In the end, he actually does care for her. She is the only one he lets live. And instead of killing her (even though she could have identified him). He decideds to let her go, and tries to fake his own death. Not because he feared getting caught (might have been a small part). But so that she would let him go because he realized how bad he actually was. And that he never wanted to harm her or for her to grieve for him, but it would happen if they were together long enough. A true shakespearean romance in my opinion.
@vanageslangas Жыл бұрын
ofcourse he cares - she is the only true love.. however she later was so blind she married a man she did not love and in the end - I think.. they finally got together he had a motivation to look farward after he faked his own death. Good story..

I love the moment when Francis has her hand near his mouth and he looks like he wants to bite off her fingers cause he hates being touched so much, but in his moment of vulnerability, he restrains himself and walks away like a scared child. He knows that she can see through his facade and that scares him to death!

Reba is one of the bravest characters in the Lecter Series next to Clarice, Crawford and Graham. In the most mundane of her actions, she lets the elephant out of the room, by talking about D's facial condition, but at the same time tries to assure him that there's nothing wrong with him. Only acting nervous out of fear of offending him. She helps him break out of his shell so to speak and in turn he's able to somewhat suppress his murderous urges and slowly become a human being again. Then when he confronts her in an effort to make sure he died at her hands and not The Dragon's, she is scared out of her wits. She knows there's something wrong with him and rather than run, she tries to save him. His alleged death being the only thing that broke her. As much as I hated Dolarhyde part of me hoped he would drop all this shit and marry that girl.

I haven't seen the full movie in a while. It took me some time to remember that Francis was probably self-conscious about his cleft lip. It went away for a bit, after he realized Reba was blind. It came back in force, when Reba could sense the cleft, in his speech.
@Paraprax2 жыл бұрын
In the book Francis is okay to talk to her until she mentions having taught speech therapy at a school for the blind, at which he clams up again for a while until she brings it up directly like here. I find a lot of the adaptations of Thomas Harris' work gloss over small but crucial details like that, even when the scenes are still great like this one.

So sad . Francis is jealous of normal famines yet w/ Reba he actually could have had that. They both care deeply for each other but after all his killings if he did marry her & have kids it would not work w/ the knowledge of what he had done. Such a tragic couple. When I saw manhunbter I rooted for them. She, who is blind could see his heart he w/ his mental illness from abuse didn't give a damn about her blindness. The saddest part is when he is talking to the voice in his head & he says " no I can't hurt her she's nice " was so sad

Ralph Fiennes is a very versatile actor. Francis Dolarhyde is very different from Lord Voldemort, Lord Voldemort is very different from Ramesses, and Ramesses is very different from Monsieur Gustave. Ralph gives off an Anthony Perkins like shyness in this movie whilst also showing hints of the monster hiding underneath even when he's not in full psycho mode. I wonder if he's a fan of Psycho and was inspired by Anthony's performance as Norman Bates.
@Threeleebird3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about that, but I know that Ralph told in an interview that he read some memoirs of real serial killers. And I think it would be fair to think that Thomas Harris, the author of Red Dragon, had Psycho on his mind when he created Francis Dolarhyde.
