My daughter and I really love this channel. She’s obsessed with shoes and her number one idea of daddy daughter time during the quarantine is to watch “The man that cuts the shoe”. She’s 4, and is mind blown at each and every cut shoe reveal. I really love the leather and construction commentary, as a life long wearer if work boots. Keep up the good work.

Redwing reached out to clarify a few things, here is what they said about the 270 welt. “3/4 welts can be re-heeled without removing the whole sole. Also called Nail-seat construction. Check out the 11 holes in the heel. Each one gets a nail (or two). If you look inside the boot, you’ll see a piece of leather (Veg tan insole/heel) covering those nails.”

@@scarea2691 How would they do that? I have a bit of affinity for those types of boots, an old friend who is no longer with us gave me a pair of his old army style boots (think Vietnam war era type boots) I was wearing them while checking out an old house with a relative who was thinking of buying and rebuilding it, at the time I didn't realize it but I caught a nail in the sole of the boots. It was a while later and I noticed every time I was walking in them something sharp was just barely hitting the bottom of my foot, I thought I had a rock in my boot, shook the boot, nothing fell out, put them back on and in a few steps the sensation was back, stuck my hand down in the boot and felt something, but wasn't sure what it was, turned it over and a naill was pushed into the sole of the boot and was just barely hitting the bottom of my foot. Had I been wearing anything lesser that was a nail through my foot, every since I have preferred a nice meaty boot.

@@Jontech777I have pair around a year now, think they look great, comfortable ON the foot, kills your legs quick though, walking on pavement zero shock absorption. Horrible in the heat, sweat like a pig, freeze in the cold, soaking wet in the rain, slippery on quite literally anything wet and wearing them in winter is basically gambling the durability of your bones every step. Make your legs crazy sore way to fast, useless in loose ground like sand, slippery on grass if you have to go downhill, uncomfortable on everything but dry dirt pretty much. I will be getting heavy lugs on them come next spring so they are not completely useless and be comfortable / safe enough for yard work etc. Unless you want a boot that isn't very nice looking for the office or a boot to walk through flat DRY grassy areas in the fall, they are pretty fucking useless.

The heel counter is actually a material called Robus which is ground leather mixed with resin rather than fibre board. Much better than leather in my opinion because it allows it to be formed and it will hold its shape much longer. Leather counters will eventually get soft from perspiration and will soften over time.

I got a pair of Red Wing steel toe for college graduation (construction management major). I finally got to use them about 3 years later when I took a field assignment. I wore those boots daily for 2 and a half years. They're painful to break in, but once you do they get comfortable and last a long time. I'm back in the office now, but when I need to wear those boots, they're still amazing nearly 8 years later.

I bought a pair of these like 7 years ago with the old cork sole. A friend of my grandfather was a bootmaker in his early days and when he saw them he had nothing but positive things to say. Went on and on just looking at them saying how well made they were and how they'll last a lifetime. He pointed out all the things you said in the beginning. I've been very happy with them, and I prefer the old sole to the vibram mostly for the classic look and feel to it.

Because Iron Rangers do not have a synthetic tongue or cuff, they were ideal for when we used to burn the stubble and the oiled leather withstood the heat and flames for hours. Guys were always amazed when the bottom of my Levi's caught alight that I could put them out by just rubbing them against the other leg of my jeans with my boots. To me, using synthetics in work boots is crazy. I wonder if the people who design a lot of the boots ever wear them for any form of rough work. Would you expect your work boots to be reasonably fireproof.?

My Mountain Lights are roughly 15 years old and have been rebuilt by Danner twice. They are heavy, strong and very comfortable when hiking. Since they have been rebuilt twice and there is not quite enough leather left to do a proper resole, so I too am shopping for another pair. And the only thing light about the Mountain Lights is the name. There are a few places that have them on sale for $200 to $250. Probably new old stock or returns. I also wore Red Wing 2233's for 30+ years for work. This was not one pair but about 10 pair, I took very good care of them too, so each pair would last for several years. After I retired, I gave St. Vinnies 7 pair and kept the newest for me. I would always add a pair of sorbathane (sp?) insoles just because.

My iron rangers are 16 months old and still going strong. No bad break ins either. The sole has moulded to my feet for a real custom fit. The patina they acquire over time is beautiful! A lot of people say the break in period is hard. I found that if you wear them in the house for a few hours a day for a week then go for some shorts walks outside the following week then you will be good to go. Get the Redwing oil cream for keeping them in shape every few months just to keep the leather hydrated and you will perfect!

They are now hurting my left heal and the leather is starting to crack. Time for a new pair! I wore these boots everyday walking 3 to 5 mile on concrete. I will say they hurt like hell until broken in which took two weeks or more. But after they break in they are gold!

These are great boots. They are not great work boots. They do not have a safety toe, they have no cushion, they are a natural leather so you must let them dry if saturated with water. A shoe tree is important. I wear them as a construction inspector, but if actually did labor i wouldn't pick these.

I purchased my Red Wing Iron Ranger in 2010 because it was recommended by some friends, and because it is American-made and I wanted to support American labor. At the time (I've since retired) I was serving as a U.S. Army Special Forces company commander on deployment. Because we were deployed and have the opportunity to use a variety of kit, I took my Iron Rangers with me and used them in all kinds of environments, to include three airborne operations with our host-nation special operations partner unit. The boot's performance was excellent and did not disappoint. Of course, I had given it a month to break-in. For jumping, I had to tape the top of the boot because the steel lace hooks there can easily get caught up on the parachute guide lines during the opening shock of the parachute (which could be bad). Other than that, these boots are combat and training approved as far as I was able to put them through the ringer.

That's a nice looking boot!! I live 30 min from Red Wing, MN. My only memory or red wings was as a kid. We had red wing shoe stores in a lot of the small towns I grew up in Wisconsin. Anyways one day as a kid my shoes were junk and the school told my dad I needed new ones and so he brought some new redwings. I looked at them things and felt embarrassed that I didn't get something like Nikes. I was pissed and think I got upset with him. Now looking back he probably actually spent something on them, one thing you must know about this situation was I grew up poor. Now that I look back on this moment I feel bad I acted that way I was probably 8 or so, he died when I was 20. I would love to own a pair of redwings now as an adult; their construction is amazing. Another thing my uncle worked for Weinbrenner in Marshfield his entire life retired 5 years ago and got quite the retirement package. I love this channel love the sound of the letter being cut. Wow did that boot come apart hard that band saw struggled!!

I also have another pair of Moc Toe from RedWings and they are also amazing, even after being resoled. Both these shoes are a bit pricy, but they last ten times longer than these craps you can buy made in china. I point out that we have in France several brands that make very high quality shoes, eg. paraboot, Le soulor, la botte gardiane..., and they can be very pricy as well, even more sometimes than a pair of redwings. I think one of the biggest aspects of true leather is that natural look, so I really enjoy that. I've been impressed by the Red Wing "experience". I got the Burnside Boot for work. I've actually only needed to wear them a handful of times, because it was a rule you had to wear them in the shop. I was working in an office, at that time. The boots are very comfortable, and light, since they have a composite toe. The salesman told me I can bring them in once per month for cleaning and conditioning. I'm pretty sure they weren't charging for that, at the time. They just seem very well made, and, yes, although I've never been strict about the "MITUSA", as you refer to it, I did really like that they were made in America. Sure, you pay a premium for that, but they seem to be, totally, a case of getting what you pay for. In short, great boots, great company. 👍
