hi Dave! Glad I got to say hi at the Bild Expo at Javits Center recently. Love your videos. Back in the day a red filter was my favorite with B&W film. Mainly for what it did to the sky. After shooting digital for the longest I dusted off the film camera and started shooting film again. And yes, I got another red filter. I will compare it to what I can do in the computer. Thanks for the video!

I am an old film guy and, just newly reintroducing myself to photography through digital. My biggest question was monochromatic filters and whether or not they would produce the same effects in digital as we used to do in black and white back in the day. Thank you for the update.

Bought a few of these a couple months ago (red, pink, orange, blue, etc.) and didn’t know their original use… thanks to this video now I know 🙏🏻

Inspirational ! I have a greater appreciation for the distinct effect the Red #25 and #29 Red filters have in photography and in my particularly favourite the dark red motorcycle windscreen.

I'm going to he that guy - don't use one of these color filters on your digital camera. The digital sensor use pixels that respond to red, green, blue. Using a filter that limits the light to one of those channels could result in loss of details. That's why I like RAW conversion or using a camera profile - like Fuji's monochrome + red profile.

Just got my pentax ME some fresh batteries, two rolls of HP5, going to push to 1600...went to a small locally owned shop here in Edmonton and got a red filter for $12...rad.

Why do we use a dark red infrared filter to make green foliage look white instead of a dark green filter?
@ke4uyp6 жыл бұрын
Red filter for diving The best subjects for filters are coral gardens, divers, wrecks, big pelagics, and schools of fish. Filters work best on sunny days, when there is lots of light, although now that most cameras perform very well at medium and high ISOs, they can be used in far more conditions than in the early days of digital. No underwater filter can work at all depths because the filtering effect of seawater increases rapidly as you descend. The goal of many dedicated underwater filters is to work with the camera’s manual white balance to give as wide an operating window as possible. No photographer wants a filter that is perfect for the wreck at 50ft (15m) and stops them photographing the group of dolphins at the surface at the end of the dive.

I shoot in infrared and I've always been awful darn smug in my belief that all these silly-ass applications and filters which promise you a convincing IR effect are laughable. After watching this video, I opened Photoshop to try out a few black and white filters. There was one for infrared. Right, like that's going to impress an IR maestro like me who uses the real thing. So, I gave it a try. Har har har! Well, I now offer my sincerest apologies for being such a presumptuous jerk.

I still use my colour filters on my film cameras, in fact my Zorki 4K almost permanently has a yellow filter on it. If you use the monochrome setting on a canon camera and shoot RAW you’ll still get a colour image, shoot Jpeg and it’s a monochrome image.

A Red 25 filter can also be used on a camera that has been converted to Full Spectrum, it will produce Goldie Infrared Photographs. I think the coloured filters are basically used for IR photography purposes these days.

Idk anything about photography. I was just looking for a red filter for my weaponlight. But this was very interesting.

So if you want to use your DSLR like a point and shoot with no flexibility and get a 'passable’ result, use a filter. If you want to take full advantage of the maximum information capture and flexibility of shooting RAW, to create the best image you possibly can, do it in post.

This is truly one of the most informative videos I have seen. When you just assume all is done in post to get more clarity and richness in skies with Black and white, you miss out on this little gem of insight. Many many thanks for this video!!

just when i read a bunch of tutorials that said colored filters were dead... confusing.
@footrotdog6 жыл бұрын
This tutorial just said color filters are dead too but it took 2 minutes to do it. If you convert in post, you can apply the filter there along with any other filters without physically owning any of them. . If you shoot with a filter in camera, that image is stuck in b&w forever but I'm sure Adorama could do you a good deal on some filters anyway. They have a Leica orange for $125. You'll only need one for each sized lens you own. :)

DO NOT USE colour filters on digital sensors. Although this wont end the world it is technically wrong and should be avoided at all costs. The digital sensor responds very differently than the BW film. The sensor is essentially a BW but overlapped with a colour bayer pattern which is utilized to interpret data and convert from RAW to BW jpeg. If you are really shooting for fine art printing , you would never shoot JPEG anyway. I am surprised Adorama is publishing videos of such technically low value. I used to love AD TV so much. :-(
