If there’s one thing Better Call Saul did, it made it more evident just how much of an absolutely chaotic force Walt really was. All of these characters survived cartels, psychopaths, criminal masterminds and in the end all of their lives get uprooted and destroyed by a chemistry teacher with an ego problem.
@mikyto7313 Жыл бұрын
Walt was a genius whose ego ruined his life and chance at success. Grey Matter and the drug trade both were never enough for him because he wanted to be the #1 man. He was an egoistical maniac, yes, but he was extremely smart. Yes, he lucked out with some things but often it was his genius that got him to where he wanted.

If that show teaches us anything it’s that these characters were always bad. Walt just became apart of that world, but it’s not like Gus and Mike were any different. Mike killed people as much as Walt did and was working in the same business. Gus killed people too and his revenge was his motivation. Sure Walt did things and bad things at but I wouldn’t consider anybody in this show to be a saint sure they had limits but they all had blood on their hands.

Even though at this point Walter is past the point of no return, I don't think Mike is right. Gus's plan all along was to get Walter to work with Gale until Gale can copy everything and then get rid of Walter. I think Walter acted rationally for half the series. It's hard to tell exactly where was that point of no return ( probably letting Jane die, although even that is questionable since there's a good chance Jane and Jesse would soon completely lose their lives while abusing H but idk ). Say what you will about Walter, he became a monster at this point but Mike is not right about "them" having a good thing going, Mike had a good thing going, not Walter.

Gus only wanted to kill Walt after he killed the 2 guys, but even after that, Walter started being paranoid and reckless throughout all of season 4 which is why Gus fired him. Walter did have a good thing after Gale died and no one was there to replace him.

@@Infamous_Val_05 Not exactly true. The entire season was used to show that Gus was planning for Jesse to replace Walter. Walter knew this, which is why he was paranoid. The only thing keeping him alive was Jesses loyalty to Walt and vice versa
@ilirianzuta6852Ай бұрын
@ugandaplayer That doesnt have to be the case because Gus eventually offered Walt an annual salary to work for him. This was before the 2 drug dealers were killed. So he did have a good thing going for a while. Unfortunately Jesse kind of ruined the peace with his actions and Walt had to save him and risk compromising everything and ruining everything. Thats when things went to hell for him. Sure, Walt could have just contacted Gus instead of doing what he did maybe, but his loyalty to jesse changed everything. It worked out for him in the end though
@andrewashmore800010 күн бұрын
Yeah I agree with you, Jane dying was the turning point , while logically it may have made sense to try to save Jesse longterm ultimately though it broke Jesse cos he loved her so much, and it broke her father, out of pure luck he had a golden opportunity to save her, but took the wrong road. Guess it shows in life , faith is waiting for people to make wrong decisions at every turn ,Walt made a massive mistake.
@leximatic2 күн бұрын
@andrewashmore8000 I guess Walther had a strong feeling of being &¥¢%ed in his life, after this "Grey Matter" desaster and ending up as a teacher. I think after a while being successful as a criminal, he got the impression that he could revenge on everyone and everything. Grey Matter had cast a shadow on him, a coalblack dark spot in his heart, that grew bigger over time. He defeated lung cancer for a while, but didn't defeat the cancer of his soul for a minute. It's crazy how miserable and out of place Walter seems now that we've got an entire world without him in Better Call Saul. To know that he solo destroys everything these powerful, patient, methodical gangsters built in the shadow of the system, just by being a man cursing at Fate for making him an invisible anecdote no one would ever remember. Only that type of anomaly could bring such a collapsing chain of events, as they were all prepared for so much more of a threat (government forces, politics, cartels and their armies, even progress) but never the blinding ego of the weak.

After watching all of Better Call Saul, Mike's anger toward Walt means so much more than it originally could have. All the blood, sweat, and tears that went into Gus Fring's operation was destroyed by one greedy man. What probably irritates Mike the most is that he could have killed Walt so many times before the dominoes fell. The man who gave the "no more half measures" speech was ultimately killed for choosing a half measure with Walt.
@JSmellerM2 жыл бұрын
People bring up the "no more half measures"-speech but it was never Mike's place to decide taking full measures against Walt. Mike worked for Gus and followed orders. One of his orders must have been that he mustn't kill Walt. After Walt killed Gus Mike could've killed Walt but instead he decided to keep providing for his family. So it was still full measure just not the way ppl think of it. In the end he died because Walt was a wildcard that couldn't be predicted. Even before his death Mike took the full measure by leaving his family behind to not put them in danger. All the half measures debates do not take into account that Mike did everything for his family. He was always full measures for his family.

What I love about this scene is that the writers had one shot to do a moment where somebody tells Walt off. A scene where somebody confronts him, calls out his BS, and tells him straight to his face that he's a self-serving, narcissistic megalomaniac and that all his pretenses of "it's all for my family" are just an excuse for him to satiate his ego. And they chose the perfect character to do so with Mike. People often say Gus was everything Walt wanted, but failed, to be. And that's true. But I think it's also true of Mike. Part of Walts narcissism is that he genuinely wanted to believe he was a good, decent husband and father and was hard done by the world. And, as BCS shows, that (with a few ambiguities) is Mike. Even if you think Mike is a monster for going into this work, you at least have to acknowledge that he's genuinely motivated to do it for his family, be that an adequate justification or not. He makes millions with Gus and doesn't spend a penny of it on himself. His biggest luxury in life is a pimento cheese sandwich. After Gus's death, he's the person most eager to just sell their methylamine and close down business - he takes no joy, or sense of self-aggrandisement, from this work. To him, it really is a sacrifice for the sake of others close to him. And that means it's so perfect and satisfying for him to call Walt out here. Mike knows what it is actually to be that guy. He sees right through Walt. From his point of view, Walt is just a pitiful and transparent man-child. Hell, to Mike it must be downright insulting that Walt would even pretend they're in the same boat. Such a well executed moment in the show.
