@Channel07 You're right. Windows helped a lot to make the PC world a standard, and helped a lot to make Intel and AMD architectures popular to the desktop users. Without Windows, there would be only techies and advanced computer users who would be able to use it, and maybe a big architecture disparity. Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOOOVE LINUX. But we just can't ignore how Windows has mold the market and, in a very uncommon way, actually helped Linux Kernel to not go on a dead road. Without Windows, someone else could have done their work, but not for sure. Apple was definitely too close as a desktop system to help users do what they want with a computer.
@ReinaertVandeCruys19 жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, KDE, the desktop environment used in this video, by itself already looks very OSX-like, and it requires little tweaking to make it look even more similar. The K in front of the name of many applications is also KDE"s doing, a complete KDE installation ships with programs like KMail, KOrganizer, Kontact and so on. So, as far as the interface is concerned, this is nearly an out-of-the-box KDE installation, not much tweaking by North-Korea going on here.

+Reinaert Van de Cruys Thank you, I came here to say almost exactly that.

+Reinaert Van de Cruys yeah, and they couldn't just "copy over" OS X programmes. On another note, have you seen that programme, KFinder, anywhere else? I wonder if it's exclusive to this OS o.o which would be interesting!
@ReinaertVandeCruys18 жыл бұрын
+archlinuxrussian Good point, I hadn't noticed that. I'm guessing they just took KDE's kFind and renamed it to kFinder to more closely match OSX's Finder, but I can't tell, because he doesn't seem to actually open kFinder in this or in the next video.
@GioGziro957 жыл бұрын
KDE Plasma looks more like Windows out of the box. I am a Plasma 5 user and I can safely say that this shit is heavily tweaked. The applications in the video look almost completely different. I don't only mean the theming - I mean everything. And I know that it's a very old version of the desktop, but still - KDE 3 didn't look like that. KDE's calendar app is called KOrganizer, not kCal and it looks completely different. Also, I've never heard of an app called KFinder; KDE's default file manager is Dolphin nowadays and it used to be Konqueror in the 3.x era; it has never been KFinder. The most of the stuff in the OS looks like software that is either written in DPRK from scratch or forked from other open-source projects. The first "k"s in the app names probably stand for Korea; they might have been inspired by Apple's "i"-things and KDE's "K"-things as well, but I'm pretty sure, the motivation behind it wasn't from either of the last two. I'm kind of surprised that they've made that close rip-off of macOS, though.

+RealPlayerCraft This guy in the video has very little knowledge of what KDE is and it's applications. KDE has nothing to do with korea, it was originally made as a way to standardize linux apps for it's desktop, the same way windows provides it's standard uniform of windows for each application or the way mac does. Apps were written to have their own subsystem of app control in whatever desktop environment the linux OS was running that the user had. However KDE apps do have the K in front of the names. The designers liked this idea and followed suit, even tho they don't have any care for name copyright violations. However to them, they clearly view the K as korean. Rather than following suit of KDE's general conventional nomenclature. I can only speculate on the file manager they used, whether they took konqueror or used the popular dolphin code base. I know most people aren't familiar with KDE, but they have had some far reaching work even amongst apple and windows people. They developed a browser known as konqueuer. They had developed and provided an opensource engine for its browser they released known as webkit. Webkit has had some major success. It was originally worked on, but branched off by a very secretive company that was very hard to work with. If you knew how bad they are with disclosures and secretive work in coding and being unwilling to provide information to their coding back to the webkit project, you'd swear they were a korean company. However they go by the name of apple. They use a forked version of the webkit code to run their browser known as safari, even for their cellphones. Google uses a forked version as well when apple split to run their chrome web browser. Even android devices tend to run webkit for non chrome browsers. Steam runs webkit as well for its web browser. All that aside, I was surprised by some of his remarks on how they got the install and everything to look like mac os, like it was a hard feat for them to copy or steal. The linux community has long since made and provided mac os looking themes to their desktop. Most likely none of this was actual work done by the developers in recreating a dock or the theme. Maybe just the wallpapers and logo's and changing some of the wording and names. You will find things such as cursors for even windows that have the mac look them if you search the internet. Linux communities generally refer to any of the desktop themes that look like mac as cupertino. I have never cared to copy a dock or use mac based themes for windows or linux. I'm surprised that later he said the OS was based off of Fedora, yet he was earlier claiming it was unix like and chose other from the list in vmware. Fedora is listed. Unlike which file manager they used, the word program they used is based off of openoffice code from just looking at it, you notice as he accidentally hit saves, it tries to use odf. Which is open document format. However the developers did put in some interesting tamper proof precautions into the OS that make it reboot and some things that watermark documents and even add water markings to anything on USB sticks. So they aren't completely ameture programmers over there. However it does appear they just rebranded as much as they could from KDE. Still, I can only imagine how far behind they are on Red Star OS. Fedora has switched from KDE to gnome awhile back. Which is odd, gnome and unbuntu's unity(which is based on gnome), resemble mac os way much more. Besides that everything in gnome tends to look much better, which again, more like apple's desktop. Which makes me think the desktop is much older and based on old technology. As I wouldn't imagine they were taking fedora's main code and sticking kde back onto it. They probably set to work on a much older version and decided that it was too much work to keep up and import their code to newer versions.

