I decided to harvest my potatoes planted in a potato box.

So happy to see you PLACE the potatoes in the box, instead of throwing them in hard like most potato reveals I see. I'll never understand that, spend an entire season nurturing their growth only to carelessly bruise them immediately by chucking them hard into a container.
@myebackyardgardennhabitat473 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I also noticed that potatoes with less bruising stores longer.
@MissBetsyLu Жыл бұрын
Are you sure of that? Only Containers that are sitting on pavement, or something like that you mean, right? Blessings everyone.

Also rubbing them so hard to get the dirt off that they rub the tender skins off at the same time…

Gardening- character building and closer relationship with God. This is why it is so helpful to all who desires to get into it. God desires that we will use nature as a lesson book to understand His love for us. We are to give him all the praise at all times.

I would continue to mulch heavily next year. Let all that natural material breakdown. It will help to add nutrients and loosen the soil. Your method in that box is about half way between regular potato growth and the Ruth Stout method which doesn't bury the potatoes at all in the soil but mulchs 6 inches or more. Your harvest was really good and shows how well you took care of the plants.
@myebackyardgardennhabitat4732 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I will do the same, more mulch next potato planting season. I never heard of the Ruth Stout method. Good to know. Thanks! I will continue plant the hybrid approach.
@gregzeigler3850 Жыл бұрын
@@myebackyardgardennhabitat473 I use a hybrid approach as well. The only difference is I use grass clippings to cover my soil. Glad to see, unlike others who just throw away tiny potatoes, you, like me keep them. My wife would make a white gravy and cook them in it. She calls that side "new potatoes". I'm hoping to do well this year.

Beautiful harvest. Little advice, never grow onions around other plants, they release something to get rid of the competition and surrounding plants will suffer. You may have noticed, that the plant next the onion had dies before the others.
@myebackyardgardennhabitat4732 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Very helpful advice. No wonder I was having difficulty in growing potatoes along the front side of the box. I’ll keep that in mind next potato season. Thanks for dropping by! Appreciate it.
@sabicat33372 жыл бұрын
What? Like bulb onions, really? I read you can plant onions with broccoli, but there’s always contradicting results on this one. My broccoli seems to be doing fine, but my onions are only seedlings and it’s winter so they’re not growing. Once the broccoli is harvested I plan to only grow onion in that bed
@kedeglow27432 жыл бұрын
I'm not trying to be contradictory, but I always plant either onions or chives in amoungst my carrots to confuse WhiteFlies. I definately helps with that.

Wow, I have potatoes next to my onions right now - yikes. I have potatoes in several other places as well, so if I lose these, I'll be ok I guess. Thanks so much for that tip.

U need more dirt in that box, potatoes need plenty of dirt. And should be watered at least once a week even if there is mulch in your box.

Where did you get your grow bed, and what variety of red potatoes did you use? I'd like to grow some nice red ones this year.
@myebackyardgardennhabitat473 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for dropping by. I made the box myself using leftover wood and sidings when my husband and I built the tree/shrub house. I just bought red potatoes from the supermarket. They are organic potatoes. Good luck gardening! It’s therapeutic and productive.

Great harvest! Can you tell me what you amended your soil with or how you fed the plants?
@myebackyardgardennhabitat4732 жыл бұрын
Hello’s there. Thank you for your question. My potato box has thriving red wigglers composting worms. I overwinter them with scrap food (burried about 6 inches) in 4 locations and leaves mulch on top as brown materials for their food and insulation, too. They help amend the soil for me. Red wigglers self regulate so they don’t overcrowded my potato box. But I cannot use sharp materials to harvest my potatoes. I have to use my hands so I won’t hurt my composting worms.
@MissBetsyLu Жыл бұрын
Harvest on cold days and worms will go deeper into ground. Cut off tops early and let sit uncovered so top is c older. I think your impatience to harvest cost a lot of bulk in the harvest.

I think your soil was to compact. You needed much looser soil.
@myebackyardgardennhabitat4732 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. The soil I used is 50-50 sand and top soil. The soil looks compact but it is not. As you can see I don’t have to use shovel to dig potatoes.
@krenee22662 жыл бұрын
@@myebackyardgardennhabitat473 Hey there I see you didn't have to dig but top soil can still be heavy and will compact over time when it settles which it will, after the several months of the growing season & the extra weightbeing added over time of more soil & water. But obviously will loosen back up once you move through it at dig time. What I meant was it was to compact for growing in. Remember that's what each potato has to live & grow inside. Maybe you could try a larger amount of compost instead of topsoil? I've just had better luck with as loose a soil as possible. I hope you find something that works better for you either way. Happy Gardening!

Mas mainam na natural or organic fertilizer.
