Max Stöckl Sets WORLD RECORD Fastest MTB Downhill Speed: 167KPH!

Markus 'Max' Stöckl is driven by the need for speed. The general manager of the World Cup-running MS-Racing Mondraker MTB Team likes nothing better than to go down a slope as fast as possible and has been setting speed downhill mountain-bike records for over 20 years.
For his new V-Max project, 42-year-old Stöckl was aiming to beat his own speed world record for cycling down a gravel-based mountain on a production mountain bike. The current record was set In 2011 when Max bombed down the volcanic cone of Cerro Negro in Nicaragua at 164.95kph.
Stöckl and his six-man support team identified Chile’s Atacama Desert on the country’s Pacific Coast. Nothing thrives here, all that can be seen is boulders and stones for miles and miles.

James L This helmet gives no head/spine protection at all at this speed. Actually, even the best fullface helmet for motocross or downhill wont help that much either you're pretty much fucked if you lose control of your bike at these speeds going down such a slope.

The crazy thing is his pulse went to 169. No idea what his mac heart rate is but my theoretical Max is like 183, meaning if I climb to 184 some sort of arrhythmia, infarction, or heart attack is inevitable. And while there is actually a really good gap from 167 to 180, you're well into aerobic workout territory (most likely) at 140. But what makes this crazy to me is that it's basically JUST from adrenaline because he's not moving any part of his body except for his arms to control the handle bars. Everything else is stationary. So he's getting the kind of workout like he just did 200 jumping jacks or somethings for basically sitting motionless on a bike and the RUSH of going down the hill that fast made his heart beat like it was an insane workout.

Actually, I was replying to MrR0FL but wrongly assumed youtube would distinguish that in my post since I clicked reply on his comment :) It honestly depends on the environment. I imagine that the fatty would win if it was a very steep and long race, because their aerodynamics wouldn't be massively different (fatties aren't quite as streamlined as manitee's compared to their bony competitors) but because of the added mass, they'd force through the air a lot more. On a short and shallow decline, the bony guy could potentially win as added mass means higher friction with the ground and air resistance being negligible in that case.
