Lived in Brooklyn and queens my whole life. Didn’t see one of these until a few years ago here

They’ve definitely been increasing in population over the years! I’m sure one flew overhead, you just didn’t notice 😊

They don’t do well here in the city. Me as a hawk watcher I’ve lost so many resident hawks that I was connected to personally. Rat poison and trichomoniasis are killing them. I’ve lost so many special hawks in the past that I haven’t forgotten. Every time when one dies it’s either rat poison or trichomoniasis. I saw the Terrence Cardinal Cooke nest in this video and the female from that nest died last year. They don’t live that long in the city because of rodenticide and trichomoniasis. So sad 😞😢

Thank you for sharing your story. Its stories like this that allowed us to push for the permanent ban of rodenticides in NYC parks, which was achieved last year! We also had a record number of nesting pairs in 2021. It’s a little unfair to say they don’t do we’ll here-they’re supremely adapted for urban life. It’s US that needs to change!

@@WildNewYork I know it’s unfair to say but I’m just going by what I see in the city. This is something I don’t want to say, but they go through too much in the city. There was another nest not far Terrence Cardinal Cooke in a tree near the loch. The female from that nest also died from trichomoniasis. Both females died from the same disease last year. Pale Male is the only hawk that made it to 30 years in the wild.

We’ve still got a long way to go in our conservation efforts, but the little we’ve done so far has already drawn more and more birds back to the city. Hopefully they inspire our citizens to take on more conservation efforts!

are you sure that it is trichomoniasis? According to Wikipedia "The human genital tract is the only reservoir for this species. Trichomonas is transmitted through sexual or genital contact... Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) which is most often spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex.[1] It can also spread through genital touching (manual sex)."
