love how you tell about your childhood xx p.s. a add turmeric into the lentils too and salt only after it is cooked through (salt seems to make dal cooking a little harder). I also add dal into the vegetable masala (not the other way round) so that the masala flavours that are still on the pan come out to the dal.

I have to say, I've been making this for years. I come back to this video time and time again. It's so good, easy, healthy, CHEAP and it freezes so well. It's both a staple in my weekend batch cook where I portion up doubled, tripled, quadrupled batches to freeze to have easy meals. I also turn to this for a fast meal during the week when I just don't have time for anything else. It's so much for appealing now in this economy with how expensive meats have gotten. It's a delicious, easy, cheap, high protein, filling meal. I hope more people find it.

I first tried dhal when I worked as a security guard in one Indian kitchen and I'm telling you, I was very much fascinated. All food I tried was super good, but dhal is something simple, yet the best, at lest for me. Also, I have only nice words for my Indian friends. I don't work there anymore, but I still message one of them, and sometimes I get to see him, when he can come downtown. God bless India!

i love cooking videos but only watch a couple channels because i get sick of these "food blog" and "food-tuber" style videos where the recipe is 80% the cooks life story, 10% showing off their cooking gadgets, and 10% actual cooking. I tried looking up some recipe on google not too long ago and the recipe literally started off with talking about the cooks great grandmother for half the recipe, and you know a recipe cant be that great when it starts off in 1908 and we have to slog through paragraphs of some Edwardian era maids life before we get to a soup recipe.

Real Health food? Really? This is masoor dhal (lentils). You can eat 1 kg of chicken or beef or fish and nothing will happen to you. However if you eat 50 gms of these lentils, you will bloated within the next few hours. :-) Health foods are fruits, oily fish and vegetables, not lentils.

Rowen Fernandes bloating most often indicates you aren’t getting enough fiber in your diet, and actually need to be consuming more high-fiber food such as lentils and other pulses and legumes

Hi Hari, I am an American who has become absolutely enthralled with Indian cooking and culture and I love your videos so much. In my Indian cooking journey - I noticed with many dhal recipes - garlic and ginger is chopped and added when making the masala portion - whereas in a lot of other dishes ginger garlic paste is used instead. Is it possible you can help me understand the different applications as to why they should be added as chopped and not in a paste?
@HariGhotra4 жыл бұрын
Hi That is great to know - so pleased that you are enjoying the videos. The difference is really personal preference. I prefer not to buy garlic, ginger pastes because I prefer to use fresh so I use what I have in my fridge and its quicker to chop or grate rather then get a blender out. I also like the texture of garlic slices in my dhal. If I wanted to cook something with a silky smooth sauce I may then blitz the ginger and garlic to a paste and use that. I also sometimes blitz to make a homemade paste of ginger and garlic if I have a lot of it that needs using up. I will cover with oil and and keeps for a few months in the fridge. Does that help and answer your question? I would also urge you to download my free app so you can ask me questions and I will respond directly. Just search Hari Ghotra in your app store. Thanks so much Hari

@@HariGhotra thank you for the encouragement. I'll definitely check out the website. I'd watched 10 Dahl videos before I found yours. I may not have known how to make it but knew what I and my partner liked to eat : - ) and it was as promised - delicious, so I'm sure I'll find more on your channel/app. Thanks again.

Great recipe! In my family we always add the salt after the dahl has cooked. We found that the salt in with the dahl at the beginning keeps the grains separate. Love the fried chillies❣️🔥

Well I like your British accent from Toronto of guyanese origin in the west indies. Our dall is cooked with yellow split peas boiled for about 2 hours with garlic and turmeric then chunkay with oil ,garlic and Cuman. We use dall to compliment any dishes with meat or vegetables

OMG...this was so good.....my first time having lentils this way. the aroma...texture....taste...absolutely delicious. going back to the kitchen for a second bowlful. i did not have any ghee or fenugreek...but still amazing! Do fenugreek seeds taste the same as the leaves? i've never used either before...just wondering.... thanks for sharing your talents
@HariGhotra5 жыл бұрын
Hi I'm so pleased you enjoyed this so much. Fenugreek seeds are much stronger than the leaves also called methi. I wouldnt use the seeds or powder as a substitute just miss them out if you don't have them but you can order them from here - www.harighotra.co.uk/shop/indian-spices-for-sale Please let me know if you try any of the other recipes too. Thanks for watching Hari

I find Indian food the best cure for a blue mood on a wet, chilly, cloudy day. The fantastic, intense and to westerners exotic spice flavors conspire to brighten up ones mood. Thanks for this mouthwatering recipe.

Thanks for the vid Hari. One of the best methods Ive seen on cooking lentils. Thinking of eating them on their own 3 times a week, as a health kick.

Thank you for this excellent recipe and demonstration. I cooked this for lunch with a few adaptations due to lack of ingredients: Some Tabasco instead of chilli Fresh rosemary instead of fenugreek Tomato paste in a tube instead of fresh Fresh parsley instead of fresh coriander A really delicious, simple and quick meal, I had mine with boiled rice and I made a chappatti to go with it. Thank you very much Hari.

I love lentils but I got tired of cooking it the same way every time. I found this and I decided to try it out. I couldn't find fenugreek leaves and garam masala but I asked my Indian friend and she gave me some. My Friend was even giving me tips on how to make it better but I told her that I was following the recipe in this video exactly. After I was done I asked her to taste it and give me her verdict. She went from giving me tips to asking for this recipe ✌😄 It is absolutely delicious! I am having it with bulgur Thank you so much for this recipe ♥♥♥ God bless you 🙏

I love this video and also the Aloo Gobi video from Hari. Watched it many times and have her on video while cooking to make sure the procedure's right. My husband says this is the best dhal he ate in his whole life! He's had many dhals in his life so I am so happy to say this. The wonderful thing is, this is quick and easy and delicious. Healthy too! So this has become our favorite Hari's dish for now. I've made it for ourselves and also taught my grown up kids how to make it.
