It really breaks my heart thinking about Wendy. She’s perfect as she is, RV’s backbone- best vocalist, arguably their best rapper, a great dancer, and her visuals are beyond average. But with her confidence and self esteem she really struggles to project the best of her. I blame SM for wasting her potential and failing to protect her from all the abuse she gets online as well as their stylists/designers whoever is responsible for dressing her up like that and forcing those bangs 24/7 (not that she looks bad with them but it’s good to change it up every now and then.) She’s been through a lot and people won’t stop labelling her as "skin and bones” which is an absolute exaggeration. Then of course, there’s the racist thing... although it’s been a year since and I’m certain she had no say in doing the impression and SM being SM did nothing to stop the hate let alone let her apologise for upsetting anyone.

I'm black and from America and wasn't offended in the least neither time. I have a similar personality and have done similar when hanging with my friends. I guess when you interact with other cultures you pick up things and can joke around and not worry about being called a racist. That being said, I still say it wasn't just black fans upset. It was also the haters trying to drag her down. Wendy's arguably one of the best vocals in kpop. When you're good at something and at the top, there's always someone trying to knock you down!

All of these people bringing up "This is what happens when you don't apologize", you do know that a lot of entertainment companies don't allow there idols to apologize? Unless it's a controversy effecting their stockmarket or something massive. This kind of topic isn't as big in Korea as it is in the rest of the world. That is the truth. And she was ignorant, but in no way racist. A lot of idols before her have gotten into controversies for following directions. Tzuyu from twice for example, she got a lot of backlash from waving the taiwanese flag at a talk show. Someone in the satff gave her the flag and told her to use it. But this brought in the government in both China and Taiwan and all the disputes regarding Taiwans independence and so on. But Tzuyu got the blame. Wendy was asked to do stereotypes. She did. Many idols have talked about stuff they felt forced to do or just had to do in general in their more active years. They don't have much freedom. Every picture they post will go through someone (probably) and they can get into trouble for swearing in a live recording. If she had refused to do the stereotype, she would get backlash from her company, and from the program. Maybe even from the general public in Korea for being a difficult coworker for other people in the business. She might have wanted to apologize, but she wasn't allowed to, was what I was getting at. Taeyeon from SNSD apologized to fans directly at an airport after one of her controversies. They live such restrictive lives, and they have their faults. A lot of what they do is documented and I'm sure we all have done some questionable stuff that no one will know of because of the simple reason that no one have heard of it. Throwing around the word Racist so much makes it lose its meaning. Being racist is thinking a "race" is less worth than another. Using a stereotype doesn't prove she thinks black people are less worthy than her, what she did was wrong, but it was far from racist. It was ignorant. If you read my block of text, good for you. If I misspelled anything I do apologize, and this is after all just my opinion. Can't we have a discussion were we can listen more to each other and try to understand other peoples perspective and their cultures?
@atbroyalty91225 жыл бұрын
Also, I saw a few people saying that she never mentioned race, and if she didn't and people are just assuming she did because that's how they (not Wendy) perceive a certain group, so wouldn't that make them the racist or ignorant ones? I've seen people trying to claim that she had done it again for the third time just because she was wearing those sunglasses and trying to act cool while saying "Yo, man, what's up" with swag. Like, race wasn't mention and she was honestly just acting like her usual dorky self because she was acting cool. And girl's daily language is "Yo, man" like how some people would say "Hey bro" and more. That video was taken out of context by a fangirl of another group and it created more problems, but it made her seem ignorant herself because she was planting the seeds on trying to make Wendy out to be someone she's not. Also, the anti-fan assumed that only blacks acted like that, so it made her seem very ignorant because I'm from a very diverse suburban city and I've been around people of various races and ethnicities that act kind of like Wendy and some even acts ghetto if that's the right term. I even work with people who use "man" instead of "dude," "bro," "girl," and so on.

Wendy is literally the most skilled and talented vocalist of the 3rd generation. What does it matter what her body looks like? Her voice earns her the spot in Red Velvet by itself. There would be no Red Velvet without Wendy. She carries the group so much vocally and the reason they can do all those crazy things in their songs is because Wendy can support it. Every member of Red Velvet is talented, pretty and deserving of respect and adoration. Remember ignorance does not equal hate and people can always learn and reflect.

Thanks for the making the video and I hope it sheds a better light on her. Also, I think something you forgot to mention or perhaps you’re not aware of is Wendy rarely goes home and shes just met up with her family for the first time in 8 years. Her parents had come to visit her once for their first tour in 2017 but after that she hasn’t spoken about them much and you can really tell it takes a toll on her as much as the vocal cords issue. I’ve only recently really gotten into red velvet and before that I was a casual listener and I watched a lot of their videos but Wendy was always that one member to catch my eye and literally captivated my heart. She’s been getting a lot of positive attention these days and I hope she pulls a "Joy" soon, accepts herself as she is with the flaws and ends us all with her personal charm. She’s an amazing person really, and I hope the fandom continues to grow and support her even more.

