Jack is the last known survivor of the gang. To me, he’s the true victim of this story. He was born into a life he didn’t ask for, and he had to end the problems Dutch started. And then what is he left with after he kills Ross and looks at his revolver? Nothing. He’s left with nothing. Jack’s life is a true tragedy.

Jack truly is the smartest of the gang and learned from John’s mistakes. He was the last of them and all his life has seen the chaos the cowboy life brings. He lost nearly everything to it just by being a relative, and he wasn’t going to make the same mistakes his predecessors did. Jack was patient as hell. He didn’t make a move until his mother was dead, he was a decently stable adult, and even waited for Ross to be a retired vet with no pull in government. He also left very little tracks, told nobody his name aside from Ross, and made little noise. Jack didn’t even let his temper move until it was about time to pull the trigger. Jack went in, did business, and walked out. He played the game of vengeance as smart as possible, with patience and strategy. I just hope it doesn’t bite him in the ass later, afterall “Vengeance is an idiot’s game.”
@petermj109810 ай бұрын
I think John reflects Dutch’s legacy while Jack represents Dutch’s succession. Dutch was a highly educated criminal consumed by darkness, now Jack is a new highly educated criminal consumed by darkness. Ross killed Dutch’s legacy by killing John, but he didn’t kill Dutch’s succession which was Jack.

@@user-vm7cj1qc6m a fair point. Arthur and John knew how to read and write, but smarts didn't interest them, they were more interested in gunslinging and robbing to survive. Jack was just a kid, had been through Hell as a kid growing up, and clearly didn't want to live that outlaw life after seeing what it did to everyone around them. Probably why he never become one himself and never joined a gang
@Linkfan4502 жыл бұрын
You know Jack went about this in a really smart way. He didn't tell anyone his name, nor did he give them a fake alias. Only when he finally reached Ross did he say who he was. This is what likely lead to him actually managing to have revenge and get away with it. That's the mistake John made - he killed way too many on his path to Micah and left the perfect crumb trail essentially. Jack was a lot smarter than he let on which is impressive for the era.

I hear you but what John and Arthur was doing is different from what Jack just did. Jack is for the most part an innocent man who’s a rancher. Him killing Edgar Ross was bringing everything full circle. It’s not like he killed him for money. Jack did what had to be done. In cannon their isn’t any indication that he went to live a life of crime because John fought hard to make sure they had a legit way of living. Ross lied to John and killed him in cold blood even after pretty much being promised amnesty. If Jack doesn’t eventually become the one to kill Ross then their is no full redemption for John, Arthur and Dutch. If like Dutch said “their time is up” is true then that goes for filth like Edgar Ross as well. This was the only way for the cycle to stop. Ross was still working. His wife said “I’d wish they’d leave him alone” implying he’s still working from time to time. Jack did what he was born to do. Even if it was just one moment. That was HIS moment.

I love that Edgar Ross looks so run-down and haggard by the time Jack finds him. It's great because it really tells us two things: 1. Ross has gotten old but more importantly, he's lost his station in life. He no longer holds the authority and purpose that he once did and the society that he has ironically fought so diligently to protect and uphold his whole life has cast him off like a useless burden (which actually vindicates Dutch's beliefs that "society" is ultimately detrimental to the individual). 2. There's no honor or glory in what Jack is doing. This isn't something to be proud of - he's a young man hunting down a miserable old fart who is far past his prime and probably longing for death anyway (which vindicates Dutch's beliefs that revenge is a waste of time). ...Either way, Dutch was right.

This quest solidified RDR as a masterpiece for me. I grew up watching westerns with my father and this whole game resonated with me because of it. I remember feeling so pumped to kill Ross and I audibly cheered when I won the duel. And that classic guitar when the title pops up. Chills every time. Outlaws to the end.
@wickedishiccy7621 Жыл бұрын
Not even a one liner after ending him. I remember feeling just as empty as jack looked and probably felt as he looked at his father's gun with the same blank expression before walking away. That last hard rough guitar twang was like an explanation point on the whole story of red dead.

Playing red dead 2, it only makes this ending feel so much more. . .empty, Arthur and John watching Dutch's gang slowly fall apart, John being used to find and kill the survivors, only to be killed by the same people who used him, and Jack being left to avenge everyone he called family, knowing full well that it'd bring him no satisfaction or relief. All he did was condemn himself to a life his father never wanted for him.
@KGWyzel2 жыл бұрын
Jack actually did this very intelligently. A few things to take note of: - Not once did Jack mention his name. - No one personally witnessed him kill Edgar. - He killed Edgar far from civilization, thus it will take time for anyone to find the body, if they even do. He will most likely get away with this revenge killing, as there will be very few leads to specifically tie him to the murder, and that is even assuming the authorities suspect murder, given that Edgar's body could easily float down stream or be picked off by critters, Jack would likely be long gone by the time anything of note comes up.

I would rather it be about young Arthur, Dutch, Hosea and teenager John in the 1880s. It would be much more interesting than Jack in the 1920s. Because that would pretty much be a GTA game in the 20s. I like to think after this Jack went to fight in WW1 and became an author. I would love RDR3 maybe in five years time or so for the next Xbox generation and the PS6, as a total wild west cowboy game with age 20s Arthur Morgan. The problem is, it wouldn’t be a redemption game because they would all be young outlaws. You could call it “Red Dead Revolution” or something. I would really enjoy that as a final Red Dead game and have it be a trilogy. RDR3- Rise of the Van der Linde gang RDR2- Fall of the Van der Linde gang RDR1- End of the Van der Linde gang

Rockstar had plenty of options. It’s so bad that I literally refuse to play the game as him, and that sucks because it’s a product I paid good money for, and it would have been cool to finish my challenges, get more trophies, etc. Btw, newsflash: tons of gamers are animal lovers. We don’t want to hear our protagonist constantly yell meanly to our sweet horse as we ride around everywhere on them. RDR2 got it right. They don’t have either protagonist yell mean commands to their horse, and they are literal _MURDERERS!_ They do nothing but love on their horses (well not in _THAT_ way, but you know what I mean lol), as they are innocent animals. No matter how cruel the world can be, it’s disgusting to take one’s frustration/anger out on innocent animals.
