I’ve got the v2.. I don’t really have another crawler to compare it to but in my opinion these are probably the greatest out of the box crawler. I added brass to mine, magnets for body mounts and internal spring shocks, and injora wagon wheels, but I absolutely love my scout

We need to applaud Redcat for getting licensing to get such a great looking package. The review is about as good as you can get, and perfect for those of us who have too many trucks to pull the trigger on the new guy...but the night is young and the paypal is the ready!!! And if redcat is listening....a ramcharger body WOULD make me pull the trigger!!!!!!!!!!

I got the gen8 kit version and made a 65 landcruiser, I agree with everything you said besides the body stuff of course because I wouldn't know lol. I've had a trx4 sport and a scx10ii and I think I like my gen8 the most it's still pretty early but it's awesome, I did switch out the servo horn for a Vanquish clamping servo horn that is flat so it raised the steering arm angle and seemed to fix the bump steer a little, not all the way gone but it's definitely better.
@VanOrdCustoms
@VanOrdCustoms 5 жыл бұрын
Nice. I could see how the servo horn would be helpful.

Sure it don't have locking diffs, or a two speed tranny like the Trx4 Bronco. Which is awesome by the way for turning radius, rock racing/bashing. But for the price, with portal axles, it's one hell of a scale comp trail truck.

Yes Adam, I would trust that face. That is the Redcat Racing Gen 8, the first version, version 1, in orange. I wish I could find one, but I can't. The Gen 8, V2 comes in metallic green, and a really nice metallic purple, which I would prefer. These are really great crawlers for the price, $279.00. It beats paying from $550.00, up to $800.00, for other 1/10th scale crawlers.

I haven’t heard of either of those issues before. I liked this one enough that I bought the PACK Lit for myself and will be building a new rig with it. I tend to not be very hard on things when I run them so I am not really worried about any durability issues.

I don't drive or fly ANYTHING right out of the box. I check it out entirely first. It's the right thing to do. THEN with all the original parts that passed my inspection, or not in some cases cause I'll know the weakness and act accordingly, then see what fails. I mostly fly, so if something fails in the air,,, It's MUCH more catastrophic when it stops moving. LOL

My personal opinion is that the gen 7 is better because it’s more realistic and if you want you can get a upgrade to portals and a slipper , and it’s $200 but the gen 8 is $300+ at the same time the portal upgrade and slipper is $80-90 hence it makes more sense to buy the gen 7 and have a cooler body in my opinion upgrade the slipper and then gearbox and then it should be a awesome trail truck

i am just about click on buy it now for $440 AUD hope thats a good price its my first real crawler as the only thing that i have had that i love going over rocks and climbing with is my tamiya unimog 406 cc01 4wd chassis and loved it so much i bought the cc01 / 425 version unimog 4wd but still yet to build as been having too much fun driving the first one , came with a light kit ,light buckets and painted to box art it looks like just rolled off the showroom floor and have made a small test track in my front yard with pits ,logs,rocks and holes and man its a blast to drive so i fall in love with this style of driving so now i must get myself a crawler and i was looking at the unimog mst cmx unimog crawler as i love that body but then came across the redcat gen8 scout2 so looks like this review has sold me on this , i will still get the mst unimog and most likely the axial sc crawler clone also as its much cheaper than the mickoy but basically does the same thing unless anybody can tell me different and if so please do as im only new at this style of rc although been around rc cars since the mid 80's first car was a metro jethopper lol then ppl around me where getting frogs,hornets silverfox(nitro)this is when things where great but all i could do as a kid was dream about the high end stuff then in 1989 got myself or my parents got me a turbo optima mid SE and that was the BOMB, best car at the track boy was i happy and yes an awesome car so then from there went on to aeroplanes and still onto the planes but in the past 7 years got back into cars also and have many tamiya kits including ones i once dreamt about , yes i have a frog from 1983 , lol but once i did a little off road diving with locked diffs in the unimog i was sold on this style of driving , its like almost being a child again in that sand pit but with toys you dont have to push by hand, lol so looks like ill be spending a few thousand on crawlers and loving every cent of it, thanks for this video and review as i found it good informative and useful and will be subbing and following from now on , thanks again from the land down under stay safe all and happy crawling ..........

From what I have read and viewed on the GEN eight scout to is it has a lot more things that can go bad right off the bat need to be upgraded such as weak gears, servo etc. The GEN seven also needed upgrades almost immediately out of the box. There were many things that were substandard in my opinion. But the thing is is it’s with this hobby it’s a great part of it is upgrading improving modifying.I’ve been running mine on the average of about three times a week in all kinds of different terrain and weather conditions, and have finally gotten all the bugs worked out of it turning it in to a great tough dependable trail truck.

I run it every weekend sometimes during the week for instants when I’m out of work at the end of the day if I happen to be staying overnight out at the beach. This is been a really good vehicle. however I have had to upgrade it considerably to keep it from breaking down constantly. But that’s fine too and not too terribly expensive. This is the next truck I'll get, I have the Gen 7 pro already it'll be a great addition to it plus my daughter can drive either one of it with me. As for the blacked out windows, it is very very minor issue for me(maybe not others)...but look at the pricepoint of this truck Redcat hits a homerun with it, their first ever in-house design/built. It's not perfect, but it'll keep getting better maybe the Gen 9 will improve upon those gripes against the Gen 8. This is still a great truck it got the attention and approval of some Axial and Traxxas snobs. Great to see companies like Redcat continue to improve, I've had Redcat RCs for many years now and even have the small 1/24 Sumo which they've discontinued.

