Rob Zombie's Munsters trailer took the world by storm! It's sure to be the biggest hit since Morbius and as such, Mike and Jay took some time during their most recent Half in the Bag shoot to discuss it with a level of depth and thoughtfulness that only a trailer for a 2022 Munsters re-boot deserves.

I saw Rob Zombie live in concert two days ago. He played this on a big screen in between songs - most awkward audience reaction I've ever seen. A smattering of claps and then dead silence until the next song came on.

The main visual problem, is that they are going for a campy 60 neon style, but they obviously shot it on a hd digital camera. So you actually see every nuance, and in opposition, it destroy the eerie cinematic vibe of the whole image. Instead of a dreamy or psychotronic feel, a la suspiria, willy wonka or wizard of oz, you just see adult in ugly classic monster makeups with too much lighting, surrounded by cheap props.This really looks like a fan made movie droped directly on youtube
@karl_alan
@karl_alan 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Glad I'm not the only one that thinks they were going for something more Argento with the lighting, and just couldn't land it. Even in 4k, suspiria's lighting still has the impact this one wishes it had.
@NYC_Goody
@NYC_Goody 2 жыл бұрын
How would you go about fixing that while still attaining the aesthetics you're looking for? Because I completely agree. And I love those types of looks in movies with the eerie multi colored lights and smoke and whatever else. But also agree it just doesn't land here. Maybe simply toning it down so it's not so abundant for modern cameras?

@@karl_alan If it's a truer representation of Argento lighting, have a look at "Last night in Soho" by Edgar Wright. But then that's hardly fair as Edgar knows how to direct a damned good film.
@mathieulangevin5615
@mathieulangevin5615 2 жыл бұрын
@@NYC_Goody first I think money is a big factor here. A bigger budget would probably make it possible to hier a good dp and set designer, and that would really help. Second, I think shooting on film - once again, money is a factor - would really help convey the look. But i think it's also a question of vision and context, because a good director would know how to use this type of lighting, and when not to. Economy is the name of the game.

If anything, the trailer made we watch the original Munsters to see if it was THIS bad and corny. And no. It's not. I was pleasantly surprised. It made me laugh on multiple occasions and the performances really sell you on the world. Sure it's corny to an extent, but more so because it was made in the 60s. The work arounds they had to do because of the time period and budget constraints adds to the charm. And some of the jokes feel like they could've been written today. Feels more contemporary than you'd think. Also, the actors really do make the series worth watching. So natural and effortlessly funny. Fred Gwynne as Herman is honestly one of the greatest comedic performances I've seen. He's great. As well as everyone involved. The new film feels so forced, it's cringe. There's a video comparing Rob Zombie's imitation intro vs the original and it perfectly encapsulates why the new film looks so bad.

6:43 Maybe I'm giving Rob too much credit, but I assume he planned this to be in black and white like the show. A technique from old TV shows was to use saturated contrasting colors so that the footage converts to black and white better. 0:58 I work at a local TV station and we usually get multiple versions of trailers that isolates certain audio (sound effects, dialogue, music, transition effects). They do this to make it easier for us to edit our own videos. That one seemed to only use dialogue and transition effects. I think a lot of those voices were only used for the trailer and would probably get drowned out by the sound effects and music. I've seen some versions of trailers that sound janky like that for that reason. It's interesting that they don't get leaked more often.

Bryan Fuller actually wrote and produced a "reboot" of the Munsters for network television way back in 2012 called "Mockingbird Lane" starring Eddie Izzard as Grandpa, and even though it only ever had a pilot and was never picked up for a full season, it was better in literally every conceivable way than this strange piece of Rob Zombie garbage.. it had better sets, better acting, better visuals, writing, music... I'm honestly surprised this hasn't inspired anyone to check out the failed pilot for Munsters that came out a few years back. Hannibal's Bryan Fuller made it for NBC and while it wasn't picked up, it was still aired once for Halloween or something. Jerry O'Connell as Herman, Portia De Rossi as Lily, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa, and i think a few other people who were in the range of "oh yeah, that guy from the thing". I thought it was great, with a very dark humor to it, akin to Fuller's previous work on Pushing Daisies.

I definitely remember that show being announced: "Something, Something" Mockingbird Lane. I never did watch it but I recall the promo pictures for it and was curious to see it

@@demonizer133 It was just Mockingbird Lane, a reference to the Munsters address 1313 Mockingbird Lane

I feel like I'm the only huge Munsters fan who is still alive (aside from apparently Rob Zombie), but I'm so fucking hyped for this. The trailer is a mess. Also, Herman Munster in the original series looks identical to Jeremy Clarkson, and I hope I'm not the only one who has noticed that.

Lol well now you are not alone on that, although he only resembles Jeremy when he does certain expressions

Judging by the dislikes on the trailer there are many of us still alive, less of us hyped for this though, lol

Howard Stern is also a big Munsters fan and him and Zombie have talked about it on his show, and Zombie recently sent him a Munsters toy

The guy playing the grandpa is a huge Munsters and old universal monster fan. I guess he's got a nice collection of toys and memorabilia.

Mike was actually probably thinking of “Something in the Way” in all the Batman trailers.
