"My romance".That's not a solo guitar,that's a pure music.Tal has always been a guitar-chord giant.His single -note soloing is also untouchable.

Don't forget to give some love to Steve Novosel, the extraordinary bassist supporting Red and Tal in this video. The way he anchors the trio is amazing. It's so refreshing to see and hear these absolute legends really listening to each other while remaining free to improvise. This is the highest order of jazz.

If you notice that Tal is not comping with 4/4 old school style that they used to do, but music still swings, the bass player is playing three parts walking bass line with changes and complimenting the players and yes playing the rhythm( like a drummer). Tal plays the chords on the ALL OF ME like there are 200-chords. And Red Norvo is the real deal somehow they all mesh together..this is the American art form and their artists in their prime. JAZZ is the American invention. Individual Freedom of expression while they all listen to each other. YES.

All, this a great opportunity to see how Tal approaches rhythm. I met him and asked about it and he said he just did scratching on the records without playing chords. This was in 1997 when he was nearly at the end of his life, so memory fades. He was a very kind mind. I asked him how it felt of being a living legend and he just laughed it off.

Tal recorded two of his best late-career albums around the time of this concert. "Chromatic Palette" with Tommy Flanagan in 1981, and "Cookin' on All Burners" with James Williams in 1982. I don't know if the records tell the whole story of how good or rusty his playing was throughout any given year later in his life, but they definitely document that he could still be on fire at times, and for me, the 1981-82 records find him pretty near his mid-1950s peak.

They are recreating Red's famous trios from 1950-1954, which had no drummers and featured either Tal or Jimmy Raney on guitar, and either Charles Mingus or Red Mitchell on bass. The Savoy Records recordings of Tal, Mingus, and Red are wonderful chamber bebop.

@James Smith - Nothing wrong with audio volume on these videos. Suggestion ... Upgrade your equipment or, meaning no disrespect, have your ears checked ; I did, and having been fitted with hearing aids, found the improvement amazing !
@bobtaylor1705 жыл бұрын
Download a sound booster. I've found that every few days, you have to play around with it, sometimes turning it up, sometimes actually turning it down, but it does a nice job of raising volume.
@russellparratt98595 жыл бұрын
James Smith, you are correct. The sound IS very low. It needs to be up full to hear it properly. Any comparison with a properly recorded upload to youtube proves this. The sarcastic critics in this thread can go and fuck themselves.

This perfectly illustrates why I say if you're going to study jazz guitar listen to vibe and clarinet players. They generally play smooth and melodic lines. Tal plays alot of notes but in my opinion are not melodic.
