I love how much Red Dwarf will explain complex sci-fi and physics concepts, yet is so happy to do the most enjoyably dumb and simple jokes. I mean that in a good way. Put it this way- it's a show that explains things like white holes, time travel, different dimensions, and what are the most memorable jokes from it? Probably things like: the shrinking boxers, Mr. Flibble, the Vindaloovians, Winnie the Pooh getting the firing squad, all the Space Corps directives Rimmer thinks he knows, Cat trying to relieve himself in a backwards reality, "Everybody's dead, Dave", Talkie Toaster asking if anyone would like any toast, "Step up to blue alert/Sir, are you absolutely sure? 10:30 I see what the US suits were doing - they were truly trying to turn Red Dwarf into an American sitcom. US evening sitcoms of the 70s-90s were written assuming the audience is distracted. They're having dinner, cleaning up, having family time, etc. These shows weren't designed to be watched, they were designed to be *watched at.* Hence the focus on standalone one-liners and a disinterest in plotting. This same logic, btw, is why other famously well-written US comedies like Police Squad and Arrested Development failed. They demanded more attention and active viewing from the audience than they were 'supposed' to.

Red Dwarf is a series that I've loved since the very beginning, that I watched in my last years at Secondary School. I'm 48 now! Red Dwarf has been with me for the vast majority of my life and I probably love it even more today than I used to. I literally near constantly watch the entire series from the start to the latest movie and I've been doing that for over 20 years now! It's a shame that we never got the movie when Red Dwarf was at peak popularity and I'm amazed that we never got a great Red Dwarf video game. There's certainly still chance on the second of those wishes. I hope that Dave gives us more series as Red Dwarf: Promised Land showed that there's still loads of life left in Red Dwarf (I just hope Red Dwarf isn't only loved by old farts like myself, fingers crossed it keeps picking up younger viewers to keep interest in such a great show!)

I was born in 1985 so I started watching Red Dwarf from season 3 onwards. This was absolutely must watch tele along with Star Trek The Next Gen, and while on a smaller scale I didn't think it looked cheaper. The best season by far has to be season 5 as every episode is iconic. Half of what made Red Dwarf was the characters being lost in space just looking for a good time and being forced to coexist with each other out of necessity while all having vastly different personalities. The other half was the amazingly funny situations they would be put in by using classic sci-fi tropes/mechanics, like time travel, or replicators, or a morphing alien, or virtual reality, etc. Dare I say it was more imaginative than Star Trek. Unfortunately, after a 4 year gap from season 6, they came back with season 7 and I was greatly disappointed. while the first episode had quite a good sci-fi concept with the President Kennedy shooting the comedy was really lacking. The rest of the season just got worse. Rimmer being replaced by Kochanski just sucked. Something about the dynamic was lost and also by having the crew returned in season 8 too. The great sc-fi situations had mostly gone as well. The only bit I think I cracked a smile at was when they were being knocked about all over the captain's quarters. And the change to Kryten's character was just weird. He wasn't one of the boys anymore and neither was Kochanski. Obviously I'm showing my own bias here but that is what the show established what it was at it's core. It was a British show for lads or maybe anyone who likes laddish stuff. I believe I watched Back to Earth and was so fed up it I just abandoned ship. I found out years later that Rob Grant had left after season 6 and it definitely shows. I suspect he was vital to coming up with the core ideas of the show. I will always have a fond place for Red Dwarf seasons 1-6 (with 1+2 acting as prequels for me). Seasons 4-6 will always be some of the best tele I have ever seen and that is due to the writing and is a testament to the writing talent we used to have in this country. Other than the first season of Noel Fieldings Luxury Comedy I don't think I've seen such quality British writing since the days of the IT Crowd which ended in 2010. Maybe one day that will change back and we can have a comedy renaissance.

I'll be honest, while seasons 5 and 6 are my absolute favourites, I've absolutely adored 10, 11 and 12. They really pulled the series back after the stumble of Back To Earth.

Thank you Rowan for over 2 hours of enjoyable content talking about this wonderful wacky but frightfully intelligent show. Theres rumours that Grant productions want to create a prequel so perhaps your KZbin essay isn't quite finished 🤔 😉 Thank you 😊

It is sad and I feel torn because red dwarf was never quite as good again as it was before the partnership broke up. But I can't really blame Rob Grant because you can't keep writing something you have no enthusiasm for anymore and having read (Colony), watched (The Strangerers) or listened to (The Quanderhorn xperimentations) the stuff he did after he left I'm glad he did so he could write the fresh, new things he was more interested in. The Quanderhorn xperimentations radio showis especially fun if anyone wants a recommendation.

Thank you for this one too. I like that with Bab 5 you didn't mention the DS9 controversy and for this you missed the delay due to that false accusation against CC. Great work and just a little bit of a shame you hadnt watched all the Dave stuff before doing it.

Even though I do agree that season 6 is peak Red Dwarf, season 8 is the one I have the most fun with. I really like the concept of them in the brig of the ship and the return of the crew is a really nice change of pace

Excellent work Rowan. Keep watching the new Dwarf. It never reaches the highs of series 5 or 6 but it’s comfortably as good as 3,4 and 8.

Hope you do a part 3. The thing with Back to Earth was that it was suppose to be two parts. Part 3s budget came from what was suppose to be a clip show with the cast re-acting the clips.

I've just binged the new seasons post-Back to Earth and to be honest I think you'll love them. Obviously they'll never quite have the charm and heights of the original 8 series but to be completely frank they've done something great in managing to bring it back to what made it great in the original 8. Give them a watch, I'd love to see a Part 3 where you talk about them.

I'm personally torn between s4 and s6 as my favourite. I really liked the inclusion of a narrative arc in s6 along with the recurring Space Corp Directive jokes. Limiting the main set to Starbug kinda made sense by that point too. Rimmerworld might be my favourite episode here. S7 was a dissapointment although Duct Soup stands out for me, exploring the new character dynamics with a more modest plot. I enjoyed s8 a lot more at the time, as a whole it has merit although in hindsight it seems a little stretched for ideas after the initial 3-parter. The current Dave-era is unusually consistant in both quality and appearance, i'm not sure yet whether it holds up to multiple rewatches like the classics however. I hope we'll get a proper review of these on here too, one day.

My least favourite thing about 8 is how brief and disjointed it feels with all the multi-parters. Cassandra is a good episode and I would have liked more stand alone episodes

It seems we eerily have the exact same opinion on the various series of Red Dwarf! I agree the Dave stuff isn't as good overall, but I maintain the Moose Joke from Series X is one of the most finely crafted gags of the entire show.

26:34 you have to adjust for inflation on that otherwise "£1500000" is a meaningless number. When adjusted for inflation from the early 90s, that would be like every season cost 3 million pounds.
