I have a Gen8 with a 4 wheel steering mod, and I blew out my rear axle. Not the shaft itself, but the part that attaches between the steering knuckle and the axle tube. Ripped those three little screws right out and destroyed the axle tube/diff. Just got it back on the trail with an upgrade RCAIDONG aluminum diff, steering knuckle, and portal boxes. Took a bit of fiddling to get the pinion and ring gear set right, because it's a non-shim setup, and I didn't know it the first time I put it together, and I could feel that the gears weren't meshing right. Took it apart again, removed the outer axle tubes from the center diff, and tapped the center carrier back and forth until the ring gear and pinion were moving smoothly. Seems to run great now. Considering posting my own assembly and install vid when I do the same operation with the other end.

Thank you for this very clear video. I was not looking forward to servicing my front portal, but this video makes it seem less scary

Great info as always. I just got my Gen 8 and was happy to see my portals were well greased from the factory. After my first run which involved water, I cleaned them out and put marine grease in for some added peace of mind.

Front Right pin and gear broke on the portal axle on mine today. Heard Redcat is really good about their warranty though so fingers crossed! Went ahead and ordered more pins and the upgraded axles and housings from them too.

I’m receiving mine today, only ordered it yesterday, and yes I know the axe version is coming out but I’m more than happy with this. I’ve watched a lot of videos on here about it, and if I listened to thee quarter of them I wouldn’t have bought it. Lots of haters and moaning out there. This is a nice video and I feel excited to be getting mine x God bless bro.x

David Carroll awesome. It’s possible the latest versions have some upgraded stuff like axle shafts. Not 100% on that but it’s very possible

Solid walk-through, but hindsight is 20-20 of course, and we've learned a thing or two, eh? One is the "bit thin" mount at 1:13 which immediately failed for a long list of folks, undercutting (some argue) Redcat's hopes of joining the top-tier brand names. The fix is SSD's affordable alloy replacements, but if you wait until the links rip out, good luck saving the axle housings. if you do fix those link mounts, the Gen8 chassis is a budget-friendly platform you can count on, and one of my favourites. Cheers and thanks, Joe.

If you purchase one of the gen8's I would recommend buying the aluminium diff upgrade kits with it, 20 mins in mine twisted the rear diff in 2 on a simple rock climb, still awaiting replacement parts.

Awesome video looked great inside cheaper priced truck but definitely built nice and can't believe the grease that's good

Seen two videos now where people have found the portals dry. But a buddy on FB said his were greased. Lesson to be learned? Best to check them just in case you need to add some.

Great vid. Newb to crawling and these sort of trucks but not to rc. Recently acquired a used Gen 8 and enjoy it. Guessing mine was not shown much love and hence why I'm checking this particular video out. My question is there any caster adjustment for the front. My right front is leaning something fierce. Hoping it's not a bent housing. Thanks in advance

Should I put locktite on the drive shaft where it meets the diff? To avoid it frost coming out?

😁👍Cool your ripping it all apart... now I think I will be taking my portals apart and putting some grease in them seems that's the spot they did not grease to good.maybe take the axle covers off to check the big diff gear.
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
Yeah opening the portal cases and diff cover can be done fast and easy. I did add grease to all portal gears.

Great video, how do you feel about using dif fluid instead of grease? I'm thinking fluid may quiet it down a bit. They are sealed right?
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
I doubt the boxes seal well enough to hold in an actual fluid.
@MakeItHappenOriginal5 жыл бұрын
I was curious on that aswell.
@stpbasss37735 жыл бұрын
Yeah diff fluid it usually used inside the diffs in the little internal gears an it has a gasket, don't put diff fluid in a fully locked diff crawler there is no point it will leak out. When I was new to the hobby I thought diff fluid went where the grease goes and I filled my diff cases up with fluid and it leaked out everywhere lol.

@@ExocagedRC I can't seem to find it anywhere online. Do you know the measured width of the chassis and axles? I'm trying to figure out if I should buy a gen8 chassis for a project.
@ka41725 жыл бұрын
Is it possibel to shave the diff cover some mm for more ground clearance? It looks like the diff cover is a bit larger than the axel gearbox.
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
its possible to do that, I don't know if the gains would be worth it or not.
@ka41725 жыл бұрын
Nice video ,why Red Cat put the link fixing carries on the axel so deep (easy stuck on rocks)? On the TRX4 the axel clearance is way better.
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын

How important is it to replace the knuckles and hubs with aluminum ones?

Please help my center drive shaft pulled out of my front differential the little screw holding the pinion gear some how backed out causing the drive shaft to separate . I know how to reassemble but I lost the bearing that sits in the back of differential where the hard pinion inserts . I don't know the size I need to order for a replacement . Thank you
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
pretty sure its a 5x10x4 bearing in there, I don't have one to check but you could send redcat an email and they can verify

What’s the stock tire height on the gen8?
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
I believe they are 4.65”
@redhay94815 жыл бұрын
Oh thanks I’m looking at buying one this week and will be looking at tires also and wanted to go a little bigger
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
@@redhay9481 Some guys are having issues with axle pinions with larger tires and more power, the proline super Swamper XL is a little bit larger and look great.
The bearings on the portals are tiny compared to those on the TRX4 specially the output bearings.. Those mod 1 gears are meaningless if the bearing is undersized for the load.
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
So far I’ve not had an issue and I haven’t heard of anyone else having an issue yet. They could’ve been bigger but they are what they are.
@skirmich5 жыл бұрын
@@ExocagedRCYeah the smallest bearing in the TRX4 portal (Input Shaft Small) 4x10x4 is Bigger than the Redcat 4x8x3 for the same application. And the difference in the output shaft alone is noticeable: TRX4 has 6x12x4 (Carrier Bearing) and 6x13x5! (Output) vs Redcat 4x8x3 (Carrier Bearing) and 6x12x4 (Output) Again is probably ENOUGH for a low speed crawler but is something to note in future videos, The TRX4 drivetrain strength is SUPERIOR overall to that of the Redcat Gen8, Not only in the portal? but also on the propeller input shaft bearings, Transfer and Transmission all of them have bigger bearings in the TRX4 with Mod 1 gears and a healthy dose of grease in the portals/transfer/transmission which at least in the portals seems missing in the Redcat.
@stpbasss37735 жыл бұрын
The redcat has the same size axle bearings on the end as a Slash because mine was missing a front axle bearing when I got my gen8 and I threw an extra Traxxas one I had in it.
@bigmanrctoys84844 жыл бұрын
I abuse my Gen 8, and I never had a bearing fail since I bought the truck. I stuff those portals full of synthetic grease and there's no issue ever.

Major design flaw? No outer bearings on the axle tubes. Dirt and water will alway find its way into the pumpkin. Kind of a deal breaker for me honestly
@clarkb19002 жыл бұрын
7:14 He pulls the shaft out and the outer bearing comes with it. It definitely has them. You can only see the rears in the vid, but the front probably has them retained behind the c-hubs. 2:00
