Nanaki is like someone who isn't comfortable hugging people. Like me. I'm comfortable with family and very close friends but casual friends and acquaintances not so much. The villagers are Nanakis family. It's only natural he shows a side to them that he hasn't with the others yet.

He's around 50 during the game, but in the after credits 500 years later he looks mostly the same with only some gray. Based on that, his species could probably hit 1000+ easily so he couldn't be a teenager based on age.

On any other occasion, I would think Red's true voice is jarring. But one, it's important to remember that he's a teenager by his species' standards. And two, Max Mittelman is super awesome and talented.

This reminds me of when I met some wolves (well, as genetically close to wolves as was legally permissible for the public to mingle with them) and unlike dogs they had very distinct adult and child behaviours. Real-life dogs had the ability to grow a full-size brain bred out of them, which is why they constantly behave like children. Getting to see Red play both makes a lot more sense to me after learning that. There's always been dispute over whether Red was canine, feline, or a deliberately ambiguous mix of both. There's no doubt in my mind now though; he's a wolf.

and hence another reason the Og ff7 should have had voice acting in it! i had no idea that nanaki canonically spoke with two different tone of voices and that his true voice isn't really how you would expect him to sound! i mean the first crash bandicoot came out a year before final fantasy Vll did an the former had voice over, why couldn't the latter?

well for one crash has like, 10 mins tops of voice acting. whereas ff7 would have had to have several hours of it. and audio takes up a lot of space, now imagine trying to fit in all that onto a game that was already on 3 discs. completely unfeasible.

This is intended though. In the original FF7 they wanted him to have a younger voice once he stopped acting older and mature after this point. However, due to no voice acting in the original FF7, they had to compensate for that by giving him a country accent in the JP version of the original FF7. The original FF7 English version did not give him the country accent to reflect him now having a younger voice and actually a teenager by his species age due to rush translation.

@@goddamnarshia I get it you are not expecting this like many others who only played the English version of the original FF7 and did not know Red is meant to sound like a teenager at this point in the storyline due to faulty english translation when they were working getting FF7 to ENG version. It is one of the original aspect of the game they actually failed to add into the original FF7 for english version not intentionally but as a result of bad translation due to development side of getting the original FF7 from JP version to ENG version. If they had translated Red's dialogue right then he would have had a country accent in his dialogue to reflect he is speaking as a teenager voice after this point in the storyline. As i said already, this is a aspect the original developers wanted since back then they worked on the original FF7 they wanted to show Red using a teenager voice after this point in the storyline but could not do it properly during that time due to no voice actors so they compensated it with a slight change in his dialogue by adding a country accent. Since now they have voice actors, they went with the original plan to just give him a young teenager voice as originally planned instead.

yeah he's a teenager. but in the original you didnt have voice acting and got to this part of the game in like 15 hours. we've spent like 50 hours with red now getting to know him and developing his personality. his new voice has just completely thrown him off for me tbh, and its just waved away with barely any reaction. it was okay like that in the og, but it felt super bizarre in rebirth imo.

in the OG FF7 (as in japanese script) Red XIII changed the way he talked as shown through speech pattern differences, revealing he was basically a teen only acting like a sagely man. That kind of language quirk was not easily translatable, so it was lost in translation for overseas release. Since the remake has voice acting, they took advantage of that with a voice change too.

People complaining about this fail to realize this was in the OG Japanese FF7. Up until Cosmo Canyon, Red used very formal and old mannish pronouns when referring to himself, and used more childish ones when his true age was revealed. This was lost in the English translation since English only has one pronoun for oneself ..'I', where Japanese has multiple

Any decent writer could just have him be more emotional, excitable, open, naive etc to contrast his prior stoic persona. This isnt organic character growth, this is lazy. It would be similarly idiotic if Cloud midway through his (intentionally similar) character arc started talking like Sora + 4 octaves higher. You can show that growth in intelligent natural ways-- the change here is WAY too jarring.
