My wife and I have been binge watching your videos. Have Section hiked about 1,400 miles of The AT and really love re-hiking the sections with you. Love the way you hike. For speed hikers, the current record is • Karl Meltzer - On September 18, 2016 Karl Meltzer completed his ASSISTED thru hike in 45 days 22 hours and 38 minutes HIKE YOUR OWN HIKE and it is proving awesome. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure.

sassafras tree; used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes, used to make root beer, teas, etc.

I camped all the time as a child and we always made it a point to make sassafras tea with the roots. So easy to ID and very common here in Ohio.

That rock in the pack is the meanest trick in the book. Maybe Trey needs to carry that rock to Katahdin for you?? Good for you for hauling those rocks and for being so good natured about it all. Keep on keepin' on. Love the pack name: Hotdog.

The rock in the pack is an old Boy Scout trick. The Scouts would do it to the fat kid in the group or the one they didn't like. In this case, tho, I think it was all in fun.

That rock in the backpack is classic! I did the same thing to a buddy of mine on the pct. When he found it I thought he would KILL me, but today it's a source of a good laugh! J.T. from Oregon

That pack rock is f'in hilarious. After much of your day-to-day hike has been forgotten through time you will always remember your first day in The Smokies. Hot Dog may be a good trail name. My two cents are for "The Rock".

sassafras is a tree if you boil the roots it taste kind of like a rootbeer without the bubbles. The leaves are used to make filet mixed the ground-up sassafras leaf with the ground up bay leaf and you have filet. We actually have sassafras trees in Louisiana they grow tall and have three finger leaves.

Here you are from Wiki (used my Google-foo for you): Sassafras is a genus of three extant and one extinct species of deciduous trees in the family Lauraceae, native to eastern North America and eastern Asia.[1][2][3] The genus is distinguished by its aromatic properties, which have made the tree useful to humans. Basically, you use it to make root beer. If you smell the root, it smells like root beer. Very easy to identify because it has three diferent shaped leaves on it--I remember my father showing me this all the time when we were hunting and hiking in the mountains of Virginia. Again from wiki: The species are unusual in having three distinct leaf patterns on the same plant: unlobed oval, bilobed (mitten-shaped), and trilobed (three-pronged); the leaves are hardly ever five-lobed.
