My father, George C. Fields, founded Max-Torque and designed the clutches and the triple engine racing carts that were world champions in the unlimited class. He lost the company when the local banker called in the loan on his working capital on no notice then bought the company out of bankruptcy for his son to run. Many of the machines and processes are identical to when I worked there as a kid in the summer nearly 60 years ago. BEfore Max-Torque my dad designed the Doodle Bug, arguably the first mini-bike. Two of his patents from it have been used by Harley Davidson, one on frame design and another on their torque converter. All in all, he had some 28 patents plus original work for the war dept. during WW2 for which he could not file.

nobody talks about the Hillard Extreme Duty clutches also made in the USA, I can not kill it, its been abused its entire life, even came off in pieces when the bolt came off my error, got all the pieces back together and still runs like a scolded ape and can be installed up to 13hp engine, crazy good clutch.

@@mcpeake78 My first mini bike was for my 10th birthday, a lil indian 3hp briggs&stratton powered hardtail that came from Ruttmans ,in Dearborn Heights Michigan in 1967.Troy Ruttman himself showed me how and where to apply oil to the clutch bushing and in over a half century Ive never once seen or heard anyone else since talk about lubing the bushing as a matter of maintenance and adding life to a clutch. Go figure...

The inner spring on my clutch is SO FUCKING STRONG that it literally ripped my thumbnail off when i tried this. holy fucking shit. I still have to fix the thing and without a thumbnail now. How are the metal weights not just rocketing in every direction the second you let go of the spring/???

I have a stage 4 predator..ideals around 2400 rpm.. can I just replace the spring in the clutch for higher rpm engagement or do I have to replace the whole clutch assembly? This engine is installed on a drift trike so I'm on and off the throttle a lot..which I'm positive that the clutch is getting hotter than a clutch in a normal situation..is there anything that I can do to help keep the clutch cooler? I have seen people drill extra holes in the dust cover..does this actually count for anything?

Had a minibike with a 3.5 tecumseh from when I was about 12 years old to today I’ll be 35. Ran the hell out of that engine and clutch never knew to oil it. It’s still working today haha. Now I know to oil them. Thanks for the video

Hey, RB, speaking of clutches... I've built a boat and I'll be powering it with a Predator 212. I need a clutch that will go between the crankshaft of the engine and the prop shaft (this is an inboard setup). 3/4" shaft from the engine, 3/4" prop shaft. Most all centrifugal clutches I've seen have a sprocket on the "output" end...makes perfect sense for a go kart or mini bike, but I need one that has a female "output" end that can accept that 3/4" prop shaft. Do you know if such a thing exists? If so, what is it called?

The factory clutch on my Colemam EX has needle bearings instead of a bushing. I have no doubt Max Torque makes a great product. However, I'm curious how someone would consider a bushing superior to a needle bearing?

IMO a caged needle bearing beats a bushing. Bushings do fine when under a constant oil bath like in an engine or transmission but are proven to be problematic in a dry environment where more maintenance is needed. Bearings use grease and are often sealed to keep grease in and dirt out. As you may know your clutches bearing needs grease not oil. Oil is only a temporary fix. All you need are snap ring pliers, some brake clean and decent quality wheel bearing grease and you are good to go. If you use too much grease it may bleed out onto the drum area so don't use too much. They got smart when they went to the 16mm shaft that the clutch sits on. This uses the clutch with the caged needle bearing. Way less clutch complaints and warranty costs. Prior to late 2016 they used a 3/4 shaft which used the clutches with the bronze bushing. The clutch with the bronze bushing is pretty much a proven design that has been around for decades. It's just that it needs proper maintenance to operate properly, like squirts of oil after every ride. Most people who buy these mini bikes don't know this.

Greg, so these are the best on the market ? What is so different about them in the go-kart world? Reason I'm asking is I bought a go-kart that was inop and the clutch was in pieces in a box and it appears to be one of these. But in the performance duty, what's special about them over other spin clutches? I'm still a bit behind in clutch technology .

does having a higher rpm engagement change the top speed or acceleration? If you raise the rpm that the clutch engages at, dont you have less gear to accelerate with? Or is it negligible unless you absolutely have the wrong spring for your motor? I.e. Clutch engages at 3k but engine idles at 1800.

It's neat to see how a lot of the parts you buy without thinking about them are made. It's even neater when it's something made by a small company as you get to see the people who make the product in steps. Not just a bunch of machines doing everything. Also, I wonder if a light machine oil like 3-IN-1 or the oil that comes in the Zoom Spout bottles would help with keeping the bushing lubricated. I'm a fan of both. :)

So I actually use synthetic oil from the dipstick and oiled the clutch with it. Is this way at high rpms it feels like my clutch slips/ about to give up? Or is it just my valve springs

hope you have put a guard around the back wheel of that go cart so rocks and small stones dont put a hole or 2 in that pod air filter it s a time bomb waiting to mess up a good engine cylinder you will score it bad if u sell stuff like that and that happenes and that motor is scored and blowes blue smoke wel u could be getting them a new motor would want to see a video on what you did to fix thia cart and this 1 only

perhaps they should send a replacement bushing just in case they do not read the instructions the first time to keep the original one lubricated.
