After several rewatches you kind of realize that Laurie is the only person who sees all of Amy's flaws and never made her feel bad for them. He was endeared when she was bratty or whiny, he admired her when she was headstrong, and he even said "yes, but I like that" when Jo asked him if Amy hassled him all around Europe. Laurie has always held a sort of affection towards her, and has never directed any negative feelings or misgivings towards her. Even in the beginning ballroom scene, his bad temperament was less directed at her and more at his lingering bitterness towards Jo, his jealousy of Fred, and his disappointment at himself. No wonder Amy loved him so much, ever since she met him.

It's because most adaptations of Little Women haven't given her a very flattering depiction. They always tend to focus on Jo and while Jo spends all her time not caring about what others think of her, Amy is all too aware of it. And while Jo always knows that she wants to be a great writer, the thing that Amy always knows is that she will marry rich. They make her character seem petulant, petty, and preening. The 2019 Little Women gives us an Amy that is not drawn in broad, over simplified strokes, but given depth and complexity not afforded to her by previous adaptations. Here, she is not defined by her pettiness but her prowess in playing the game set before her, her clear-eyed perspective of reality, and a steeliness that might have once struck viewers as only petulance. Of course, in Greta Gerwig’s capable hands, all the March sisters have become more real.

I see myself a lot in Amy. Even though I am a writer and as non committal as Jo, I am the youngest who always grew up second fiddle to my sister in everything. Then in my love life I was 2nd to everyone else and no one saw the love I had under my stern voice. Amy is so strong in her femininity and she is beautiful and complicated and Laurie seems to be the only one who sees all sides of her and loves them all. He understands her and she in return acts as a push to help Laurie finally grow up from his teenage self. I love it. And I love how good Amy made me feel about myself and how Laurie rekindled my hope to find someone to truly get me. One of the reasons that I love this movie (and the Little Women story in general) is because it’s one of the few stories I’ve read that shows that a love can be real and can change you as a human being in the deepest of ways without it having to be THE STORY of your life. During the entire movie we ship Laurie and Jo, but in the end Jo’s story isn’t about romantic love, but about friendships, her love for her sisters and her growth as a human being. And I just think that such a lovely beautiful and timeless concept that was far beyond it’s time.

i love the ballroom scene so damn much, because we see how amy matured and how broken laurie is, who we’ve seen to be charming and kind and sweet and a little immature, turn into a bittersweet and apathetic mess because of jo. and thank god for amy, because she doesn’t put up with it and is rightfully hard on him abt it, and obviously hurt about the “spending fred’s riches” dialogue from laurie, because how could he? she has always seen the happy part of laurie growing up so it must’ve been so off putting and upsetting to see laurie in such a state. i love them sm also, i would like to dedicate this whole section to laurie’s expressions in paris when fred is around/mentioned: when they’re in the studio, laurie is upbeat as always…until he asks if amy would say yes to fred if he ever got down on his knee, which is where he crowds into himself almost, his eyes going red and his straight face turning into a small frown. it’s absolutely devastating to him because he thought amy wouldn’t have actually said that. and then, holy shit, the BOW SCENE??? amy’s obliviousness and unawareness to the way laurie is looking at her, staring at her longingly, as if this would be his last chance to ever touch her. amy’s spent her whole life loving him yet she can’t figure out that laurie is obviously starting to feel something?? i mean it is the 1860s but yk…anyway, and then the scene as he tells amy she’s beautiful and *is* beautiful, he’s on the verge of tears istg because he knows she basically belongs to fred (which can allude to his fault since he introduced fred to the marches all those years ago) and knows he can’t really say anything else at that moment. and then when he watches amy go to fred after he comes off the carriage and greets him with such a smile, he’s heartbroken and has the same look of despair he had when his proposal was rejected from jo. he was longing for her and amy was so oblivious to it holy shit

I lowkey shipped him with Amy and was pretty happy when they ended up together. I was just wondering why he had such almost intimate scenes with all of them, was he just being portrayed as like an almost perfect man or something?? or am i overananlyizing this

