It looks like a nice camera. The XM-5 is not really a competitor to the OM-5 but is filling the niche left open by the lack of a new Pen camera for the U.S. market. The larger sensor (APSC, 26MP) is a plus, and if they will make some pancake lenses to go with it will make it an easily pocketable camera for every day carry. For the person who is taking pictures with their cell phone it would be a nice up grade and the lack of an EVF may not matter to them (I've noticed that many people who grew up with smart phones use the LCD screen to frame shots even when the camera has an EVF) As a "first camera" it should bring more people into the Fuji system. Bravo!

I like the specs and features of this X-M5, but since I am retired and not a pro photographer, will stick with my current stable of Lumix, Olympus, Sony and Nikon cameras. I don't have any Fuji mount lenses but I have tons of M43 and E-Mount lenses and adapters so in place of the X-M5, will use my A5100, A6000, EM10, GX85 etc. Decided on taking the EM10miii on this last trip because wanted it to blend in and not be a target for theft, worked out well. He didn’t say that the xm5 was a micro43. He clearly said that he wished LUMIX and OMDS would make a camera like this. I’m looking at this, or the rumored 1 inch sensor camera as a replacement for my LX100, since LUMIX has abandoned that design.
@Raist3dbАй бұрын
The closest OM Systems competitor is the EP7. The EP7 has no EVF. It does have IBIS, but IBIS for many situations it's unnecessary and the image quality of the XM5 is higher than the EP7. Plus the XM5 has AI AF, and PDAF, which the EP7 lacks. I put good faster AF and response higher in the hierarchy of needs of a photographic tool than IBIS.

I’d be all for it if it had IBIS. I had an xe3, and my hit rate was quite a bit lower than I’m used to on other systems. If ricoh can put ibis in the GR III, then size+apsc must not be the limitation. Olympus cameras, and many other brands since, have trained me to use IBIS as part of the creative process. Something similar to the idea of the Samsung NX 16-50mm F2.0-2.8 S ED OIS Zoom Lens, and the Lumix 10-25mm f/1.7 m43 lens. (Maybe this lens can be done by Samsung, who knows! jaja) That's would great to see!! And it would make this little camera a king of best entry level camera of all time, for sure! Something less important: Why the Lens Manufactures don't think about Lenses build with Variable ND filter inside the lens, if it is all about glasses or lens area ND filters? That would be great to see one day!

My em5iii is okay at video, but the 4K crop kinda sucks when I thought I had everything composed. I’m not going to buy a new camera right away, but I’ve heard lumix is the better option for video over OM/Olympus. Any recommendations?
@Red35PhotographyАй бұрын
Olympus/OM 4K doesn't crop unless you employ MIS-1 setting (sensor IS + Digital IS). if you switch to MIS2, you will get the full width back with sensor IS only. Like all camera on the market, any DIS needs to crop to give extra stabilisation. I use both Lumix and OM, they both are the same when it comes to crop. Lumix, being a video centric camera maker means that they have more options to play with when it comes to settings, but OM is good enough for most hobbyists to be honest. Extra things mean more distractions. Also, Lumix only gets better if you spend a lot more money on G9 II or GH7, otherwise, you should stick with OM/Olympus.

You're missing the point: M43 has lost its way and most of the new M43 cameras are bigger than most full-frame bodies. Gone are the days of the PEN-F or GM1. The X-M5 fills this gap by offering an APS-C sensor in a body as small as most compact M43 bodies. I'm looking at picking up an X-M5 to compliment my X-T5. Hey, Jimmy has the same denim blue EPL9/10 as I do. Beautiful camera. Anyway, personally, I find the XM5 a bit pricey for a camera without an EVF (7500 Danish kroner where I live). You can get the brand new Nikon z50II at that price (weather-sealed and it has an EVF) Fuji has many lenses, but nothing small with a wide focal length (wider than a 35mm equivalent) which would better fit this small-ish camera (the only one is maybe the old XF 18mm f2?). The XF kit zoom in this video is decent, but larger than I expected when I got one myself (with a XA-3. an older but similar rangefinder style camera body). While the XM5 looks like quite a good still camera, it is obviously heavily geared towards video and here, I think the lack of IBIS hurts it and relying on OIS of some lenses or just digital cropping is a poor solution. Personally, as a more still-oriented guy, I would trade IBIS for an EVF, even a cheapo, low-res one. It makes all the difference when composing shots in bright daylight. Maybe Xm5 works fine for Jimmy in gloomy, cloudy UK, but I can't see myself using an XM5 on trips in, like say, sunny Southern Europe if I can barely see what I am shooting at. I need an EVF. I speak from experience because I use a GM5 and the EVF is terrible but it's still better than having none. So if Fuji would retain the same specs as the XM5 but put it in a theoretical XE body (Fuji's rangefinder line with EVFs), I'd be a lot more interested.
@RJ-Isaac-TSOMLАй бұрын
As a video guy, the open gate feature (not mentioned here) is really cool. This really helps with the challenges of trying to get good portrait frameing from content shot for landscape. The place I really see this camera shining is in video podcast setups. Since the camera is mounted on a tripod, the lack of IBIS isn't much of an issue. The Sony ZVe10 is still cheaper, but I think the better recording from the xm5 makes it worthwhile.

