Separate my side, I don't I don't believe it's bad Slit my throat it's all I ever I heard your voice through a photograph I thought it up and brought up the past Once you know you can never go back I gotta take it on the other side Centuries are what it meant to me A cemetery where I marry the sea Stranger things could never change my mind I gotta take it on the other side Take it on the other side Take it on, take it on How long, how long will I slide? Separate my side, I don't I don't believe it's bad Slit my throat it's all I ever Pour my life into a paper cup The ashtray's full and I'm spillin' my guts She wants to know, am I still a slut? I've got to take it on the other side A scarlet starlet and she's in my bed A candidate for a soul mate bled Push the trigger and pull the thread I gotta take it on the other side Take it on the other side Take it on Take it on How long, how long will I slide? Separate my side, I don't I don't believe it's bad Slit my throat it's all I ever Turn me on, take me for a hard ride Burn me out, leave me on the other side I yell and tell it that it's not my friend I tear it down, I tear it down And then it's born again How long, how long will I slide? For those who are wondering, this song refers to one of the band members, Hillel Slovak who died of a heroin overdose on June 25, 1988. This song talks about his struggles from this addiction. The name of the song, “Otherside” is also used to say “afterlife”. Although it is sung by Anthony Kiedis, it is supposed to be Slovak’s voice and his perspective towards the situation. This song talks about how Slovak knows how much the drug has affected him and how he must kill himself to end his addiction. This song also shows his struggles to end this addiction by saying, “I yell and tell it (drugs) that it’s not my friend; I tear it down tear it down, and then it’s born again.” His constant struggle is also shown in the music video which shows a man waking up and then finding himself in the same position at the end of the video which means that it is a cycle that never changes and that never will change. The video also shows his struggles by having a scene where the man (Slovak) is fighting against his shadow which shows that he was initially fighting with himself due to the addiction. In general, this song is not only showing people Slovak’s struggles but also showing many other people’s struggles with the same problem.

Sometimes sobriety costs more than you can know..that level of authenticity can cause the addict to sacrifice long time friends who won't also follow various 10 step progrms. People who have been in AA for a long time start to judge their friends by the same standards AA uses to judge the people who attend the meetings.

This is the first music video I've ever seen in 2002 when I was 4, or maybe it was 2001. I'll never forget knocking on my 20yo brother's door and getting into his tiny tiny room and him taking me onto his lap and showing me this video. I was truly mesmerised. I watched it completely still until the end and I think I asked to watch it again. I'm pretty sure it's my very first memory, and I think it affected all my visual and sonic preferences later in life.

crazy how the true meaning just hits you out of nowhere years later, right when you need it.
This song was written about Hillel Slovak, the founding guitarist of the red hot chili peppers who died of a heroin overdose in 1988. One of my best friends Kevin died from a Heroin overdose in 2011 so this song hits pretty close to home. May the souls of the both of them, and anyone else who has ever succumbed to addiction rest in peace. 🌹

@KristDaneXKXIV7 ай бұрын
It's not about drug addiction or depression. It's actually about the slit on my neck that's all I've ever had literally since I was 5 months old. When they did a surgery on me & put a microchip in my head that's not my friend & a demon & leaving the scar tissue I wish you saw, my lonely view. I eventually electrocuted myself with 240 volts & fried the microchip taking me to the other side almost died but was finally free. Actually I might have died for a minute or 2 & came back to life I don't know cause no one else was there when I did it. I couldn't see from any where from 10 to 20 minutes. I just remember being shot across the room then I was on my back on the floor & couldn't see, hear or move but became more & more conscious & aware but as things started to return for the first time since they put it in me I could tell it wasn't working & it was great.
