Red Dwarf - Deleted Scenes (Series 1)

Red Dwarf is a British science fiction comedy franchise created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor which primarily consists of a television sitcom that aired on BBC Two between 1988 and 1999, and on Dave since 2009, gaining a cult following.[1] The premise of the series follows the low-ranking technician Dave Lister, who awakens after being in suspended animation for three million years to find he is the last living human, with no crew on board the mining spacecraft Red Dwarf other than Arnold Rimmer, a hologram of Lister's deceased bunkmate, and Cat, a life form which evolved from Lister's pregnant cat.
As of 2020, the cast includes Chris Barrie as Rimmer, Craig Charles as Lister, Danny John-Jules as Cat, Robert Llewellyn as the sanitation droid Kryten, and Norman Lovett as the ship's computer, Holly.
To date, twelve series of the show have aired, in addition to The Promised Land. Four novels were published from 1989 to 1996. Two pilot episodes of an American version of the show were produced but never aired. The magazine The Red Dwarf Smegazine was published from 1992 to 1994.
One of the series' highest accolades came in 1994 when an episode from the sixth series, "Gunmen of the Apocalypse", won an International Emmy Award in the Popular Arts category. In the same year the series was also awarded "Best BBC Comedy Series" at the British Comedy Awards.[2] The series attracted its highest ratings, of more than eight million viewers, during the eighth series in 1999.[3]
The revived series on Dave has consistently delivered some of the highest ratings for non-Public Service Broadcasting commissions in the UK.[4][5][6] The show has been critically acclaimed, and has a Metacritic score of 84/100.[7] Series XI was voted "Best Returning TV Sitcom" and "Comedy of the Year" for 2016 by readers for the British Comedy Guide.[8] In a 2019 ranking by Empire, Red Dwarf came 80 on a list of the 100 best TV shows of all time.[9]

Understand why the "funeral" sequence was deleted. We are Grateful. My brother and I watched the series and bought the VHS tapes for the first 10 series. Laughed our butts off. They returned.

The funeral scene was incredible and was very important to the Red Dwarf story. It helped define Rimmer more as I feel that there was a lot of confusion over whether the hologram and the formally living Rimmer were the same people. I also always wondered what happened to the crew’s remains.

Most of these were probably cut for time as much as anything else. Episode 1 also had new material written, filmed and added after the initial recording, so they probably cut more from it to fit in those new scenes.

I like the first two series the best, I understand why it went the way it did. But just the three of them is so interesting, very melancholy and lonely indeed. The same premise, a man, a feline humanoid, and a hologram of the man he hated all alone on a massive empty ship, could make for science fiction horror instead of comedy very easily.

I hated the retcon that they had dated and she dumped him. Him not having the guts to ask her out and now its too late gave him a vulnerability also that she appeared to be flirting back made it seem like it truly was a missed opportunity that defines him. Making him hung up on the woman who dumped him diminished his character and was kind of creepy/stalkery

Many of my friends complained too, but I think that those seasons were still great including the new interactions with Kochanski. But ignoring her, there were some epic episodes in these seasons - like the part where they are back on RD and go to prison. It is all super absurd. But maybe my impression could have been different, because I first saw RD with a dubbing.

Funny enough season 6 & 7 was the first I saw. I was about 8-9 years old at the time so tbh for me season 7 brings back a lot of nostalgia and I really enjoy then epsidoes as a result.

It was Jenna Russell. The theme tune was recorded around the time of the original planned recording dates for Series 1 in January 1987 (which got delayed to September due to a BBC strike), back when Alexandra Pigg (not a singer) was cast as Kochanski. She couldn’t do the rescheduled dates and so Claire Grogan was brought in.
