I listened to this song with my bassist friend and 2-3 other musicians friends while my band and I were rehearsing in a small house for a week. We really did relate to the melancholia, the atmosphere of the song. It was connected to this moment. My friend passed away in February of 2021. I was a late for his burial day, and at the exact moment I went into the cemetery, this song was playing through the speakers before his coffin was about to get buried. We never really talked too much about how this song was important for us, and when I heard it this day I felt numb and deeply sad. And it hit me like a ton of bricks, how much we loved each other and how much I will miss him.

It is both heart wrenching but very personal how a song will do that to you, and never let go. Forever bittersweet for the now and after. @@HerrRaccoon Yeah if compared to their other big mainstream hits like Californication and Can't Stop, yes it has way lesser YT views, but objectively speaking, 32 mil is *not* an underrated figure by any means, especially for an alt rock number. Stuff like Mellowship Sinky in B Major, the B Side tracks from almost all of their albums (with John and Josh), and some masterful tracks from By The Way (Warm Tape, Dosed, Venice Queen and I Could Die for You) are what's really underrated, considering how big of a band RHCP is. But, you know what's truly underrated? John's solo albums, and even Josh's. I think we both can agree on that.

FOR THOSE WHO WANNA KNOW WHY CHAD AINT HERE I PICKED THIS UP FROM WIKIPEDIA: The song tells of a road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway in which lead singer Anthony Kiedis, guitarist John Frusciante and bassist Flea surfed at Big Sur following Frusciante's return to the band. Drummer Chad Smith did not take the trip with his bandmates due to other commitments and also because he wasn't into surfing. As such, Chad Smith only appears briefly halfway through the video, arriving in a boat. As you can see here 1:50 there are 4 people.

I generally agree with your interpretation. Funny how lyrics can become personalized for each listener if they are laid out right. I got pretty deep into a spiritual point of view that says that we are all and the entire universe, really just One thing. The individuality and separation is a appearance but not true kind of like water in a mirage. Also, the sun is often used as a metaphor for that "One thing". Loved the song from the first listening (like most RHCP songs for me) and the chorus really speaks to that for me, "these smiling eyes are just a mirror for (the sun)". We are all reflections of that One thing in the universe. Also, being a native of California and a lover of road trips all my life, of course the song feeds that in my soul as well. Also love the reference of "the One" which I think in literal terms is HWY 1, of course. That great coastal HWY. Just great stuff in a really nice and peaceful acoustic piece and hey, Chad is great, but there's always a time and place to forego any instrument too, and often drums. Silence is always the most powerful aspect of music, strange as it may sound. It is that from which music arises and into which it resolves. Learning the song myself and my buddy's learning the bass line. Should be fun! Peace.
