i just saw another potato video where the plants look awful and that's when they are ready for harvest. The ugly greens are a result of the potato taking in all the nutrients and signal they are ready. im just learning. your plants are not diseased lol. Great potato harvest!

Awesome harvest! Your channel came up on my feed. The tops die back when they’re ready to harvest. Mine looked like that as well when I pulled mine. I grew mine in bags. Would have loved to have caught those type buckets on sale. 😊🌱

Glad to find your video. Looks like I planted the same variety, and at the same time as well, so I'm happy to see that my plants are dying back at around the same time. Mine look a bit like "blight" hit them, so maybe this is just the way the plants should look? I let some flower this year, so also looking forward to propagating from actual seed next season. Cheers.

see I had the same thing happen to mine but there was some signs of worms. there definitely was a decent yield bit I'm not so sure they looked like that bc of the stage of maturity. I had a late blooming bush that popped up next to the others and it seemed to spread to this new plant while it was still very small. I found black specs on the leaves that you could brush off and also cutting damage to the leaves in small holes

David, nice harvest! I recall you originally planted these in mid February. I am in zone 6b and planted my Burbank Russets in containers in mid March. Perfect timing for this video as my plants are already behaving like yours; like they are crying Uncle to the extremes in Michigan weather, but they aren't even 90 days old. Should I pull mine up also? Or let them dry out? Two days ago they looked beautiful!

Dig around with your fingers to see if you have potatoes. I really harvested a week or so early but I really needed the space for the sweet potatoes. So I did them early. Plus the day after day high temps will do them in.

I've been watching a lot of container harvests and I think there is a clear limit if not overrated effect to hilling potatoes. The idea came to me from watching the mulching method. Rarely does a potato grow at the bottom of the bucket. Seems very localized to where the original chit was placed. Any thoughts?

Just curious…could you hot compost the plants with blight?
@GrowAndEatThis
@GrowAndEatThis 2 жыл бұрын
I do not want to compost any plants that have any disease on them. That will just move the disease to the compost and help the spread the next year. Means that most of the squash and cucumber vines end up tossed way in the back of my property or put in trash bags.

Did you keep adding soil as the plant grow or put all of the soil in originally?
@GrowAndEatThis
@GrowAndEatThis Жыл бұрын
I added soil as the plants grew. But, for the varieties that grow here I have never found the buried stem to produce more potatoes. I think the stem potatoes come from longer growing varieties. Our 'Spring' and 'Fall' are just not long enough for anything other than the quick growing potatoes. For example, the potatoes I have out now are the third planting. The two plantings before were wiped out by weather in the teens. Yet yesterday was near 80F, same for today. But down near freezing three days from now. Not good weather for spring plantings.

Can I save the half potatoe/eye for planting a couple weeks later or would it dry up?
@GrowAndEatThis
@GrowAndEatThis 3 жыл бұрын
Should be able to save it and use it. This year I have replanted some of the sprouting really small harvested potatoes. I am hoping for some little red potatoes for Thanksgiving or Christmas. So far the plants are outside, growing and look great. We have had a couple of nights down in the low 30Fs. Not frost. So I hope they will make it through that. The next week or so is lows in the 50s/60Fs and highs in the low 70Fs. That would be great for the potatoes.

How deep did you plant them?
@GrowAndEatThis
@GrowAndEatThis 2 жыл бұрын
The containers have space to add more soil as the potatoes grow. If the potato has already sprouted then I bury the potato but make sure some of the plant is above the soil level. If just little nubs then 2-3 inches deep. I add more soil as the plants grow. Remember I am in Lawrenceville Ga where it gets really hot. MY potatoes look great now (May 7) but if it gets really hot then they may just fall over in a few weeks. I am hopeful for a longer season since it is supposed to be a little cooler for the nights in the next week.

@@twinfin8571 Try the purple skin white flesh Japanese sweet potato. Treat it like a baking potato. I cook them until the skin is dark and thick like a big baking potato. So good. More like a baked potato than a sweet potato both in taste and in the texture. I do more of these than I do the orange ones.
