This is a great set if you can get it on sale. That dragon sculpt is pretty great. The map is cool and so are the pieces of terrain, the treasure pile is a really cool piece that can be used over and over.

I received mine this weekend and was thoroughly surprised at the weight. And then pleasantly surprised at the tiles, that made it worth in my book and look forward to using this with the adult red dragon soon.

Am I correct that price wise this is similar to getting both the Red Dragon lair and Kobold queen epic encounters? If so the choice comes down to if you want pre painted and solid tiles or unpainted, paper map with story booklets

The Red Dragon Lair and it's companion box are a better value, even if they are unpainted, they come with an "adventure" (well, a reason for why the encounter happens and escalates from the first box to the dragon box, and advice on how to fit it into your campaign or just use it as a one shot encounters), more minis (albeit unpainted), and the price is roughly the same, a little cheaper honestly. The paint jobs and the map tiles here are the big part of this box to me and what has the most value. A unique sculpt and some cool tiles you can use anytime you're in a lava filled underground, not just for this encounter. Not as versatile as could have been if it were two sided, or out in the open plains or city, but it works.

I liked the dragon sculpt and the tiles were really cool. I always enjoy this channel, it is by far my favorite for product reviews. I appreciate that you are not interested in creating drama and give fair objective reviews no matter who makes the product. I feel like you and Bob World Builder should collab, you guys have a nice calm relaxed style that is enjoyable.

As one of those everybodies, thanks for getting this out! I laughed in the unboxing video after scrolling down and seeing everyone else getting ads targeted at them for this as well. I do think I'll be picking this one up when I settle down from the rash of kickstarters I just did. The dragon looks great, and those maps are awesome. My campaign these days is built on what map I find in my stash that I haven't used yet.

I love that red dragon sculpt and the pile of eggs. I don't have the kobold warband yet so the Kobolds are good with me (although if I find a deal I'm likely to get it anyway, since I'm a dirty repainter lol) Thank you for pushing this out so fast! You guys rock!

Looks very cool! Love the maps! Quick question about them: they look glossy so, can you write on them with dry/wet erase pens? Haven't been able to find that out... I don't have the 2 related Epic boxes, haven't needed kobolds or a dragon but, i do like most of the adventures from that line. I'm leaning a bit more towards this box for the maps and the scenery, i don't have the kobold warbands so a plus for me. I think i'll check out about dry brushing the scenrery, as the one for the Elder Brain set look better! Thanks for the fast responds to ou demands Theo 😀!

Are the Kobolds' clothes a different color than the warband?

Reused rocks are okay but new kobalds could have pushed the set better. Now I'm down to how bad do I want the dragon and the tiles since I already have the warband.

To be fair, with enemies like kobolds and goblins, you can certainly bring a bunch of them to the table at once. You'll get use out of them.

If you can't think of an adventure for this box, I suggest you use the Icepyre peak box and change the dragon from white to red and the cold icy fight for a volcanic one where the red dragon new domain is awaking a long dormant volcano that threatens Phandalin with more and more comon earthquakes... and so on... modify it at your convenience!

This is awesome, but has two major flaws and 2 minor flaws. 1st major flaw is the map. Good god thats a big map. You know that a DM wants to decorate it further and there simply way too little terrain included here to make me do that. Especially those pillars, stalagmites and stalagtites - double the amount of those and paint them up properly and we have a deal. Also, thats an ungodly pathetic amount of gold for a dragon hoard. Give me a few busts, piles of gems, chests brimming with coins and maybe even a few piles of weapkns and swords and bones. Give me rubble and difficult terrain. Maybe even small micro-volcanos! Next up with the big issues, there is no booklet in there. You know, some adventures write themselves, I think its okay for there to not be a book. But cheaper and better made rival products include them and it really wouldn't hurt to write a micro adventure about a red dragon near some city or town on the official map - stuff like "kill a dragon that has nested in a volcano in Chult" or some stuff like that. Basicly a bit of storytelling to go with the set to give it a bit more life. Basicly, make me feel something when seeing those Kobolds. Give them names, give the dragon a name and give the cave a name and then say where its located and who the dragon and his kobolds threat and why. Now to the minor issues. Repurposing some Kobolds and those stone terrain pieces is fine. It does feel lazy though and a bit like a money grab. That Goblin Camp at least included one or maybe even 2 new molds. Why not give us the whole warband and maybe a Kobold Spellscale or some fire priest. Basicly, give us enough miniatures to populate this absurdly big map. Thlse are monsters that die quickly, especially to heroes fit to deal with a young dragon. So why not make it genuinely hard and include more of the higher CR kobolds or at least more kobolds in general. And why no dragon breath effect? I understand why they didn't throw in a flying mold for the dragon, even though there kinda have to be two dragons for there to be eggs, but a fire breath to put in that dragons mouth wouldn't hurt. The bigger issue though, is that bad paint job. Wizkids isn't bad at doing those anymore, they genuinely improved a lot. But those kobolds and those pillars, dont look great. For that price tag, I expect better. Anyhow, I like that set, its not the best of the best but definitly not bad at all. That Lava map can also be used for fire giants, salamanders, an angry efreet with lave/fire elementals, an army of Imix-worshipping fire-newts and even the cult of elemental fire. I'd say that if you are planning to do some flaming cave diving, this is a really good map and with those minis and terrain included, the price tag becomes a bit mlre stomachable. I'd say, on a discount, this set is totally worth it. If you just want an epic dragon encounter though, the epic encounters line is WAAAAAAAY better.

This or Epic Encounters... it's not even a contest, Epic Encounters wins by a mile; even if I buy Epic Encounters Kobold Queen & Red Dragon's Lair together, it's still cheaper than this lackluster outing that doesn't even have an adventure in it. Disappointing.
