@@RedBeardOps idk if you ever noticed but the more polished blade is it's harder for the patina or cold blueing to set it. But more so a patina issue. I struggled to the point of frustration. Last blade i was doing i was lazy on the polish said screw it. Patina was much more efficient. I roughed up the other blades a tad it made a significant difference in all 5 of my blades i did a patina on.

thank you for not doing what a lot of idiots do with angle grinders and recommend gloves, just an FYI for anyone wondering what im talking about, if you wear gloves using a saw, angle grinder, table saw, anything with a circular motion ect. you risk it catching and pulling your hand or fingers into it resulting in losing a appendage or limb depending on the size.

Hobbies to avoid: telescope mirror making, ham radio, soaring, sailing, oboe playing, stock trading, golf, harmonica, and a few others. The knives I have made were made from rebar, so they are not as robust as the one in this video. For everyday carry, I like a Swiss Army knife... because it has a phillips screwdriver.

PPE: Short story.... 20 years ago I was in at 1 of the big 3. Back before all this technology so I was fortunate to have that job. When it came to rules/ regulations of course we needed PPE, but no headphones. They provided the ear protection. I was 19 and wanted music but my job more. There was this guy 1 machine over who did wear phones and lost his arm shoulder and bit of his left ear. I learned real smart real quick about the policy protection for our ears not distraction from our jobs. Had to be aware enough to hear the machines when they go off, or back up, or any sound they should not be making. Ready to hit the BIG RED button when needed. Yes I did say when not if. So filing away with a file .... sure have some shop music from a radio. But please don't plug your ears with music to the point you can't hear your equipment. Thanks guys

1) I've been wearing 3M half mask respirators for 15 years. We get fit tested every year as required my federal law. Some companies require us to shave others dont as long as your seal will pass. Ive seen miners with twice the beard you have and pass with flying colors. 2. A bbq grill with lump charcoal and hair dryer will work very well to get your blade to non magnetic. Great video, keep it up.

I loved your honesty. Yes you can make a knife with cheep tools, yes it will work, yes the feeling of accomplishment is second to none, but to make something truly great it sometimes requires just that step above. That could be time, equipment, skill (from doing/learning) or just a continued love of what your doing and trying to better it and yourself. Either way for me nothing compares to the felling of achievement and the joy I get from making simple knives for my family and friends that I have been able to make from watching people like you. So thank you.

As far as epoxy goes, 5 minute set time epoxy will hold up for a while, but it isn't waterproof and will deteriorate after several years, 60 minute set epoxy is waterproof and wont deteriorate the same way 5 minute will (it can last upwards of 30 years)

5 minute epoxy has a much lower melting point. It’s great for glueing fishing rod tip guides as you can remove/ reposition the guide using a butane lighter to soften the epoxy. But, use slow set epoxy for scales.

I really enjoyed this video, along with all your others, and its very helpful to show how anyone can join the knifemaking hobby -without breaking the bank! Of course if you really get into it you'll want a 2x72 grinder but even a 1x30 or other tools are very effective. Also any of my knifemaking tools (including my 2x72 and metal cutting bandsaw) I end up using to complete other projects in the house so its not really a waste. Last things last... I hate to be negative but- the mustard patina thing just looks terrible on a blade imo. Just go with a vinegar or coffee etch/possibly a stonewash...

One thing that is helpful with the angle grinder: Save worn sanding discs for the edge work. It will be slower, but a little more forgiving. Still must be careful though. Same is true of cut off wheels. I save some that have worn down (smaller radius) to get into tight spots. Dont take them all the way down to the drive-dog of course- they will break apart at some point.

Instead of Instead of 1084, you can use an HSS lathe cutoff or parting tool. No heat treating needed, 65-68 HRC, takes and holds an edge like no other steel. Imagine a rookie cutting a notch in someone's fancy D2 knife with his very first knife! 😜
