Thats what i always thought too. This is the one line John says in the entire first game where a fan could say John had a flashback of Arthur. The real reason Arthur was never mentioned in RDR1 was because he was never a glint in Rockstars eyes. The fan reason was because it was too painful for John to talk about. And if I remember correctly, RDR II had john say as much somewhere in the game. Or was it someone else who said it in Johns behalf. I seem to remember the 2nd game leaning towards that. Either way, this scene here at 3:03 is where I like to think Arthur made an unseen appearance in the first game inside Johns mind. He was talking too much about his past that eventually he had a flashback of Arthur and stopped himself.

As a man who loves both games, I feel each games’ musical score compliments each game perfectly RDR’s music really does feel like the dying days of the old west, while RDR2’s music takes it back further with more era themed musical compositions I too prefer RDR’s music during free roam, but RDR2’s music and themes are just as great as the first

What if his daughter was born in secret between John and an unknown woman behind Abigail's back? During this time he would still be in the Van Der Linde gang so what if during a confrontation between a rival outlaw gang his daughter was shot and died soon after? I think he would have asked Dutch to keep the truth about his daughter away from Abigail and had her buried in an unmarked grave to keep the memory from haunting him. It would have been nice to hear her mentioned in RDR 2 at certain points like on horse rides between Arthur and John or between John and Dutch. It would have been nice to have a little cut scene about the middle of RDR 2 where we see John riding up a little hill and stand in front of a simple, wooden cross with only the words Rest In Peace craved along it.

Though, lemme just say this - just because he doesn't mention Arthur's name, doesn't mean he doesn't talk about it... John (To Javier): What you and Dutch did was wrong. The way you left me was wrong. Now, in retrospect, he's talking about the train robbery, but also what happened back at camp, when he sided with Dutch. John (To Reyes): In the end, [Dutch] went insane! Lost faith in everything... and everyone... He never cared for me or anybody else, not any of his so-called brothers. He left me to die when he had the chance to save me. But the one that gets me is meeting the Stranger. There's a part where John asks if he knows him and the Stranger says "You've forgotten far more important people than me." Gets me everytime...

Has much as people want to believe Arthur is mentioned in this game or the other characters in RDR 2, they weren't created yet. The best evidence we have of Arthur and the other characters being in RDR 1 are: "Why would you remember me, friend? You've forgotten far more *important people* than me." -The Strange Man / Death Abigail to Bonnie "Oh, people can change Ms. MacFarlane, John, and I have to believe that more than anybody." This is John and Abigail believing that people can change, this is more in a positive way than a negative way I would assume. To be more detailed, John knew Arthur very clearly and a lot, as they were around each other a lot, Arthur was basically his big brother that he looked up to a lot, Abigail knew him and was close to him as well since she asked Arthur to take Jack fishing. We can assume that they both know Arthur was cold-hearted and wasn't much of a good guy I would assume, judging by John saying that he wouldn't expect Arthur to be the kind of guy to sacrifice his life for him. They believe people can change because Arthur did and other people they were close to.
