I always felt coil was better than air, but the tech is growing so quick. Keep in mind being a sponsored pro with mechanics and manufacturers prototype support makes a difference. I know in snowmobiles air didn’t really work well. I saw Sam Hill just after 2001 or so at age 17 maybe on an Iron Horse. He won the US open at Mountain Creek New Jersey. Cool to see him go as far as he did in the sport.

The emphatic shift in the video was rather disjointed, for sure. That said I recently went from an admittedly worn old air shock to a 2017 Fox Van(illa) coil (no lockout or high-end perks on closeout sale to replace the cashed air can with Pro-Pedal) and I love the feel of coil suspension. The weight, even with the cheaper heavy spring instead of the light version, doesn't register to me as much as heavier tires do. The benefits outweigh the drawbacks for me and I don't even do altitude. I am no pro, but damn, am I impressed with coil suspension, especially if one considers 'what if' scenarios of mechanical failure far from home/support outside of racing.