This is Linux. Linux isn't specific to any desktop environment so Unity has the managers on the right, while KDE has it on the left. The thing is, is that this looks more like XFCE, because KDE doesn't have docks and such, it has a windows-like interface. But it says KFinder, which is the Start Menu for KDE (KDE is an open-sourced company like GNOME that releases software, and their gimmick is that everything has a "K" in it, and no, it's not for Korea, they just like *K*onsoles), also, most of the Ks aren't even a part of it. Nothing is copied from Apple here .... it's a customized Linux distribution with KDE desktop ... KDE applications typically begin with K. Nearly all the applications shown in this video have been around for ages. I would be interested in the under the hood modifications N Korea put into the OS.
@MichaelMJD9 жыл бұрын
+David Cunningham The interface as a whole looks very much like Apple's OS X. Most of the applications I showed in the video look very similar to the Apple applications on OS X. I don't believe that KDE calls the applications sown in this video by the same name. For example, the calendar is just called "Calendar" . While KDE may use the 'k' prefix in some applications, it is obvious that the DPRK took a lot of inspiration from OS X when making this operating system.

JUCHE is the North Korean way of measuring time, adopted as a state policy. Juche year ONE is the birth year of the first "Beloved Leader", Kim IL-sung, who was the grandfather of the current "Beloved Leader". Kim IL-sung was born in 1912, which became year one in the Juche Calendar. So, right now, in 2020, we are in the year Juche 109.

I though the map at the time zone set up was really interesting. It probably confused you because we, westerners, are used to looking at a map which makes the west, especially North America, seem more prominent. Its interesting how that sort of image can affect one's thinking. I wonder what kind of maps they use in other eastern countries... I know its all just perspective, but its interesting to think about.
@MichaelMJD8 жыл бұрын
+Jakob Geiger Yeah that's exactly why it threw me off haha. Other countries just have maps from different perspectives, and I obviously was not thinking this when making this video.

In Asian world speaking the language and reading it is not the same thing. A lot of Chinese people can't read their language, but they still can read latin alphabet. Citizens of Japan and South Corea can read, because they are very dense and they mostly work for big companies which require papers and all that stuff. Since we don't have so much information about North Corea - I would assume, they are more like Chinese people: only government and people who work with papers and computers can read well, since the country is agricultural.
@gurriato8 жыл бұрын
Unlike Chinese and Japanese, learning to read and write Korean is really simple. Unlike English and the Latin alphabet, Hangul fits the Korean language perfectly because it was designed from the ground up as a new national alphabet. So there's no reason for a Korean citizen to use romanizations.

Although Mac OSX as a whole, is an Apple Proprietary System, it is in fact a Linux/Unix derivative, the whole of which is open source, meaning anybody can use it and modify it to their liking, than turn around and give it away for free or sell it. This also includes the ability to create something proprietary out of it, which is in fact exactly what Apple did, and ultimately what North Korea did with this Red Star OS. And it is not American made software, as you claim, the Linux Kernel was patented as free software by Linus Torvalds, a Finnish student, back in 1991. Basically, as long as you don't use the exact same source code as Apple did in OSX, you are not infringing on any copyrights whatsoever.

Super late, and has probably already been mentioned, but the CHM viewer is presumably there for reading Compiled HtMl help files from any older Windows apps you run via WINE - the format was introduced in Win 95 OSR 2.5/NT4.0 and lasted through to the mid 2000s before being gradually replaced. (The usual Windows icon is a sort of maroon book with a big yellow question mark on the cover.)
