Resilience, and strength training go hand-in-hand. You simply cannot be strong in body, mind, and lifestyle if your habits fall apart with the slightest animosity. Yet despite the importance of mental and physical toughness, many ideas in our fitness culture that promote perfection and “optimization “promote vary fragility that can hold you back.

The current gym culture is all about looking good. I played rugby for many years, and in the modern game the average is to have around 30% of your squad out injured at any time. Such are the rigours of the game. The game is therefore built around functional strength and fitness and even then you get injured. By far the toughest competitors I've met are those who come from either farming or building sites. These guys work and lift all day every day. Their strength is natural and their stamina beats anyone who goes to the gym.

I read Breaking BUDS a few years back-the author (now a SEAL), wrote that most guys are like 160-170 lbs. who were just able to get by on very little sleep, and worked hard every day. They aren’t the bodybuilder guys people see on tv/movies.

The reality is a 220lb bodybuilder physique is tough to oxygenate even if they have low body fat - the heart must work harder to pump blood to a larger physique. An athletic physique within the constraints your frame can handle optimally is best for such careers

The more rounded you are...cross training modalities on an upward spiral. Grip strength. Strength endurance. Getting up off the floor.. as a movement pattern to train. Original resets-crawling/head nods, vestibular training. Calisthenics as a baseline foundation. Add the Kettlebell swing, which essentially is an endurance deadlift pattern.Heavy club training like the Shield Cast and absolutely some loaded circle movements. Above all have fun. I regularly train while having a beer. Well...I put it down...😄

The current global culture promotes fragility in general, not just in fitness.

Did the snatchtest once at a RKC clinic. Did it without practice, while a lot of big trained guys failed. Not that I was so awesome, more they were not adaptable enough (and their arms were too big/heavy).

The difference between effective and optimal is irrelevant for 80%, or more, of the population.
