In this video, we explore the Deflect Down, Parry, and Push with Closed Hand sequence, which follows the transition from Spread Arms Like a Fan and the Overhand Circle. This set of movements is repeated in the Third Section of the Yang Style Long Form, making it a vital part of Tai Chi practice.
This video serves as a supplemental review for students who have learned these movements in class, helping them to reinforce their understanding of the technique.
About the Form:
The Yang Style Long Form has evolved through many variations. This particular form was taught by Zhu Chu Fang (朱楚方) (1913-1988), who studied directly under Chen Wei Ming and Yang Cheng Fu. While similar to the version taught by the Yang Family today, it places special emphasis on coordinating the rising and sinking of the legs and arms. This emphasis on up-and-down movement naturally supports a deep, rhythmic breathing that promotes a profound sense of relaxation.
