I live in a small town with no leash laws so everyone’s dogs run free as most houses sit on acreage. We must have new neighbors because a gorgeous Redbone hound has come to visit me and my dogs daily. He has a collar and is healthy and friendly. He is so handsome and eye-catching. I didn’t know much about the breed until watching this video. Thank you! They are impressive dogs.

I have a redbone/retriever mix. She looks much like the redbone, but her color goes from red at her head to reddish tan on her lower body and her ears aren't as long (still pretty long though). She definitely has the energy level though, that dog wants to run and play all day long. Three long walks a day, frequent trips to the dog park, and she still spends a lot of time bouncing off the walls of the house. Super sweet and very smart.

I have a almost 3 year old redbone and she is a runner she's never been on a leash other to bathe. I live in the woods about and she and my black mouth kur come and go as they plz. I highly recommend a redbone as a pet to keep away unwanted bear and coyotes she was a little scared when we heard the bobcat. Over all great dog with energy enough to keep unwanted wild animals away.

The name Redbone comes from an early breeder from Tennessee named Peter or Daniel redbone. He did a lot for establishing them as a breed

My advice is: DO NOT get a Redbone hound unless you can run that dog 10 miles per day. A good long run, a run with you alongside while you're biking or else an enormously long beach walk w/ the hound off-leash. I speak from experience because my Redbone hound got a ridiculous amount of exercise with me when I was a teenager. He could run 10 miles in a day, easy. Then, 15 minutes later he would take off and be found 1/2 way across town. Redbones make excellent family dogs, but only if you can wear them out to the point of exhaustion. Everything said in this video is correct about making sure to have a high fence, buried at the bottom. BUT-----to chain or tether a hound dog is just cruel. Don't get any dog if you intend to leave it all on its own for hours on end. That's terrible for the dog. The Redbone hound is known for its "bell" ------ meaning its bark has a wonderful and distinct tone to it, extremely pleasing and can be heard for quite some distance. These are not barky dogs at all, but when they're happy they will call out the most splendid aaahhhhooo aaahhhhooo sound. It is wonderful to hear. My Redbone (male) wasn't into fetching or toys or chasing after things. He was super mellow------as long as he got enough exercise. He wasn't hyperactive or needy, not in the way some working dogs are. He just loved to run with the bike and play on the beach and take long long **long** mountain hikes. It is true Redbones will follow their noses, so you really MUST train them to have a great recall. I learned how to whistle loud enough (people would be astounded at my loud whistle) so that my dog could find me, no problem. But he did get lost a couple times, thanks to him taking off on his own. He lived to be 14 years of age. We buried him in the backyard. I still think about him a lot and feel lucky to have had such a cool, lovable, terrific, fun companion for all my adventures when I was young. That said, and I know I'm sounding repetitive here: these dogs are bred to run, run, RUN. (Please note: Spay and Neuter. If you just have to have a certain breed of dog----go to breed specific rescue online and ADOPT.)

I'll say this for the person who hasn't had one but will for hunting, mine sacrificed herself for me. Took the Gore from a hog meant for me. They can be highly intelligent when the need calls. But it depends on the dog I suppose. A good bloodline is a must in my personal opinion. Makes all the difference.