What Wendy did wasn't appropriate but racist?? lmao please, calling every little thing racist devalues conversations about real racism that hurts people all over the world. Why are y'all hating on some girl that wasn't thinking about what she was saying and how it might offend people when there's actual discrimination going on to all races pretty much everywhere? We clearly need to get our priorities straight. Wendy should have been corrected and that should be the end of it. People aren't either saints or racists and plenty make mistakes, criticism is fine but outright wishing physical harm on her is messed up. edit: also I find it weird that ppl call her out for not apologising? She's managed by a company that puts her on diets that are clearly unhealthy, you guys really think they're gonna let her speak her mind about this? I feel like ppl in the west need to understand that the idol culture surrounding dieting is very toxic. Idols will be asked about their weight constantly and it's seen as less of a big deal/taboo to go on an extreme diet before a comeback than it would be in the west. This is why it might come off as insensitive or ignorant when Wendy talks about starving herself on tv or radio. The reality is she's under a lot of pressure to be thin in a culture that congratulates idols for losing weight quickly and her management doesn't help. We really shouldn't be so harsh on her because she's a product of the environment she lives in; who we really need to criticise is her management.

I honestly can't think of any time when SM has issued an apology for anything. Not even when Kangin was drunk driving unless it was for causing 'distress'. Honestly I kinda feel like SM uses gaslighting tactics when making statements. There's no way that they would let Wendy apologise in their normal style because that would require a lengthy statement.

@@saybah2585 Henry and Wendy have very different positions within SM, just because he was able to make a statement doesn't mean she can. Additionally, girl group reputations are probably one of if not the most fragile in the k-pop industry and Wendy doesn't have a large western fan base comparatively to other artists so it makes perfect sense to me that the company would want to let the whole thing blow over. They want their group to get popular in Europe/the US and an apology could stir things up more. Obviously I can't say for sure but we can't use Henry as an example to further accuse Wendy since circumstances are different.

I hope Wendy continues to be healthier and find a nice balance for her and her fans. In my personal opinion, mental health has to contribute to life to and the fans can help her with that. Getting criticism like that is not good for her mental health and will make her continue to have bad thoughts about herself. I do think being racist was her fault, but it wasn’t entirely her fault, after all, the hosts did ask her to imitate her classmates. I understand how many people felt offended after her imitation, but you have to admit we’ve all been racist at least once in our lives. Wendy honestly does not deserve hate and neither does anyone else, idols are human too and they should be able to live like us, no boundaries, but idols are seen as perfect and should be role models. I hope Wendy continues to grow and learn to love herself. ❤️

She got constant shit from international fans, once again body-shamed just for existing. No wonder she began yoyo-dieting under that constant pressure. (Do people really hate Wendy because of the controversy or do they use that reason to hate her because they actually just don't like her in general and want to ruin her and RV or is it both or is it because by mentioning her in their comments and posts, they know they will receive attention from both sides of the spectrum, in which there are people who either hates her or loves her?) I have also noticed that there are people who claim that they don't like Wendy (some don't even know her or how she looks like and some only knows how she looks like but don't know who RV is) and they irritate me because they're usually always saying "I would stan RV if Wendy wasn't in it" but you already know that they weren't going to stan RV in the first place because they only talk about RV if it's about a scandel or Wendy, and some only knows how Wendy looks like, but don't even know how Irene, Seulgi, Joy, and Yeri looks like.... Furthermore, I noticed that one reason people use as an explanation to continue to hate on Wendy when her fans come to defend her is by saying that she should of known better because she studied and lived abroad in the USA and Canada compared to an idol who has never studied or lived in another country outside of S.Korea. I don't want to assume this is why she continues to get hates and threats repeatedly over and over, but seeing not many people do the same to idols who has done worse than her because they've only lived in Korea and are assumed to know nothing about social issues outside of Korea is really ironic because I'm an I-Reveluv and there still are peope here who are born, raised, or is/had studied in the USA that is not educated about race even though it's 2019... In conclusion, I think people are really selective when it comes to who's cancelled or who deserves the most hates and I think we as a society have a hard time identifying between racism and ignorance and coming into agreement of who is really racist or ignorant. Also, if you hate her then that's fine because it's your right to do and think however way you want, but it's the same for fans who are sticking with Wendy and giving her their love and support.

A lot of westerners LOVE to put themselves on a high horse by condemning Knetz for being so hateful but lack the self-awareness to realize how disgusting so many of them can be as well. Pay attention to people's strong reactions to things because more often than not, it's a projection of some form. It's true when they say that what a person says of another (and/or how they say it) speaks so much more about them than the person they're talking about. I can't take any of this hate bandwagoning culture on social media seriously, man. But, of course, it's always easier to focus on others and attack them than to actually focus on yourself and self-improvement. That would require too much self-awareness for most. I really hope emotional intelligence becomes a bigger priority in the future cause society so desperately needs it.