Are you in the market for a new camera? Let me help you a bit. The X-M5 costs €899 body only in The Netherlands. The OM-5 costs €1199. Several people have already mentioned EVF. The lenses in front of that EVF are better than most brands use. The IBIS of the OM-5 is one of the best in the business. The weather sealing of the OM-5 has an IP-53 rating, unlike any other brand. That makes that price difference already justified, but the OM-5 has lots of other features like Starry Sky AF, Live ND, Live Time, Live Composite, Art filters, High-Res (50 or 80MP), focus stacking and the best grip on a small camera ever. Video on the OM-5 is not brilliant, but pretty good indeed and more than enough for a travel camera (and without wobbly artifacts!). Video on the OM-5 has vertical mode which is brilliant for viewing on phones.The OM-5 is rated at 330 shots on a battery charge, and sure enough, if you use processor intense features like High-Res that is about what you get, but on a six hour photo shoot on a wedding I did not change the battery once (1174 shots). Now, isn't that a good proposition? I can make it even better! Suppose the unfortunate happens and you break something on your camera. The OM System repair service is very fast and very good. Even better! If you buy a pro camera or lens OM System will lend you similar gear during repair time. If you buy a €8000 camera from Canon or Leica or so, they do not offer that service. Even better. Quite frequently OM System has very good offers. And I mean serious discounts. Recently for instance the OM-1 with 12-40mm f2.8 Pro for €1499. Just imagine. I pro camera with a pro lens, pro features and pro image quality for €1499! Right now there is a cash back offer on the OM-5 with €300 cash back. That is an OM-5 for X-M5 money! If you have a little patience you could have that camera or lens that you want for an excellent price! Now, if you would all be so kind to make a solid and wise decision and buy that OM-5 camera, OM System will earn more money so they can develop that Micro FourThirds camera that Jimmy was hoping for. Meanwhile you will have great fun with a fantastic camera. #OMSystem #MicroFourThirds

The real issue is that Fuji's primes are still honking huge for what they are. Even older ones that aren't as heavily optically corrected, like the XF 16mm f/1.4, are massive compared to something like the Sony 15mm f/1.4 G.

@@samson40a Sure, but I only mention that because just picking particular lenses is something you can do for any system. And I would even go as far as saying that lenses in the 24-85mm equivalent focal range are more in common than a 12-100 F4 in MFT.

Most important is missing - IBIS!!!
@Raist3dbАй бұрын
Is IBIS really "most important?" You gotta ask yourself if you really need IBIS. If you are shooting in daylight you most likely don't need it. If you are shooting at night but need to freeze subjects, you don't need it. Of course if you are using long telephotos in some situations you might, but long telephotos is probably not a good match anyway for a body this size.

