@FTORC1 "Duct tape was originally manufactured for the U.S. military during World War II by the Johnson & Johnson Permacel division, to prevent water from seeping into ammunition boxes. Because "water rolled off it like a duck" (it was waterproof) and because it was made using "cotton duck" (similar to the material in cloth medical tapes), the new invention was originally called "duck tape."

@TheShadowMan2008 The original "duct" tape, is a derivative of masking tape. With the creation of "duck" tape, which is made with duck cloth, the more modern "duct" tape became perfected. The original "duct" tape, was also water resistant. "Duck" tape was made by permacel, then later Manco. "Duct" tape, was made by the Scotch corporation of 3M. Manco, however, was the first to officially shrink wrap the rolls to make them easier to stack.

JJJC is actually right in the fact that it was originally used for the army for its resistance to oils and what not from getting in the gun. Its firsat name was actually duck tape wasnt called duct tape til after the war and the housing market boomed. they used it as duct joiners but is actually ineffective as a duct joiner. P.S dont misinterpit this as an insult to duck tape i have at least 4 rols in my tool box and some more in the house. its truly the greates way to halfass fix anything lol
@FTORC113 жыл бұрын
@TheShadowMan2008 "Duck tape (the WWII military version) was first created and manufactured in 1942 (approximate date) by the Johnson and Johnson Permacel Division. Its closest predecessor was medical tape." The main difference? It was green. It's no surprise that there is a "Duck" brand. The duck brand has been around for over 50 years, and is a product of the Manco incorporation. Masking tape was made in 1924, followed by scotch tape in 1927.

Duct tape is still used on ducts, contrary to what it seems some of you think. And this is coming from someone who was a contractor for many years. The static side of the heater ducts do use fassion tape, but the flexible ducts use standard duct tape. Duck tape came about, from the average consumer mispronouncing duct tape. Kreblorn1983, you are referring to a variant called "gun tape". The name 200mph tape was born from it staying on the grilles of nascar race cars, exceeding 200mph.

The tape you mistake for "duct tape" invented "well before the 3rd Reich," was masking tape. “Adhesive tape (specifically masking tape) was invented in the 1920's by Richard Drew of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, Co. (3M).”

@TheShadowMan2008 My information is from 3M. The manufacturers of duct tape. Later, a variant, called "Duck tape" came into existence. The original, duct tape, was almost always pronounced "duck tape" due to the alliteration of the double "T" sounds. Being this was a common mistake, they created "duck" tape. The actual name, duct tape, was aptly named for it's original purpose. To seal joints on HVAC duct's. It was called duct tape, well before the 3rd Reich. Before Nazi's existed.

@TheShadowMan2008 It's time to get your facts straight, junior. Try actually learning something, rather than relying on the internet to feed you answers that other idiots post. If you actually read patent information, learn a few things about history, and learn company history, all the REAL information is there. Too many people are confusing 2 different companies, and different products. In the end, they are now the same. However, they originated as 2 different things.
