A true Munson last would probably be ideal for your feet. Failing that you are a very good candidate for Oak Street Bootmaker’s Elston last. That said thank you for the video. It makes me glad I never purchased a EE width Iron Ranger. I am a D width when standing but a C in terms of overall volume. Instead I have to use Kilties or insoles to help take up volume. The PNW Bootmakers are really my only way to try dial in size though. A Munson was my ideal fit but post 2012 they have all but dried up. The old Red Wing 899 would have been a much better fit for you! Too bad they discontinued it. The old last 8 was a 3 point last. When the heritage boots came out the last was instead narrowed and made sleeker, it is now a 2 point last. Ironically still called the last 8. The Red Wing bump toe Munson (true last 8)was last used in the 899 or the older farm boots that were discontinued. Listening to lots of podcasts and interviews really helped me understand that, Full Grain Podcast and Stitchdown are excellent resources.

@@bootsjeansandtheoddwatch I'm glad that I could help! For more info Stitchdown Podcast recently did an interview with the head of the heritage division. I highly recommend it! Oak Street was interviewed on Full Grain Podcast too The Elston last I recommended is a Navy Boondocker (WWII last) But modified to be a EE in the forefront. It fits TTS most people. Some guys wearing CXL can get a half size down to work. For me though I had to go with my HTB measurements rather than HTT as a result. I wear a 12D Elston last and I wear an 11.5D Iron Ranger as an example. An 11.5D in the Elston is just too short! I am not someone who believes in stretch to fit. If the boot doesn't fit from the beginning it almost never fits. But Oak Street themselves has a sizing guide. If you listen to his interview with the Full Grain Podcast he explains the sizing and why they recommend the size they do in each of their lasts.

iron rangers and 875 moc toes are my favorite red wings. in fact red wing is probably my favorite boot brand and ive tried them all. for the money they are just very solid. i do have to wear an EE as well so unfortunately sometimes your options are limited especially with the moc toes but this may be a viable option for something that you've just gotta have but isnt quite wide enough. the opening around the collar on an iron ranger EE is definitely a beast even as a large fellow.

Thank you for this video. I have the exact same problem with Red Wing Iron Rangers. The EE is perfect for the ball of my feet but feels loose around the heel. The D is perfect around my ankle but tight around the ball of my feet. Going 1/2 a size up fixes both issues, but then the boot is too long. Which was a better fit for you, the stretched D or the EE?

The EE is better than the stretched D but it’s got the loose ankle/shaft…the heel isn’t too bad with this last. Recently got the Thursday Hero in wide width and mammamia they fit perfectly! I think I’ve got a video up on them too

Really useful video. For comparison I measured my 9D 3343's (still No. 8 last) and they were 12.125" long. Not exactly sure if we measured the same way, but even so I think that could mean the 8.5EE and 9D lasts are very close in length, and 8.5EE may actually be a bit longer. Thanks for posting.

No issues walking on the welt with the iron rangers but my moc toes I’m definitely walking on the welt. The moc toes weren’t stretched by a cobbler though, just through lots of wear…not sure if that made a difference or not. Thanks for checking out the video!

I dont have wide feet but getting into boots for the first time was an iron ranger and for some reason opted for a double EE width and one full size down. Normally a 10.5D on brannock but opted for a 9.5EE. In hindsight should have gone with the 9.5D. I can still wear the boots but I'm pretty sure fit is off and could be more comfortable. Ended up buying 2 more pairs of iron rangers in the same size too and now I have 3 boots that could probably fit a tad better. Not that they are uncomfortable or anything. Just what I've learned from wearing boots over the last 2 years.

Traditional shoemaker nomenclature is add 1/8 inch length per half size, so a full size increase of 1 is a 1/4inch. fwiw.

This is what happens to me! Wides are too loose in the ankle but perfect everywhere else. D's are perfect in the ankle but tight everywhere else. My foot spills over the welt in iron ranger 10s but the 9.5EE is way too wide in the ankle. I have found that going up a whole size in D is about my only option with some boots. With other boots, I just have to skip them entirely. I don't seem to have this issue with shoes. Wide sizes fit fine. Maybe due to the material used.

Very informative! thank you for this. I have wide feet and high instep. I measure an 8.5 but have to use a 9d for Iron Rangers to make up for the width. Will consider 8.5e for next purchase!

I am very glad I found this video as I have been struggling with sizing on Iron Rangers and the Mocs. I went to my local store and measured out to 11.7E Left Foot and 11 EE on my right foot. When trying on Iron Rangers and Mocs, I could go with the 11.5 D or 11 EE in either. IRs in D felt pretty good overall but It felt like the cap toe area was putting pressure down on my toes from above, didn't seem like enough space. EE was great in the width but my heels were loose unless I tied them snug across the top eyelets. My thought is the 11 EE is better but I would be worried they might stretch too much after the break in? In the mocs 11.5D , felt good except it was snug across the width of the boot. the ball of my foot was being crushed a bit. 11 EE width was great but it felt as though I had too much volume, especially in the smaller foot and my heels were slipping unless I tied them snug across the top eyelets. My thought is that the D width is better but I would be concerned the width wouldn't stretch enough. Any thoughts from your perspective? How do you size your mocs?

I’ve never come across a EE moc to try on but I go true to size (9 for me) in standard width and the fit is ok…not great but ok. I’d love to try on mocs in EE! For the Rangers you may have some luck going standard width and having a cobbler stretch the width in the forefoot so the heel stays locked in. Thanks for watching!

For sure, many times and always come out a 9E/EE…usually 8.5ee in boots/dress shoes works best but 9D can work out ok often too

Ya D is too narrow for me at 8.5. Having them stretched was kind of a bandaid solution but the 8.5EE is the way to go for me!

I'm not sure how true this is but supposedly RW's EE offerings are only EE from the forefoot/vamp. For me, this makes sense as the heels in all the EE IR's I've tried were way too narrow.

Could very well be true, because often EE lasts are too big in the heel for me and this feels good!
