Red Dead Stranger Stories: Strange Man (All Cutscenes)

The Strange Man is a minor character and Stranger featured in Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2.
An enigmatic and otherworldly character, the Strange Man appears to know John Marston very well, including details about his past life in the Van der Linde gang that not even John himself remembers. The Strange Man dresses in a black three-piece suit with a black tie and black top hat.
The Strange Man is the focus of the stranger side-mission I Know You, which is only available for John Marston. John meets the Strange Man in three separate places during the mission, once in each territory of the game. Each time, the man gives vague answers to John's questions, and twice, asks John to perform errands for strangers. The first is to visit a man about to cheat on his wife, the second is to visit a nun trying to raise money for charity. The player can either do the right thing by stopping the man and donating to the nun, or do the wrong thing by encouraging the man and robbing the nun. The Strange Man appears one final time overlooking Beecher's Hope, and his standoffish, creepy behavior enrages John enough to open fire on him. The Strange Man is completely unaffected and mysteriously vanishes right before John's eyes.

Not to nitpick but they still retconned the year. John originally got abandoned/quit the gang in 1906 and The Strange Man says it happened a "few years back", however with RDR2 it's now 12 years before RDR1. Definitely not a few years back.

He's definitely a figure of "death" or passing. In rdr2, there's a shack in the swamp with a shrine. The shrine has a painting of him in it. If you rotate the camera, he will occasionally appear in the mirror behind the door of the shack, but disappear once you take the camera off him. Now, specially in Louisiana voodoo lore, the loa (voodoo spirit) of death, Baron samedi, appears as a man in a fine suit and a top hat. Now im not saying the Stange man is the Baron, but he definitely has a likeness to him.

If you watch the Swedish movie The Seventh Seal, it is a very similar situation to this one except in that movie he tells him outright that he is Death. A knight in the Middle Ages who comes from the crusades back to his home meets death about 5 times throughout his journey because his time is coming up, Death is presented as a well spoken man who appears out of nowhere, with dialogue very similar to this, he even tells him “I’ve always been by your side” I am almost certain Rockstar took inspiration from that film

I think the man might actually be Death. Death always appears to those who are about to die and look at the locations John finds the man at: - New Austin, where John was almost killed by Bill at the beginning of the game - Mexico, where the Mexican Army betrayed and nearly killed John - West Elizabeth, where John ultimately meets his end He was basically there to let us know that John was running out of time.

I still think he could be God. You're right about the Devil as if he exists he manipulates people into doing bad or evil things, but (for the sake of what I'm going to say, let's assume God definitely exists whether anyone reading this comment personally believes in him or not) I'm pretty sure God wouldn't force someone to do good. He'd want them to do good of their own free will, as part of following God in a religion is doing good even if the bad seems tempting at the time. Even if one were to ignore that reasoning, when John exclaims "Damn you!" to the Strange Man, he responds "Many have." That sounds more in reference to God than death. But in my opinion I honestly think both are likely and can't decide which one I believe the Strange Man is. But I thought the God thing was worth sharing.

I don't think anyone realises the irony of this man, who is theorized to be Death himself, saying "I wish I knew more about life." And considering the possibility of his identity, it just seems a bit convenient. I also find the quote, "I hope my son turns out just like you." And considering his son was created as a manifestation of Death's fear, it makes sense as to why he'd want him to turn out more blunt and brave, similar to John.

It just struck me that Strange Man is sort of equivalent to G-Man from the Half-Life franchise. An enigmatic, mysterious figure who speaks in riddles, shows up unexpectably and seems to know much more than what he appears to be. Both G-Man and Strange Man are difficult to identify as antagonists; they are sort of there, observing the protagonist and intervening whenever they deem necessary. I wonder if Rockstar drew that inspiration from Valve. It was a bold move to implement such a character in an otherwise down-to-earth game.

I honestly love it. I am not spiritual but I feel that if there is a God, these types of interactions happen irl to people that are "on the fence" of morality just prior to their death. Some seemingly ambivalent stranger who seems to know a little too much crosses paths with us. Gives us a chance to make one final tilt to one side or the other. I feel like this guy is an aspect of the afterlife in some way. Whether he's god, or the devil, well I really don't know. And I'm glad it's kept that way.

i disagree. the strange man gives plenty of material to theorize who he could be, and most of his words open up even more interpretation. ('we gotta stop meeting like this' Dutch says this to John before he dies, 'You've forgotten far more important people than me' considering that Arthur was a concept during RDR1s development, while not finished, it's most likely alluding to him, how he never utters a word of the man who saved his life and give him a second chance which he pissed away for revenge.) Strange Man saying "we gotta stop meeting like this" is rather generic and is uttered by many characters in games and movies; "You've forgotten far more important people than me" yeah, I'd rather stick to the conversation Marston and Strange Man had at that moment, he clearly indicated what he meant there. Rockstar did not cover Arthur's backstory in RDR 1 becuase there was none. Otherwise he would be mentioned by Marston, Escuella, Dutch, Williamson, Jack, Abigail or Uncle at least once since Arthur was one of the most important members of the Dutch gang. Arthur was created after RDR 1. Unlike you I did not assume anything. I just made simple a observation on similarities between video game characters across different games. If you disagree I will happily find out what exactly is wrong with my assesment.

You know, alot of people say he’s death, but I’d say he’s God. I mean every time he shows up, he judges him on his actions and the lines even change depending on if you’re good or bad. He then offers a way for you to prove if you are good or bad. A big tell imo is the “Damn you! Oh, many have” part. The Bible says god is omniscient which would explain why he talks of Johns past present and future so much, and often talks about judging him or him being judged as that is supposedly his job when you die.

That last scene, besides him not getting hit by any of the bullets, he also say that this is a fine spot, and at that spot he get buried so, yeah, either he is like the devil, or more likely death. I only wish that they somehow revealed his true nature in some way in red dead 2, but i am happy non the less that they included him, and that tells me that he is an important character even tho he does not have a large part to play in the story overall. Just like in the second game, how your actions have an big impact on many things, like if you are good, you see this buck in a somewhat beautiful setting, if you are evil, you see this coyote in a much darker setting. So here, this mysterious man is just also hinting on that, you can choose to be good, or evil and your actions will be judged accordingly.

Every bullet represent as faith of thier deaths, first three is for John, Abegail and Uncle and the last is for Jack. The last shot was crippled due to the fact that John is not responsible for Jack's death. 3:47 proved that he is responsible of thier deaths due to the fact of stranger man's reply.
