The typical purpose of it is to be creative. Some posts have a tag of ‘serious answers first’, which means they don’t know what it’s actually supposed to be and want to. For those posts, once someone correctly sleuths the origin, that answer gets pinned by the mods and then it’s just creativity fun.

- dolphin: this is likely an ice-skater yeah. The arms are probably either crossed on the chest so it isn't visible in profile, or out with one towards the "back" and other not visible in profile (would explain the shape of the hair clearly having something non-hair below the hair-part of that blob).; I only realized after watching this I should write down my guesses before seeing the answers. - tentacle monster: Looks like it is meant to be a monkey to me. With arms in an egyptian dance pose. - ninja turtle: why are people even bothering? This is very obviously just a circular shape someone broke and squished together the sides until it bent. You can tell by looking at the metal (particularly the clasp connecting both ends together is skewed) that it's bent, not shaped/manufactured that way. - among us: saw answer too quickly; among us - butterfly with arms: butterfly of some sort; apparently it is ballet slippers. - "gengar": not at all. But it is non-human. Looks like something standing on 2 legs, with a tail, 2 big fox ears, and tuft of hair or ribbon on top. nose and arms forward. Sooo... considering we know from OP it is meant to be a pokemon, maybe it's that new grass-cat starter pokemon? - noclue: looks like a boat next to a tropical island, to me. You see the obvious boat shape on the left, and the obvious palm-tree shape to the right, and then space for the tiny islands sand at bottom.; The titanic version kinda works too, but not the top-tentacle ontop of the boat. - marge simpson: Clearly meant to be a beard, so looks more to me like santa-clause, cut off before the hat. So you have a santa-hat shaped cookie-cutter too?; Although then that image of leprauchauns makes more sense I guess, making the ears be a hat instead of ears. - mario mario: looks like a nondescript man with a bag and hat (with a forward-facing brim)?; The guy mentioning santa sounds about right though, turns out it wasn't the kind of hat I thought. - slug with crown: again another one that has clearly been bent out of shape. As noticeable looking at the joint.; I did like the toothbrush idea though :p - poorly/forcedly drawn bird: Either a cat with a too-long tail that's out-of-proportions due to weird perspectives in the actual reference image, OR a queen made to look like a hag, with a crooked nose (snow white's mom?).; huh, someone made it a king instead, despite the crown only having 2 peaks. Odd. But same train of thought. - haunter+ditto: Would guess a cartoonish ghost, but then I noticed it has legs. And more than 2 of them at that. No, more likely it is angled incorrectly, and 90 degrees counter-clockwise we see a birb with a long tail, and 2 tiny nubs as wings out either side. Or wait, no, 90 degrees clockwise we see that it is obviously a with-hat, with a matching witch attached below it. The corrugated portion is her neck, probably corrugated to imply it is not beheaded and instead the likeness grows fuzzy at that point until we can't see any more. Fairly sure witch is right; Someone got the witch idea too, though they solved the odd corrugated shape as hair instead. ps: to answer OP's question, people do this by *GASP* _drawing the images they insert by themselves!_ Meaning they have the outline and come up with some depiction of the thing they want that forcefully follows those contours (and even then you usually see them not managing it perfectly). That is how they get them to fit well. - lever-gronk that suddenly is allowed a halo outside the confines: bunny running towards or away from viewer? Unsure if the odd thing to the right is their front foot, or a fluffy tail. At the very least I am fairly sure the left part is meant to be the ears ontop; no good answers here.
