Ive owned this camera for a month now. I could agree that the AF, although works fine for stills may not always track video subjects properly. As for the tele end of the zoom, I did tripod tests against my full frame SLR with the kit Canon lens. The differences were noticeable in center of frame and edge, but not dramatically so, given the hugely larger sensor, double the pixels, and system price. I am happy with the tele performance and would suggest the reviewers criticism may relate to camera movement in his tests.

Capacitive touch screens do not work under water. That is why the camera doesn't have that feature.

@@Red35Photography True, but then they'd need to put buttons to control the same things, which would result in a doubling up of the controls. I think they figured that just use the controls which allow it to be operated underwater and leave out the touch screen as a cost saving measure.

Good point about the locking accessory ring. My TG-4 does not have it, and it has fallen off a few times. I even lost one, at a cost of about $10. Oh, I see the TG-5 has the same cheap plastic buckle for the hand strap. I was walking one day and the buckle broke, and down went the camera, bouncing on the ground. Luckily it was a "tough camera" , so no damage. But you would think for a $400 camera, Olympus would make a better hand strap/buckle!

I hear you my friend, wouldn't it be great but it may also bring the price very close if not more than the brilliant RX100V! Imagine a RX100V that's rugged. I can see that Sony would charge double the money for one. Also size may be bigger as they need more cushion inside for the drop-proof-ness. So it won't be as compact as now nor the size of RX100V. It will be quite a bit bigger. But hopefully, one day we will see one!

Thinking out loud...I am considering this camera and I like that your review comes from beating on it and I like you did it in Cuba. I’m ok with no touch screen, it doesn’t help when snorkeling or diving or just moving fast. I’m also ok with the lack of manual video focus, (though that is absurd!)...it’s not a video camera. Other than that, you hit every note for me. I’m into stills and unfortunately you didn’t spend one second talking about this cameras best feature...many outdoor action and camera blogs/vlogs say the macro is the best in almost any camera. Action is what this camera is known for and macro underwater, well...the pictures tell the story. There. I just convinced myself. Thanks!

To take 4K, minimum is V30 depending on bitrate, TG5's bitrate isn't too high so it's fine. But due to the file size of 4K videos, choose one with good read speed too so it saves you time when you download them to your computer.

Touch screens don't work when wet. On waterproof phones the touch screen disables itself when wet as a result. Arguably Olympus could do the same here but it's plausible they avoided adding a touch screen altogether because they didnt want this seen as a weakness with the camera. Btw I enjoyed this video, really helpful.

Hi there, first, thank you for watching our video! I will try to put some footage in our website later but the fact is that they are very similar to what you saw in our video, just longer and slightly different angle. The camera performed well underwater and if you stick with the wide angle end, you can utilise the large, bright aperture at 2.0 and the video will seem more stable. I used the zoom to get to the fishes during this trip as I am rubbish in snorkelling so I didn't go deeper at all. As you zoom in, you lose light and the camera will push up the ISO so you get a more noisy video as a result. Around town, this is great as you can see some of my images here. I will also put some more in our website.

One issue not mentioned is there’s no protection for the front glass, the cameras promoted as tough & shown on beaches & in rivers. These environments have sand & as there’s no way of putting a protective filter then the glass can be scratched. Getting it repaired costs around £150. Saying you don’t have to worry about anything is misleading, on every camera I own there’s a filter to avoid this issue but non of the so called Olympus Tough cameras have a way of protecting the glass from accidents.

Go Pro is a dedicated action cam that's best for videos. TG-5 can do more and better in many ways, though it's larger and heavier yet, it's crush proof (Go Pro isn't). So it depends on what you need. Is the image quality, clarity and depth effect of olympus tg 5 better than that of a i phone 8 camera or samsung galaxy 9 or oneplus 6 camera or google pixel 2?
@Red35Photography6 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate for watching. Well, the TG5 has a bigger sensor so in that respect, yes, it will have shallower depth of field technically. However, that's base on optics but new smartphones has computational image processing that makes shallower depth of field and you can't match that. TG5, however, still produces much better image quality and it can shoot super macro and proper waterproof!

Is AF-S an option for video, 4k or otherwise?
@Red35Photography7 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for watching! No, there's no AF-S option unfortunately. Only AF-C or Manual, hence my complaint. But when the day is bright, the camera probably uses a smaller aperture setting and the 'focus drifting' is not obvious due to the greater depth of field.

Nice review! Really interesting to see that the megapixel output dropped. Are there any limitations on the 4k film time? Did you notice if it overheated? I keep meaning to go out and do some street photography with my 25mm PRO - how do you find it performs in that arena?
@Red35Photography7 жыл бұрын
It Genetics Limited Thanks for watching!!! Yes, it's interesting to see companies like Olympus value image quality over mega pixels. I do as a photographer, I care less about resolution but overall image quality. Frankly, there's no mention in the manual saying a limit on 4K and I never really went over 5 mins (which is normally the limit for most compact 4K camera). I didn't notice it gets overheat though, it does use MP4 as video format and no AVCHD or flat LOG profiles. The 25mm PRO is a god send in humid environment and it performs nicely in Cuba. I love the street shots from it, though, with my twins with me, I actually used my 60mm macro as a tele more.

+ Red35 Photography -- Actually, it's given on page 103 in the English manual. I assume it also somewhere near the back in the manuals for other languages as well. But if Olympus decides to include a tweaked manual focus feature, this will be quite an interesting camera to use!

