Abigail ended up dying of cholera 3 years after John was killed. We even see signs of the cholera during the game because she's coughing constantly. There's a good chance if John hadn't been killed, he would have sadly witnessed Abigail dying tragically, making him a widower. I know how much he loved Abigail, depending on how much he did he probably would not want to remarry. If not though, I can see him getting together with Bonnie, especially since, as he says in the video, she's a lot like Abigail.
