they got perf issues. naturally. And luckily for them in next seasons you can resolve any anomaly's even under freezing rules. So is worth it to push harder and fix thingies later. Overall design seems just solid for them. Same for Honda witch impressive resurgence and catch up gets them high praise and any magic bullets are very unlikely at this stage.

They are allowed one update on each component. Renault runs with last year's engine and they are going for a new split turbo engine next year.

The Merc has had a massive power boost since Silverstone. RB's got no chance on the straight anymore. Let's see if it punishes the merc's reliability. Great video though, it's exactly the things that makes one an F1 fan no matter if the races are boring or not. :D

I'm with you, I was trying to figure this out as well. In theory if you could bleed some compressed air off the inlet (after the intercooler) then expand that back to ambient pressure you might be able to get below ambient temp. Maybe run that air through a cooler to cool your working fluid? Not even sure it's possible once you account for efficiencies and relatively small heat capacity of the bleed air compared to the plenum air. I don't think they'd be using a refrigerant cycle (doubt the rules would even allow that) due to weight and the power loss to run the compressor.

I recall watching this and referring back to it as Red Bull exhibited real improvments. Then, there was Sao Paulo. Mercedes was in a different category from all other cars, or at least Hamilton was.

Its quite remarkable how Mercedes has closed the deficit to Redbull compared to the start of the season. No matter what obstacle FIA throws with new regulations they will find a way.

can't wait to the see the new cars, as all the drivers are great but the result seems to come down to who has the fastest car instead of driving skill. I do like the fact the cars are different but when one or two teams are so far ahead it's unfair. Hamilton is a great driver in the fastest car so doesn't normally have competition he gets way out in front, next year we will see if he can actually battle and drive well with other probably equally skilled drivers keeping the pressure on assuming he is even at the or near the front of the pack might not be the case next year, although I'm sure Mercedes will bend as many rules as possible to make sure they have the best car again.

Out thinking your opponents isn’t “unfair” if it’s within the rules regulations. Don’t blame the Mercedes’ engineers for being more clever than their rivals. Don’t complained about “Mercedes’ dominance”. Complain to your favorite constructors about why they’re unable to match technical skill and know how.

As I understand it, the split turbo also allows for simplified plumbing, which allows for tighter packaging. Why the others haven't gone this route already I don't understand.

Graham Hill couldn’t get the car to work . I haven’t watched the end yet but Louis is becoming a major factor in Mercedes winning Races.By 1968 the DFV was totally dominant.

@mickvonbornemann38243 жыл бұрын
With charger pressurerized fuel, electronic control of spark & electronic control of pneumatic valves you could design the engine to run as a 2 stroke at high revs while making sure it only runs 4 stroke during stationary testing. Mind you with a crank designed for a 4 stroke 720 degree firing order V6, while in 2 stroke mode one will be doing 2 concurrent 2 stroke 3 cylinder cycles. But that’s no big deal, that’s how Ricardo’s dual stroker works, (I assume). Having double the power strokes means more power regardless of the fact they’re concurrent.

This is why I've never bought the idea of RB somehow "having the better car" this season, or the notion of RB and Merc having "swapped places". Many of the people saying this tended to ignore such points made about Merc in past seasons on the string of their success, owing credit to the drivers when they probably didn't make up that difference on performance that people would want to think.

@@AdotLOM The Redbull having a better car thing comes from the regulation which removed downforce elements (Kept the different pressure Air from going under the car?! From great power comes great responsibilities. Mercedes can't afford to make even one mistake while maintainance because their system is much more complex than any other F1 cars and that makes it more prone to system failure on track a small hit could possibly disrupt the system but on the contrary redbull engines use less complex system and care more about aerodynamics. Don't know if my views are wrong or not.

the phase diagram you show as 8:24 is actually of water. the line solid-liquid separation line going with a negative slope is called the anomaly of water, since in most materials this line has a positive slope. so i'm not sure the phase diagram here tells the correct physics of supercooling
