It's indeed sad. That whole generation of comedy and entertainment is gone, living only in our memories. I just know deep in my heart Red is Roasting God in heaven. Red: (Roasting God, Man of the Week?) "Why are we roasting this god when some of the greatest Gods never got a dinner? We're roasting a god whose can't spell his original name. Dog. Why Him?" Zeus who said to Hera, 'Are you sure Hercules is my son? He looks more like Lou Ferrigno'. Zeus never got a dinner. Bhudda. Bhudda who said to his cook. 'Forget just once the plain rice and noodles. Give me a Tbone steak, a baked potato and a good beer. Never got a dinner. Odin, the Viking warrior god and part time bellhop at Valhalla who once said to Kirk Douglass, 'Funny, but you don't really seem like a Viking.' Never got a dinner. Got a leaky boat, but no dinner roast. Red: "But this god, God, he gets a dinner and all he's got is an old, crusty wooden cross.". (walks off shaking his head)

Comics like Red Buttons and Don Rickles (and many others here I could mention) had such well-honed, brilliant timing, that they are still funny today and will be in the foreseeable future, even if you don't know the people they reference in their lines. The context they set in each line is sufficient and readily understood.

My family used to sit around the television set and watch the "Dean Martin Comedy Roast." It was and, to be quite honest, is the funniest show to grace television. Guttural laughter. Foster Brooks and Red Buttons made that show. Still funny to this day.
@ralphadamo185710 жыл бұрын
Because comedy frequently concerns the culture of the day, the material from years ago can often seem dated. But these Dean Martin Roasts are still funny--even though, sadly, most of the great performers and artists appearing here have passed away. Red Buttons is in peak form here and make the best of the material. Everyone is having such a great time, and we're with them all the way.

The first time I saw Red Buttons was in a 60s short lived comedy TV series, The Double Life Of Henry Phyfe, in which he played a guy who was supposed to be a spy with no idea of what to do about it. I did not know then that he was already a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award winner for his dramatic turn in Sayonara (1957), you can see in this clip some of his range even while playing for laughs. But when he couldn't help laughing at his Joe Torre joke just made it funnier, shows that he was really enjoying it, as everybody else is. Also remember him as one of the six surviving characters at the end of The Poseidon Adventure (1972). A 1-derful and talented individual !!!!
