It was easy for the abolitionist or the Republican to sympathize with stories about the Sioux plight being so far away from the issue. I think that Federal troops being outfitted with inferior weaponry being left alone out there reflected the national psyche of reluctance to deal with the frontier problem after the Civil War. Just interesting to me. Great video

I’ve heard the Lakota women would mutilate the legs so they couldn’t walk, or pursue them in the afterlife.

QUESTION: Who was supplying the Indigenous Warriors with firearms? British/Canadiens? Spanish? American Racketeers?

Some of it was rogue traders, like the Comancheros. The U.S. Indian Bureau also sold or just gave guns to the Indians. One of the inciting events of the Sand Creek Massacre was Maj. W.S. Wynkoop's rumored distribution of firearms to the Cheyenne. He escaped scrutiny because of the Massacre itself overshadowed this event. Whether or not he distributed guns to the Cheyenne in 1864, we know that he and other Indian agents distributed firearms to the southern plains tribes in 1867 during the peace commissions. Sitting Bull and his Hunkpapa, raided around and harassed Fort Burford on the upper Missouri, but would be on their best behavior when arriving at Fort Berthold to trade with the Indian agent. They obtained quite a few state of the art guns in this fashion. This isn't to say that every rifle given to the tribes was turned back on its former owner. Some tribes, like the Pawnee, Crow, and the tribes in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) did use firearms to hunt and defend themselves from other hostile tribes. To paint with a broad brush, the military distrusted all Indian tribes while the government (the Indian Bureau in particular) tended to take the Indians at their word, hostile or not.

Actually Red cloud had never fought during the very large us military charge forces of cannon fire engagements against the Lakota sioux indian warriors! Only bearcoat miles had a smaller us militory forces of over five hundred soldiers with his cannons Ready perfectly in the battlefield scene. During the late winter campaigns of 1876 - early 1877 against sittingbull and crazyhorse Allied warriors encampments along the northern yellow stone and the wolf mountain region. The first time very brave Lakota sioux warriors actually had fought against the us militory charging cannon fire wars! My great inspiring wisdom for today. Have a fabulous wonderful day.😀

The very brave hunkpati Dakota sioux indian warriors and the refugee minnesota Dakota Indians warriors of whitestone hill September 3rd to the early morning of the 4rth of 1863, Near Ellendale ND. The battle of a near massacre but it was worse then you emagine of a very deadly battlefield scene, The very brave fought very hard against a large us military forces at the fierce battlefield will keeping a close eye of a large group of us soldiers prisoners during the great fight! A fail us militory charge of over hundred calvery soldiers! The canyon revines made the perfect well fortified stronghold to continue fighting! General sullys ordered his very large army of 1,400 not to entire the very hostile Indian village! Very unfortunately over two hundred poor innocent Dakota sioux indian people would lose their lives by deadly cannon fire! The only way Genreal sully won this victory! It's differently not a great victory because the very brave Dakota sioux indian warriors fought a very impressive battlefield combat moment scene against the us militory soldiers! Sittingbull and crazyhorse Allied warriors didnt fare great against col. Bearcoat miles us calvery military forces cannon fire engagements wars of late fall of 1876 and early 1877. My great inspiring wisdom for today. Have a great fabulous wonderful day.@@worldchampion8888

Sherman's personal bias against Meagher (Irish racism) was blatantly obvious in all that.

I found that bit of research particularly amusing. Not sure about racism against the Irish (somehow poetic if it's true, considering how staunch an Irish nationalist Meagher was), but at the very least it shows how bureaucrats out East hadn't a clue of the realities of the frontier. Very similar to governor Crawford in Kansas during 'Hancock's War' when the army couldn't defend citizens against Indian raids. The volunteer militia in many ways proved more effective than the imported Army recruits from the East.

@@doorusthewalrus6903 Oh, that beef started at 1st Bull Run and thereabouts. Sherman thought the Irish drunken barbarians and took swipes at Meagher every chance he got. Which was a fairly mainstream prejudice, reflected in the rise of the "Know Nothings" as a political party.

I am aware of the anti-Irish sentiment in America as far back as the Whiskey Rebellion, but I didn't know that about Sherman. Doesn't surprise me. He's an utterly unlikeable figure.

@@doorusthewalrus6903 He was def ruthless. Immortal Irishman by Tim Eagan is an excellent read. Goes into some depth about the spat between Sherman and those guys. PS - Great episode, btw. I had the opportunity to visit all of those Bozeman trail battlefields some years ago. Lonely place to die.

Has major factual errors…Oregon traildid not traverse anywhere in CO. You owe it to the Indian tribes to pronounce their names correctly…..disappointing….

Thanks for watching. When did I state that the Oregon Trail crossed Colorado? Also, what did I mispronounce? I'd like to know.
