Today's guest is the incredible Redd Volkaert and his two Nacho-Caster guitars. These are detailed and accurate replicas of the very first Fender Telecasters from the early 1950's and are made by Nacho Banos in Valencia, Spain. Nacho also wrote the definitive book on the early Telecasters, "The Blackguard"
Redd Volkaert has played with an incredible list of country stars, including Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, Bill Monroe, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, Ray Price and many, many more.

Redd is a Super Nice man,& always quick witted and funny. He was kind enough to allow myself and my best friend to sit in with his band for a couple of songs back in 2000. First time I heard him was in 97’ at a small club called “Barbara’s” in Printers Alley in Nville.I was walking down the alley and someone had opened the door to the club and I heard someone just SMOKIN on a Tele.Went in and it was Redd. He blew me away.I didn’t want him to stop playing.Monster Monster guitar player and a fine person as well.

I saw Redd twice in my lifetime. The first time I saw him, he was backing Merle Haggard in a triple bill with Willie Nelson and Ray Price in Columbia, Maryland. The second time was a show with his band at the Continental Club in Austin, Texas.

Redd is the greatest guy to hang with - as well as being an incredibly talented guitar player. I flew him out to Los Angeles so as we could film with him for our Telecaster movie - and we spent a couple of great days together up at Seymour Duncan’s facility near Santa Barbara. When it comes to Telecasters ... Redd’s the best.

Hey if you ever get the chance, ask Redd how many Tele's (from various makers including Fender) he owns. I don't think I've ever seen him play the same one twice! I'd guess he must have several hundred!! Whatever the real number is, it has to be formidable. He must have a huge room to store them all in! Thx for doing this. It's always great to listen to Redd. 👍 😀

When Redd came to Nashville, it was my honor to be working at the Broken Spoke hosting a Talent Show every Thursday and a Songwriter's Night every Sunday. Redd would sit in and "jam" with band and soon he would "sub" with the band and soon he was identified as a Great player and doors seem to open up for Redd. His talents are simply amazing and a "nice guy" as well. It was my pleasure to meet him and follow his career. Dale Burie, The Broken Spoke Saloon and Songwriters' Cafe from the 90's.

I got to attend a clinic he did at the Kansas City folk alliance some years back. It was magical. I knew blues pretty well at the time but struggled trying to solo in country. I had taken my MIM 72 reissue thinline tele with me and after the clinic some old boy from Texas that also attended the clinic came up and said he really liked my guitar. We got to talking about picking and I played him some Albert King style licks and some Kansas City jazzy blues licks and he was impressed. I told him blues comes natural to me but I don't know how to get my solos to sound country. He said hell you know all the minor pentatonic positions just play the major pentatonic and I didn't know what he was on about. He showed me how to slide down and make my pinky the root in position one. Instantly it clicked and I started playing that country twang I had been searching for years to try and get. Its been some years now and I'm still trying to learn more chicken pickin its become an addiction. If it wasn't for that clinic watching this man and getting to talk with that random stranger from Texas, I would have never even started.

Redd is a great example of original style picking from the early years of guitar playing. But remember this….. Let’s not forget that Leo Fender, George Fullerton and crew got it right the first time. Nacho or no Nachos, it’s all in the guitarist’s mind of exact preference. I have a three telecasters, but they’re not Leo’s era. I had to modify it get the exact tone through trials and errors. But finally I got it. I have a telecaster that once belonged to Kenny Vaughn. And yeah, man. It’s a great great guitar. Love the video, and keep’em flowing……👍🇮🇪
