Watching this a year and a half later and your point-of-failure predictions have all come true. And the five B's (bump-steer, bad bearings, belly bump) are defacto talking points. Even so, I bought the Gen8 PACK and I like it. There are owners who insist that anyone who breaks this truck is abusive, while others report catastrophic damage crawling the kitchen floor. I will say that no one should drive without first putting on a skidplate to protect the servo horn, and the Panhard mount at the axle must be reinforced. The other three brackets will probably rip out too (SSD has a solution). Suffice to say RedCat is close. Maybe the Gen9. Thanks for the walk-thru.

We haven’t even had these trucks under stress on rocks yet. Been anticipating this review and Harley delivered. Having recently picked up the FTX Outback ll Fury it was interesting to see the Redcat in detail. There are many similarities in the basic design and hardware between the two. Same links, drive shafts, servo horn and motor for example. I've not forensically examined the vlog or the rig but its fair to say this shares some DNA and is more than likely manufactured in the same place. My experience of the Outback has been good and I'm guessing the Redcat will deliver comparatively with it and other rtr's and looks mint.

I'm not saying portal axles are a bad thing. I'm expecting them to become the norm in crawlers going forward. But I think it's interesting in that it generally flies in the face of going scale as most vehicles in real life don't have them. Guess it's a trade off we're making for performance.

This is very true, they are not scale in most all applications. People seem to overlook that often but I’m very much on your side of the fence when it comes to that. I don’t think they’re right for every application.

Ron Underwood yes bro wow your bringing me back man! I can still smell it like if it was yesterday! It was a Nisan Diesel not much HP but it had great torque because my dad used to pull out many stumps with it and I remember one time he used to have a big dump truck for his home improvement business and one of his workers got it stuck in the mud of the property of a new construction site it just sank into the ground like if it was quicksand because of the weight and my dad used the Scout to pull that bitch out and it did it without any problems or stressing out the engine! I remember it like if it was yesterday and I remember my dad going outside walking over to the front hubs turning the knob on them to lock up the front DIFFs before pulling it out. My dad also used it to go hunting and take it in the woods because he had no ATVs at the time and in the summer take the top off and take my family to the beach on Sundays . He had his customized with special lights and diamond plate door steps and fender flares and it had an air compressor in it for air horn and to fill up tires . I think this is why I have my GMC DENALI Duramax Diesel all hooked up like he did to his Scout? It was much harder those days because things had to be custom hand built unlike today with bolt on parts available for my truck! His Scout2 had two styles of life because it was refurbished once by him. There’s was the 80’s style and then the early 90’s style before it rusted away and was taken away! Engine always ran and would have lasted until today guaranteed that bitch can not be killed ! I want to make 2 replicas 2 styles of my dads truck ! 80s time and early 90s time this is why I need clear bodies for it. I have this truck in my head I can see it and still remember the smell 80s and 90s. There are many more memories but now you can see how special this new Gen 8 will be for me . I will have a few of them. Next E-word crawler I want is one like my truck 2011 GMC 2500 Duramax Denali . Do you know of any kits out there with this Body? I’ll buy it today!
@ronunderwood57716 жыл бұрын
@@BOTAJELL Cannot help you on the body. I have never done any RC. I clicked to this site when I saw the Scout picture. I sold these new back in the day. Never did sell a diesel tho. IMHO the Scout was one tough unit. The gas V-345 approx 6.0L had gobs of low end torque. The auto trans was a Chrysler 727 torque flight. I beat the snot out of a couple of these and they just wouldn't die. Used a 4 cyl 196, approx 4L to go whitewater kayaking for several years. Had a posi rear and the close ratio 4 spd. Drop the TC into low and it went anywhere i needed to go. On one trip to the Gauley river in W Va heavy rain washed out the shuttle road while we were on the river. Rafters stuck there, other kayakers stuck there, buses held up. A zoo. Topo map showed remnants of a logging trail going the other direction. Figured WTH and headed off, 6 kayaks on the roof and six people inside. About 5 miles at 2 to 10 mph but we made it. Biggest obstacle was a K5 Blazer that had gotton hung trying to cross a washed out culvert. His angle of approach wasn't steep enough. Neither was angle of departure. He was basically hung up on his frt and rr bumpers. I was able to ooze around and not drop off the right shoulder. Couldn't help him because nobody had any straps or chains. Guess he got out eventually. I think I am going to buy the orange one just because it is a Scout. I had 3, orange, blue (the 4 cyl) and brown. BTW look up Sherman Balch. He factory raced a scout in the late 80's. Good luck with your builds!

