I recorded the whole scene because I personally thought the dramatic buildup of the music made this scene 10X better

Robert didn't give up in this scene. He sacrificed himself so that the others could get away. You can hear him saying at 1:36 "go on. go on." as he goes another direction so that the HIND follow him. That's why he was badass.

First of all you see in the scene where the trucks drop the food that they are starving. so exposing themselves to daylight was a risk they thought they needed to take. and robert sacrificies himself so the others can get away, and after his horse is killed, he knows that he cannot get away. After they killed his family, he lost his humanity. facing down a chopper with only a machine gun was not stupid, it was just the only option his character would accept. never surrender

Robert is simply a tragic character. He is motivated by revenge and rage, which is ultimately his downfall. He knows the only peace he will find is in death, with his boots on. WOLVERINES! Also, The Outsiders is also good. Stay gold, Ponyboy.

Of course it's ridiculous. At the same time, it seemed he had no other option. There were three Hinds in the area and chances of escaping a gun run like that were slim to none. He chose to continue to distract the Hinds as much as he could so the others could escape. So, in fact, he sacrificed himself so others may live (a sort of redemption for all the bad stuff he did in the movie).

@AwesomeSauce64 Russian Hinds, or whatever helicopter that was supposed to be (didn't look quite right to me), were actually very armored. In operation, they have actually taken all sorts of small arms fire as well as RPG's, shot back, and flown home safely. It took American Stinger missiles sent to Afghanistan to take them down. By the way, favorite clip of any movie ever.

Pawsprincess Those are not "Original" Russian Mi-24A Hinds but French made Aerospatiale 330 Puma Helicopters with Modifications. These choppers were also used in the movie Rambo First Blood Part-2 (In the final scene where Rambo rescues POW's in a Hijacked "Vietnamese" Huey Helicopter and is pursued by Col. Podovsky in his Puma) and in Rambo-3 where Rambo uses it to rescue Afghan POW's (Remember Col. Trautman says to Rambo "Can you fly that thing?" and Rambo replies "Lets find out".) and Colonel Zaysen uses it in Village attack, Spetsnaz deployment in caves and the final Showdown with Rambo near the Afghan-pakistan border.

I thought C. Thomas Howell was the man back then, I was a kid during this era. He was my fav character in this movie and this was my least favorite scene in the film. Also, if this was supposed to be him going out in a blaze of glory, then why did they change the music from triumphant to gloomy the moment he went down? The triumphant music score makes it seem like he's about to get the upper hand.

Weirdly enough, the one (there is only one Puma used) in Rambo looks less like Hinds then these ones. These have extra bits on the front to make them look more like the initial Hind variants, the Rambo one only bothered with adding the wings. Although, tbf these might also have been borrowed from the army (along with some modified S-55), which had a few choppers modified to aid in target recognition training.
@actisac8 жыл бұрын
Palora That is because of the Obstruction the "Fake Hind Nose" was giving to Puma Pilots and also it didn't allow pilots to properly maneuver the puma chopper. The Rambo 2 Puma had Door Mounted M60 machine gun while Rambo 3 Puma Had nose mounted M134 Gatling Gun and ddor Mounted FN MAG GPMG machine gun. In short the Puma in Rambo 3 was more Heavily Armed than the one in Rambo 2. The Gazelle light attack helicopter in Rambo 3 (Which flew with the Puma) was Mocked to replicate the Ka-50 Black shark Attack helicopter.

@narasil1991736 жыл бұрын
I got to ride in a Soviet HIND helicopter when I was in the Army at Ft. Polk LA. during a JRTC exercise. This was just a few years after the movie Red Dawn came out and we asked both the American and Russian Federation observers if an RPG could take down the helicopter. In both cases the answer was an emphatic "NO CHANCE"....which is why the Americans armed the Afghans with stingers which COULD bring them down....and booyah they won the war....which created other problems, but the reality of Robert not being able to kill a HIND with an RPG is totally on point.
@narasil1991739 жыл бұрын
Realistic if these were HIND Soviet era helicopters. I remember when I was a kid watching this thinking no WAY would a missile not bring down a helicopter...but the Afghani's learned the same hard lessons until the US gave them stinger missiles and won their war for them. That set the stage for 9/11, but that's a different story...
@anissueofursincerity9 жыл бұрын
+Clint James I don't think so. The stingers had something in them that expired. No terrorist ever got to use them. And the 9/11 folk grew out of the middle east, not Afghanistan. BinLaden and Zawahiri's only involvement there was to attempt to recruit people to go to middle east to oust the sitting government in Saudi and Egypt. But yer right about the stingers against the Soviet gun ships. I remember seeing the death of Robert, giving his all, then seeing the fleet of gun ships flying over our land I felt such outrage, that that would ever happen. This year we had Russian fighter jets buzzing us off the west coast on July 4. And there were Chiness ships off our Alaskan coast in the 12 mile limit. And now we have Russians themeselve--not just weapons sold---there.

@tommi35777 No my friend its not a Hind, its a Puma, from Aerospatiale, french made. Its just that it was retrofitted to look like a Hind, the early version. Just check out the main landing gear, the Puma has stub wheel wells in which each set protrudes out a bit, maybe 1/3 of the wheel. The Hind A doesnt have it, the whole gear goes into the fuselage and that part is rounded. Same used in Rambo Movies. Another example is from Blue Thunder, its an Aerospatiale Gazelle, modified

I never understood this scene where Robert dies. Its like he gave up, which wasn't in his personality during the movie. The writers did a bad job with that one. I'd much rather seen him overwhelmed in force if they were bent on him dying. But standing there spraying AK fire at an armored helo wasn't sensible and it looks ridiculous even now. Great movie though, I am just really disappointed in how they handled Robert dying.

They were hungry and aren't real soldiers...but that enough excuse for them. Yea! How in the hell are you going get the food and post up on a boulder not far from where you got the food. Like you said, during daylight. Maybe they thought the horses would blend in with the rocks as they ate and played around. Should have just busted out the football while they were at it. But I like this movie a lot more then the remix they did.
@AndreiPopescu12 жыл бұрын
The RPG isn't strong enough to penetrate the armor of the MI-24 "Hind". But here it exploded inside the cockpit and should have killed the pilot not just the gunners, if the pilot's seat is in the same compartment. I haven't seen the interior of the MI-24 A so I am not able to tell. The only MI-24 interior I have seen is that of my MI-24 E scale replica and there is a small opening between the pilot's seat and the passenger compartment. If the real one is like that than the pilot should be dead.
@williamgregory61298 жыл бұрын
Andrei Popescu I watched a documentary on the MI-24 and the pilot and gunner are in armored bathtub if you will that can sustain direct hits. If you watch the scene carefully notice the rpg hits just below the main rotor. If Robert had hit higher up he could've taken out the rotor and that would've brought the chopper down like a rock.

That would be a tough target to hit---the AK is not exactly a marksman's weapon. And as I understand it, those choppers' cockpits are armored enough to be able to shrug off small arms. What I never understood is how that chopper shrugged off a RPG---those things are designed to take out armored vehicles. Unless the one that got Robert wasn't the one he shot with his RPG. They all look alike, after all.