HELP ANYONE..........so when you go fast with this thing, then want to crawl slow, is there a setting you switch to on the radio or do you just rely on finger control??????????
@VanOrdCustoms
@VanOrdCustoms 5 жыл бұрын
It is a single speed truck. You need to rely on throttle control.

It can mean the difference between hitting a difficult gate and making it clean. Does it every time? Nah. But it can. It's easy to just have none as the trx 4 shows. So none is preferred. I do not have a gen 8 but I do have a gen 7 with the axle kit. I tossed the steering setup because I prefer the superior performance of soa and designed and printed my own mount. The only stock pieces left are the frame the outer links. I bought the hot racing skid before I realized there were link relocation skids available or I wouldn't have those either! I've got a wraith transmission with hot racing gears and solid spool for now. I'm going to add the dig function soon. I'm running a traxxas slipper and spur because I had one when I bought the case and gears so I didn't have buy a slipper setup. It works well. I guess at this point it's just a frankentruck with a bpc frame but it's such a beast.

I truly don’t see a time where the bump steer will cause someone to hit a gate unless they are driving quickly through it. Most people will be creeping if that close and perfectly able to compensate in their steering controls. Sounds like you have been enjoying your truck. Just like all other trucks that frequent competitions you seem to have installed a ton of upgrades. Sounds like a cool rig.

Just take the foams out of the tires they do way better
@VanOrdCustoms
@VanOrdCustoms 5 жыл бұрын
Rc tires are designed to run foams for peak performance. I would sooner recommend replacing your foams over simply removing them. A nice two stage foam would be helpful with this specific tire.

@@VanOrdCustoms this rig is light enuff and the tires are stiff enuff to run with out foams sure it would do better with some some suport inside but not foams besides its free dosent hurt anything and its killing the hyraxs hands down with out foams just try it before you say it dosent work soon ill build my new tire suport system for this size tire but i will never buy foams again

I am not knocking it at all. I understand that they will work and the truck is plenty light enough. Through my years in this hobby I have tried multiple variations from no foam to too much foam and everything in between. Currently it is my belief that a proper foam setup will yield improved performance over no foams based on my personal experiences and those of many others in the hobby. However, that being said everyone’s setup is different and if it works for you in the way that you would like it to that is all that matters. Also, free is always the right price in this hobby. 😉

redcat tire work better with out foam than with foam they always have in my opinion if you must have something inside the tire there are better choices than foam people are moving on to bigger and better tire suport systems

Do you know if the Gen 7 pro body will fit on the Gen 8?
@VanOrdCustoms

The body from the Gen 7 pro should fit on the Gen 8. You may need to do some trimming and what not for best fit.
@skirmich

Plastic gears have no place in transfer cases... The gen 8 has 2 and they cost 50dlls to change them to Metal which comes standard in every TRX-4 Sport. So you save 50 bucks with the Gen8 by going with a weaker drivetrain.
@VanOrdCustoms
@VanOrdCustoms 5 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. I completely understand your viewpoint. However, I am not so sure that’s a deal breaker. For most people. As long as you run a reasonable power plant the plastic gears should hold up quite well. If you plan on running big power I can see it being an issue.
@skirmich
@skirmich 5 жыл бұрын
@@VanOrdCustomsMain issue is that the pin for those plastic gears is not properly captured (Not enough tolerance) so In a bind situation while crawling the plastic gear can be completely stripped out on the pin hole. Redcat knows this and its the only supplier of the Metal replacement gears at a ludicrous cost.. You can fix the stripping by shimming the gear so the pin is properly seated in the plastic gear. But still... Plastic gears are cheap and its insane that replacing those elevate the cost to a TRX-4 Sport price point.

If you have a problem with the transfer case pin you can look for exocaged rc and shen rc on you tube and they show you a way to lock the pin in place for very cheap

Do you have any empirical data points that show the plastic gears are not torque rated for the vehicle or operation in question? See, I'm an engineer, specifically in the automotive industry. I couldn't imagine one of my colleagues coming up to me and saying "plastic gears? Pffft, junk. We all KNOW plastic has no place inside a 'REAL' car." It just would never happen. So without any kind of data that says these gears are inadequate or that there is indeed some kind of deflection causing problems...you're just a fanboy who doesn't like the fact that Redcat is blowing hot air up your Traxxas knickers. I have personally seen what "plastic junk" can do, and it's pretty damned impressive at times. Furthermore if you don't think there isn't something on the TRX4 worth about 50 bucks that they screwed up you're fooling yourself. But lets get real anyway...Your 50 dollar gear argument is a straw man at best. A TRX4 that gives you what the Gen8 does, costs WAY more than 50 bucks. I like them both, almost pulled the trigger on a TRX4 too but plan on see how far this Gen8 will take me. I've got other custom built tube frame crawlers that would make the TRX4 look like a department store toy if I want to get serious...including a custom build out of a RedCat Rockslide that can twist 90* at will, so I really don't care either way. It just frosts my mug when people make some half cocked ignorant straw man argument in an attempt to discredit what is the hobby's biggest bomb drop in a long time. No need. You can be the person who shakes the man's hand and says congrats, or the small person who sits in the corner trying to make fun of their accomplishment to make yourself feel better. Right now, you aint shakin any hands...