The movie does a great job of giving each girl time in the spotlight just as Louisa May Alcott (jo) wrote the book. Laurie was a part of their family -indoctrinated into their fiscally poor, but richly relational home while he had all the wealth, but had a home life starved of noise and excitement. He's not portrayed as romantically interested in all of them, but rather the brother figure they don't have. It's definitely about the dynamic of filling each other up in ways they all need. It's a different kind of love and sometimes out of that, romantic love grows.

in the novel laurie actually "likes" all of them in a different way. he says jo is his favorite, meg is the prettiest, beth is the one he is more affectionate about and amy is the one he is more dedicated too. he saw meg first but she was too old for him so he created a relationship with jo and although he spent most of his time with amy, there is a part in the book where jo thinks he and beth are in love, so she goes to new york. there is a very great phrase on the 1994 version of the movie where laurie says that he always thought he would end up being a part of the march family no matter who with.

I actually love Amy's voice. It's strong, commanding, and powerful. She's a she alpha and she's the perfect woman to control the vulnerable Laurie. They're a perfect balance. I love that Jo did not really end up with anyone (although she was forced to write that she did). I remembered when laurie told her that she will fall in love and would die for that person and he was going to sit and watch, I know he only said that out of spite but I'm glad that it didn't really happen yiu know. The fact that afterall Jo's priority is her and her freedom is very revolutionary especially at that time. Sure, she had a weak moment when out of loneliness she wanted Laurie back and maybe, if he hadn't married Amy before they got home and reads the letter, he probably would have proposed to her which of course will make this whole movie pointless as she didn't love Laurie that way.

The reason why I think we love Amy and Laurie together better is because in the beginning of the film and throughout we see Laurie and army together. If Laurie was with jo the whole (present) of the film then when Laurie and Amy get together it would’ve felt weird and forced but because we saw their chemistry unfold throughout the film and their moments together it helps make us see sense in their narrative. Personally I love amy and Laurie. She has always loved him, and sat quietly on the sidelines and never said anything about it because of her sister. She always wanted the best for him and she loves him for who he is. Laurie revealed that he stopped doing things he loved for jo therefore changing himself or her, and jo only loves the idea of being loved rather than loving someone else!

yes, I like this difference, which is that Laurie does not need to change himself for Amy. Amy already loves him (and has loved him for many years) for what he is.

I honestly feel bad for Amy, especially when she was a child. Jo was usually really rude and disrespectful to her and treated her poorly for having childish urges and wanting to go to things like the theatre and getting constantly told ‘no’ or ‘your too young’ . People treat her badly outside of the little women world too, she was told she was immature her whole childhood (she was 12, what did they except?) and got mad at her when she acted how they depicted her. I really love Amy and don’t understand that hate she gets.

i've been stuck in a hole called Amy & Laurie. I bought the book and couldn't stop myself to repeating the chapters of Amy & Laurie. I loved the chapter when Amy called out Laurie who ran away from reality by being 'lazy' because of his broken heart. Amy is kind and lovely but it didn't stop her to say words which Laurie needs although it's quite hurtful for him. and when Laurie talked about Amy with Jo. and Laurie reassurance words that he loves Amy and he would be happy if Jo marry Friedrich...

I feel like Laurie wasn’t IN LOVE with Jo. He liked the challenge. He saw her as a conquest of sorts. She swore she’d never marry and he wanted to be the one to change her. It was the chase for him. But Amy surprised him. At first he contemplated her as another conquest. If he couldn’t have Jo maybe he could have Amy as the next best thing but then she refused him too. She surprised him with her rejection. He realized she wasn’t someone to settle for. He realize she wasn’t a conquest or Jo’s second best. He realized she didn’t need saving. He was enough. His love was enough. It wasn’t enough for Jo. But it was more than enough for Amy. It was everything for Amy. And to his shock and dismay he fell in love with her. Not the idea of her but he fell in love with her soul. With her kindness and compassion. With her ability to see the good in everyone. He fell in love with her naivety. With her sense of humor and her innocence. He fell in love with her practical side and he fell in love with her hopeless romantic side. She fell first but he fell harder.