Red35 Photography my main digital camera is the pen f with 9 lenses. A mix of pro and so called 'kit' lenses. I started buying the non pro line recently because of their size weight and quality. The non pros fit the pen wonderfully. The tg1 is an all weather backup. What do i gain except fewer pixels?
@Red35Photography7 жыл бұрын
Hey, haha, well, TG1 has been out for a while so you are not gaining much apart from 'newer' weather sealing, faster AF, 4K and slow mo videos, GPS tracking (not geo-tag), altimeter, barometer, much faster processor, Pro-Capture mode, focus stack... I don't remember them all. But If you are happy with your TG-1, there's no reason to get the TG-5 unless you like the stuff I mentioned. But the RAW files are much better in my opinion in the TG-5, if you want to get the most out from the TG, don't shoot JPG, use them as backup files.

I've been tempted to buy a TG-5 but user reviews say it has a major flaw. One of the rubber covers tends to come open, there is water incursion, and the camera is ruined. Check out user comments on Amazon.
@Red35Photography6 жыл бұрын
I am not entirely convince by some of the comments and I've been using it for over a year now and it's been great. Both the port and batter doors have double-lock mechanism and you just have to make sure they are both 'lock' before you dip the camera in water. I haven't had any problem for all the 'dipping' I had been doing. But all Olympus camera comes with 1-year warranty which if it develops a fault, which is unlikely, you can always get it fixed. I love this camera and it's still the best tough camera out on the market at the moment.

So unfortunately, that includes the flash and you can either set it to auto or off... if you want to force the flash on, you need to turn it to P or A. In P mode, it’s almost like auto but it does allow you to set ISO and flash as well as exposure compensation!

Those 2 girls alone are worth a Thumbs Up! Great review. How is the LCD in sunlight?
@Red35Photography6 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate!!! The LCD seems ok under sunlight when turn to maximum brightness. Though it drains the battery quicker :) I love this little camera.

I hoped for some microphone tests :( maby i missed it or something, but i would really want to know the sound quality on this camera. Im looking for a sturdy, allround vlogging camera that can take a beating, hike and dive So, does anyone know the sound quality on this? Or maybe knows about a video that have a mic sample of this, since the image quality is amazing one can hope the sound is atleast workable
@Red35Photography6 жыл бұрын
It's not bad and here's a link to the video I actually shot on the TG-5 and using the internal mic through out until I got to the beach, where the wave was simply too loud and I used my Lav mic instead. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXnUooyFrbyYf8k Sorry about the wind noise though and add some muffer stickers will help.

Red35 Photography Thank you so much for linking the video to me! I appreciate it very much! 🙏🙏🙏 I will check it out and see what the mic is like :) (and thanks for telling me which part of the video is the internal and external mic)

Does it show time and date on pics
@Red35Photography6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie, well, yes and no. Olympus has removed the simple Show Date & Time feature from the menu but you can still get the date stamp on images via the Print function which will add the date and time capture on the image and save it as a separate file in the DPOF queue. It will be in jpg format.

Impressive. Were those photo edited? Or straight from the camera?
@Red35Photography6 жыл бұрын
Yes, straight out of camera, apart from the night scene where I did add a little contrast/saturations on them.

Nice detailed review! I got a TG4, me and my 11 yr old boy love it. A comment..not about the camera.. You were wearing a sweater in the hot place? 😂

First, thanks for watching our video and glad you enjoyed it. Well, I got you tricked because despite the footage and photos were from my Cuba trip, the review itself, is filmed back in London, UK after I got back :) Unfortunately that London isn't as hot as Cuba!

You should use the camera in FHD always with 60FPS. Then videos will be more smart.

Ever tried using lens caps?
@Red35Photography7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, thanks for watching our video! No, I haven't used the lens cap because it's more cumbersome for me. I don't even use caps for my OM-D for the same reasons. Just make sure your bag is clean and free from debris then it's usually fine. But the new adaptor also allows you to use filters which is hardly sometimes (like ND and Polariser)

Battery life??????
@Red35Photography7 жыл бұрын
Laszlo Bagi First thank you for watching and hope you like the review :) Battery life of this is ok for stills, about 250 shots or so, I never really count exactly because I was filming and taking photos most of the time. But when you film in 4K, it drains battery much quicker and you can see the battery gauge drops after 10 mins or so.

Take it as a comment from a production professional to another video professional. this camera has so many features and not covered in 16 minutes?. more like personal experience travel video than camera review. we all know how to shoot and basic focus things you pointed out. we want something more than sharp and soft that we all expect already from this class of camera.... your video is well edited, nice sound timing, but you are missing what audiences want from product review. review video is not a wedding video or commercial video. it doesn't have to be that pretty but it has to be that specific first because you are basically hold a piece of technology stuff on your hand.

I had the TG4 (which I loved) and unfortunately fell on it and cracked the display panel so I bought the the TG5 - The BIGGEST PIECE OF CRAP ever!!! It is difficult to set settings quickly to capture something on the fly. There are too many dials and options to flip, dial and forward through to set the camera. The video option is not what I hoped for. My action and nature films are out of focus, the movement is broken up and it is impossible to see what you are filming or photographing with only a display panel. It really needs a viewfinder for strong daylight. And the zoom option is nothing like the TG4, and the images are of a lesser quality. Underwater filming has also declined. The camera will not focus on the whole scene and is constantly trying to focus so you have a movie that makes you want to vomit with all the motion going on. SO! you can fall on it and it is more durable. WHO CARES! Olympus does not back up their product and if you want to replace it because of an accident, you will need more coverage than it costs to replace the damn thing. I will never buy another Olympus ever again!