Unlike a smooth bottom that glides right over the objects.

It's a very personal thing but for someone who's looking for a first crawler an SCX10ii or a TRX4 is a better option. The cheapest versions of those are only $30 more. For someone who already owns an SCX10ii or a TRX4, the Gen8 doesn't of much else and a leafsprung truck or something on smaller tires (Trailfinder2 is the obvious option here) would be a more interesting option. But this truck will probably sell well. Saving a few bucks and getting some minor problems in trade doesn't bother most, if it did everyone would be driving a VS4-10.

Nice review. I have time on the same portal axle setup (Gen 7 w/beta portals) and it has held up fine. I have had no issues with them. So I don't for see any problems soon. So many of the statements were "what ifs", or "could be" statements. Didn't mean the design was bad or wrong, just insight to be mindful of maintenance on your rig. As for the bulge, that is a Dad Bod..... So don't knock it.. LOL. Actually that does stink to see that. At $300 this rig gives you a great place to start. Can't count how many folks buy an almost $500 TRX4 to strip it down of almost everything on the rig to replace it with comp series components. What a waste of money paying $200 more for a spot to say you own a Traxxass. I think in a real "non-biased" test, people would be surprised. Ordering mine soon. I need a 15th rig....

No one ever says what no,da of batteries I can use with it. What is the minimun C rating on Lipos for it?
@HarleyDesignsInc6 жыл бұрын
C rating and capacity are a function of the output. Even a 20c 5000mah pack would do fine.
@puzzleluvr6 жыл бұрын
It was recommended to use a 2s lipo right out of the box. A 5000 mAh 20C should be plenty for the stock setup.

I bet there was a huge amount of buyer's remorse for Gen8 owners when the TRX-4 Sport was released.

Ok, I just have to ask, what are MOD1 gears? I have seen these types of gears mentioned in several model videos. What does MOD1 mean in relation to "regular " gears? I am also sure that I have even heard mention of MOD2 gears.
@odomandr6 жыл бұрын
Mod 1 describes the pitch of the teeth aka the depth of the gear. Axial started with 48p then moved to 32p. Mod 1 is deeper than 48p
@daver18qc6 жыл бұрын
That is a "Metric" pitch value. MOD1 or MODULE 1 gears have bigger teeths than 32 pitch gears, which are similar to 0,8 MOD and 48p gears are similar to 0,6 MOD gears. The biggest i've seen in a RC was MOD 1.5 gears.

So this for 300 of traxxas trx4 for 350?? Im getting one now which one

TRX I would say.

hats off to redcat but I think the trx4 sport is still a better option

Crawl Hard rc I agree, especially considering my LHS sells the sport for the same price as this Redcat. Now seeing the guts of this truck spilled it’s nowhere near as well built as the TRX-4 in my opinion.

can't beleive your Lhs sells the sport for the same price. that's awesome

Crawl Hard rc my LHS has the best prices I’ve found for Traxxas vehicles. Parts and accessories are average price though.

We've definitely got the same view on the fender design, the fronts should have just been made to more closely mimic the rears. I noticed they snuck a little Redcat logo right where I'd Dremel it away to make it look better. That being said, great review, decent budget rig, but glad I just (yesterday, in fact!) added a TRX-4 Defender to my stable... Keep the rubber side down!

Can other bodies fit this chassis
@HarleyDesignsInc6 жыл бұрын
You’ll need to switch to the standard body posts at that time.

Thanks for the detailed review. I like the body but want one I can paint and I'm not sure about the rest of the Chassis. I've already seen it on the trail last Tuesday and I'm not very impressed with the performance. I will have to see how much upgradeable parts will help the performance before I consider getting one. I guess only time will tell for me. Thanks again. Have a great New Year.

Redcat is doing stuff none else is

As someone who has been in the crawling world for over a decade the biggest fail here is in the marketing. This is not a upgraded gen 7 with a cool body. It's a new truck and should have got a new name to get away from the bad thoughts of the gen 7. Could have been the new Redcat "Super Scout" Thanks for the good breakdown of the good and bad stuff.

Nobody likes a bulge in the wrong spot... Also, the diff cover has a nasty sharp catch point too by the ring gear area.
