In a VH1 Behind the Music special the Red Hot Chili Peppers explained that "Give It Away" is about the theory, "The more you give, the more you receive, so why not give it all away?" Lead singer Anthony Kiedis drew inspiration for this song from the German singer Nina Hagen when he came across one of her jackets that he liked. She insisted he take it, explaining that giving stuff away creates good energy. Kiedis and Hagen had a brief affair in 1983.

The lyrical meaning behind “Give It Away” is centered around the philosophy of selflessness and altruistic behavior. Anthony Kiedis' girlfriend in the early '80s was punk rock singer Nina Hagen. Being several years Kiedis’ senior, she became a role-model while he was addicted to heroin: According to Kiedis: “She realized how young and inexperienced I was then, so she was always passing on gems to me, not in a preachy way, just by seizing on opportunities.” When Kiedis was looking through her closet he came across a jacket he liked, and commented to Hagen that it was “really cool”. Upon expressing this, Hagen immediately told him to keep it. Her reasoning behind this selflessness was due to an attempt to constantly make her life more enjoyable, and explained to Kiedis that “if you have a closet full of clothes and you try to keep them all, your life will get very small. But if you have a full closet and someone sees something they like, if you give it to them, the world is a better place.” The act was something that affected Kiedis significantly because he had never before experienced such an enlightening ideology on life. Growing up in Los Angeles he had always thought differently than Hagen; instead of giving material possessions away and being free thinking, the vocalist believed one must take what they want as no one will provide for you. Instead, he now adopted Hagen’s philosophy: “It was such an epiphany that someone would want to give me her favorite thing. That stuck with me forever. Every time I’d be thinking ‘I have to keep,’ I’d remember ‘No, you gotta give away instead.’ When I started going regularly to (drug and alcohol) meetings, one of the principles I had learned was that the way to maintain your own sobriety is to give it to another suffering alcoholic. Every time you empty your vessel of that energy, fresh new energy comes flooding in.” Flea’s bassline for "Give It Away" allowed Kiedis to recall this incident and he believed the music paired perfectly with the lyrics. During the verses, Kiedis departs from the idea of unselfishness and sings about a variety of topics including long time friend River Phoenix, musician Bob Marley, and various sexual themes including fertility and lust.

@@pyrovania"Smack Jack" was released in 1982 as the lead single from Nina Hagen's debut solo album "NunSexMonkRock." Although the message of the song is clear, it was not specifically written about Kiedis. Smack Jack was actually written by Hagen's Dutch ex-boyfriend and father of her daughter Cosma Shiva, Ferdinand "Ferdi" Karmelk, who was a heroin addict and later died of AIDS in 1988. Kiedis had a passionate fling with Hagen in 1983. They met in March of that year after one of the early Chili Peppers shows at the Cathay de Grande in Los Angeles. Hagen and Kiedis had a physical relationship for about a month, cooling off once Hagen’s more serious boyfriend returned from out of town. Seven years his senior, Hagen was an experienced “wise soul” and a worldly mentor of sorts to Kiedis; his exposure to her way of life and her vastly different worldview led to many changes in his lifestyle. Btw, Hagan's second solo studio album "Angstlos" released in September 1983 (English version "Fearless" released in November 1983), is notable for including the song "What It Is", which was written by Flea and Anthony Kiedis. This album was released nearly a year before the Chili Peppers released their 1984 debut album. The Chili Peppers also recorded a demo of "What It is" around the same time as Hagen recorded her version. Their demo can be found on their 1994 "Out in LA" album.

A few key lyrical passages "Give It away" that your hunch is correct. The Bob Marley verse is entirely an homage to a funk/reggae musician who was very much loving energy and friendliness. "Don't want to be a miser" - a miser is an old person who hoards wealth. The "won't let you shiver" lyric can certainly be interpreted as taking care of a homeless person, but more generally is giving someone comfort and warmth when they need it. Yeah, they're nuts, especially at that point in their careers, but this was a huge hit for a variety of reasons. It's a fun song, great bass line groove, and definitely a positive message once you realize once it's really about.

The video for "Give It Away" was directed by the French multimedia artist Stephane Sednaoui. He initially worked as a photographer for fashion magazines in the 1980s. Throughout the ’80s he shot fashion editorials and covers featuring artists such as Madonna and Courtney Love. Sednaoui was influenced by Bill Brandt, one of the most important British photographers of the 20th century, and Andy Warhol. Regarding "Give It Away", Sednaoui mentioned: "I feel that the style and composition in the video reflect Brandt’s experimental work of monochrome images of body parts. The video, which was shot in the 90’s, features the members of the band moving manically to the track along with other models. I like the direction of this video as I feel the quick change of abstract shots in the video is effective and works to the advantage of the theme of the song." During the backwards guitar solo, band member John Frusciante was filmed waving a large aluminum ribbon; Anthony Kiedis was initially apprehensive about Sednaoui's desire for the guitarist to do so, believing he would tell the director "'F**k you and take that dancing ribbon and shove it up your French a**, buddy' but (Frusciante) gladly went off and made love to the air with this dancing ribbon. He would have danced around for hours with that thing." The footage was edited in reverse to complement the solo.

Anthony Keidis has been very open about being Native American (Apache), and listening to your interpretation reminded me of this. Native Americans have never really been big on ownership, whether it's land or material things, so there's a long tradition of trading and bartering so that everyone has what they need. There is even a line in the song about being "down with the PowWow". So, while this song seems to be inspired by many things ( like Bob Marley), I think the Native American concept of sharing so that nobody goes without figures into the song heavily.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' song "Give It Away" is about the philosophy of selflessness and altruism. The song's title comes from the phrase "give it away", which is a common lyric in the song and is based on an experience that vocalist Anthony Kiedis had with his former girlfriend, Nina Hagen, in the early 1980s. Kiedis's philosophy is that true happiness comes from giving to others without expecting anything in return.
