Great interpretation. I always saw it as the man couldn’t attach emotionally to her. Her emotions showed through and his emotions closed down. (“Raised by my dad, Girl of the day, He was my man, That was the way...”) He saw his father’s detachment in relationships and this shaped how he conducted himself.

Jamel, I'm glad you mentioned Zeppelin right in the beginning, because this song always gave me a Zep vibe, not only in the guitar riff, but particularly when the flute sound kicks in. Indeed, guitarist John Frusciante has stated that Zep was the inspiration behind the riff, from the song "Friends" off Led Zep III.

One of my favorite RHCP songs, thank you! There are 17 tracks on this album, almost unheard of back in the day. They asked the great Rick Ruben to produce this album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, who had turned them down on previous albums when Anthony and the late Slovak were still using. He agreed finally, he wanted them to record somewhere that would bring the band together and was unconventional, they settled on the mansion of the late Harry Houdini. The band moved in for over a month while recording, except Chad Smith (drummer looks like Will Farrell) who went home at night to be with wife, although he later admitted going home due to the house being haunted, and while the rest of the band liked that aspect and believed the spirits to be friendly, it freaked Smith out too much. The album would go on to arguably be their best to this day, Rolling Stone listed it in their 100 greatest albums of all time. ✌️❤️️

Maybe Pearl Jam's track Black popped in your head. Or you meant Ten when you mentioned Metallica's black album. It's all good though.

This is when they were still GOOD. BSSM was a great album. So is "One Hot Minute " but love the cascading drums in this cut.

Absolutely one of the best heartbreak songs ever composed. Anthony's lyrics are about his relationship with artist, Carmen Hawk. Their relationship ended pretty badly, as you can tell by the lyrics. The swirling vibe of the music definitely has that Zeppelin vibe, and I love Chad Smith's drums on the track. And yes, he's been compared to Will Farrell, lol! There's another track on that album that's an even bigger tearjerker called 'I Could Have Lied,' which is about Sinead O'Connor and Anthony Kiedis' brief romance. It is a super bluesy flame of a song. Definitely check it out. The whole album, 'Blood Sugar Sex Magick,' is a masterpiece. It's the album that put the Peppers on the map in 1991.

Will Ferrell nails the drum rolls on this...even brought his cow bell. But seriously, been in this situation far more times than I want to admit.

The drum fills are so sick on this one, and I still think are the utter magic of this true gem on BSSM!

Loved your reaction. FYI the song is about his mum and his dad's relationship. The lyric of 'raised by my dad, girl of the day' is his how his dad basically had a different lover every day. It's a powerful song, about his childhood.

some of my absolute favs by them: venice queen, soul to squeeze, power of equality, snow (hey oh), and if you want a deep dive check out "circle of the noose" (would've been a huge hit but they never released it)

Saw the chili peppers in concert for this album.at the ASU activity center in TempeArizona. Maybe 5000 people there if that. Pearl Jam opened. They were great then Nirvana came out they were incredible Cobain at his best. But the Chili Peppers blew them all away. They came out with this song naked wearing just a sock to cover up their privates. Flea is a maniac Live One of the greatest nights of my life.... never will forget it