How come you are calling it a m4/3 camera? This is directly from Fuji's pagr for the xm5. Image Sensor 23.5mm x 15.6mm (APS-C) X-Trans CMOS 4 with primary color filter

I still prefer my old EM5 Mk-1 which I still faithfully use over that thing for vacation/travel

Fundamental error in title? I'm pretty sure Fujifilm X-M5 uses APS-C sensor (23.5x15.6mm) not smaller Micro Four Thirds (17.3x13mm)
@yohan2437Ай бұрын
As an owner of many Fuji cameras (currently X100V, XE4, XE3, X70, formerly Xpro2, XT20,XT1,XA-1) I think the Nikon Z30 is better than this XM5 when it comes to ergonomics and image quality. People greatly underestimate the 21 Mp sensor in the Nikon APS-C cameras which is able to render fine detail much better than the muddiness from Fuji Xtrans. It doesn't necessarily render more detail but the Nikon is better at delivering a naturalistic rendering of crisp details and texture missing from my Fujis. All Nikon APS-C lenses have stabilization except for the 24mm f1.7 prime so IBIS isn't really needed.
@Raist3dbАй бұрын
I think the XM5 is better because the image quality is actually better than the Z30 and most importantly (for those of us that this is important), the size is smaller. X-trans renders detail fine if you are using DXO, Iridient Digital or Capture One. I will agree if you use an Adobe product workflow it may not be optimal there though.

The XM-5 is not a micro 4/3 camera. It is APS-C, unless the Fuji website got it wrong.😦

This is Fuji’s attempt to imitate the brilliant E-P7 released 3 years ago. But imagine if OM had released this camera without IBIS. Imagine the outrage 🤷🏻♂️
@Red35PhotographyАй бұрын
haha quite right. We are spoiled with IBIS these days. But to give Fuji credit, this cam has one of the best APS-C sensors available with more than enough 26mp resolution. But it also has hybrid AF and better CAF performance than any PEN cameras to date. Olympus should have given the EP7 hybrid AF when they released it. Other things that I think make the Fuji more 'modern' is the joystick at the back and USB-C. EP 7 and even the OM5 still use micro USB, which is what most users complaints. I think the OM-5 is still my preferred travel cam, but the Fuji is a good alternative given the fact that it has higher resolution, better noise performance at high ISO and those video features (for those who use it of course) will definitely prefer over any similarly priced OM/Lumix small cameras in 2024.

So it's now Fuji's turn to do a really small but crippled camera. The last time it was Panasonic with its S9, which does have IBIS. This one is making the S9 almost acceptable, as you can with the S9 use manual lenses which are cheaper and lighter than AF lenses. And, the S9 is full frame. This one seems like a sunny day outdoor camera, unless you use a big fast lens or AF lens on it, defeating the purpose of a very small camera. The 26MP are not helping if you have to sacrifice and reduce it for some digital IS. Using a higher ISO to prevent shake is also not helping the 26MP IQ. Calling it a M43 camera is an insult to those cameras. Any cheap M43 camera produced in the last 10 years will deliver you a picture, and not just blurred or soft images half the time.

I wish someone would make a camera like this but that didn't bother with video at all. Not everyone does vlogging.

I am not a young man anymore, still I ordered this cam right away. I hate using EVFs, I never get the results I wanted it to be, while with my iPhone 13 Pro I always got what I wanted to shoot. But it lacks on Image Quality. So yes, this XM5 is perfect for me.
@kaptnwelpe5322Ай бұрын
What are Olympus Systems and Panasonic waiting for? They could do better in terms of small and maybe price. But do not offer current technologies like USB-C, usable as a Webcam, UHS-II in their famous small form factors (GF1/2, GX1, E-P, E-PL). No wonder MFT is on decline... . Fujis X-M5 is really tempting to buy - but: no hot-shoe EVF. And: different mount with some Lenses "missing" like a Panasonic G Vario X PZ 45-175 with internal focus. PS: no IBIS? MFT pendant would be a GM1 without flip/titl LCD. Who needs that anyway - just make a usable Smartphone connection (like USB-C over hot-shoe)...

Let us see. No EVF so useless in bright light. XTrans sensor so lower color definition than megapixels would imply. More expensive and heavier lenses than M43. M43 has more faster lenses. M43 has fabulous in body image stabilization and lots of lenses that have internal stabilization that couples with the IBIS. And I want this camera why? Try the Lumix GX8 or GX9.
@King_Of_SpectresАй бұрын
"waaaah no ibis" almost as if that means you'd have to get better at taking photos
@Raist3dbАй бұрын
The real problem is how many people may think they need IBIS as a paper list check instead of asking themselves with the photography they do (they do some right? :-) ), if they really need it. If you re shooting at 1/focal length in FF equiv terms or after, you don't need IBIS. That's a lot of day shots right there.
