There's a tiny little detail that always got to me: if you listen closely at 0:59 right after the moment Arthur caught the illness, you can hear the sound of bass strings being rubbed. It is the same noise as coughing. Veeery subtle detail, but I highly doubt that it was put there randomly.

Roger Clark did an excellent job with his motion capture and performance as Arthur Morgan. To this day, I can't figure how he did so well with all the coughing and wheezing without genuinely hurting himself. Wrecking his voice and such. I feel like I went through every bit of Arthur's pain when I played through the experience that is Red Dead Redemption II.

Poor Arthur really deteriorated after guarma. It's the exact opposite of the environment the doctor told him to stay in, not only was he washed ashore, probably beaten up by the wave action, he also had to run around EVERYWHERE in order to help the rebels

Thomas Downes was a very unfortunate but also selfless person who was always looking after others even after knowing he was going to die, he was the one who begged Arthur to stop beating on Tommy back in that Valentine bar fight mission. Also in Valentine you can spot him early in the story running a charity fund for sick children I think, he already showed symptoms of TB back then. I think the choice of making the good samaritan look like Thomas Downes was on purpose, to shows to us that if he was still alive, he would still try to look after you.

@@bbrandumbb true but you as a player can choose not to beat Downes and just threaten him or whatever. Strauss literally instructs Arthur to beat him, fully knowing he was sick and dying and that could potentially pose a risk to Arthur’s health. I won’t say it wasn’t Arthur’s fault or his own carelessness that caused it, after all he was the one who was willing to work for Strauss in the first place (another intimidating member of the gang could have done it instead like Bill or someone) but I’m pretty sure Strauss is smart enough to put 2 and 2 together once Arthur starts coughing and still has the audacity to ask Arthur to collect more debts. The thing is, when you play through Strauss's quests, Strauss causes Arthur's death by getting him sick and Arthur actually causes Strauss's death by kicking him out of camp and letting the Pinkertons kill him. So, in the end, they both get eachother killed.

I feel as though I’m not the only one that did this, but once I saw Arthur had TB, and it was clear that he’s not surviving. I stopped caring about trying to get some cash. Stopped worrying about if I had enough money to get something, because I saw that having something wasn’t going to be much use. I just spent time helping rains fall, and trying to just bring as much good. It’s why I love this game, this game brought out a feeling of dread knowing the end is near, and in a game that promotes stealing, killing, and hurting people. You didn’t want to do any of it. You wanted to be good, because all the bad you ever did was simply either for want or pleasure. But seeing that want and pleasure had no use beyond life, you begin to care about things outside your well being. This is why this game is a masterpiece.

Actually the tuberculosis started in chapter 3. On one of the hidden dialogues at camp you can hear Arthur cough like he usually would when he had tuberculosis it was minor but he coughed. It started in chapter 3 and the water and getting washed up in chapter 4 just made it worse.

When I was replaying missions the other day, I noticed he coughed slightly and seemed to clear his throat in, what I believe is, the very first mission in Chapter 3. The one where Arthur, Dutch and Hosea go fishing. It starts in Chapter 3, progresses in Chapter 4 but still only to the point of him coughing every now and then. I think the worst cough he does is during the mission to kill Bronte. Arthur coughs whilst pulling the boat in. After chapter 5 and Guarma though? Arthur is dying.

I’ve always had Asthma growing up. Sometimes I have these cough attacks where I feel that my lungs are on absolute fire, so Albuterol is my heaven on earth. Can you imagine a game done in the same quality of RDR2 that allowed you to experience the black death, and TB in their respective time periods before antibiotics from the perspective of one who survives and one who dies from the respective diseases? There are many horror games out there, but the most sobering, and best ones would be ones that cover real things like those. The black death or plague would make a great one especially. TB too as it's a slow killer. Spanish flu too.
