Alison has been my favorite vocalist since I was 12. I’m now 42 and lost my little brother suddenly last October at 38. I’ve always loved this song, but it takes on a whole new meaning when you’re begging to just get through another month so you can “start again” when it comes to trying to be a normal person in the midst of grief.

Thank you so much. Our dad just suffered a massive heart attack today and is close to being with my baby brother again, which is why I came back to this song and saw your comment. It’s been a rough couple of Decembers, for sure. 💔

Very sorry for your profound loss. I find this helpful in grieving: "Grief is just love with no place to go." Hope your New Year is full of love. Celebrate your brother and yourself amidst the grief. Alisons angelic voice and words here hopefully help. She gets me through lots.

Writers are Gordie Sampson and Fred Lavery both Cape Breton raised Nova Scotians as is Natalie herself. Maritime Canada is a rich source of fiddle music rooted in both Irish and French folk music. I wish composers were automatically attributed in every KZbin clip.

And of course the tune its self was written by Neil Gow, from Dunkeld in Scotland in the 18th Century. Its called "Neil Gow's Lament for the death of his Second Wife" , Alisons singing and Natalies Playing (with the band) just make it there own and take it to another level. Awesome,

So many lessons from Alison...beyond music. Just watching her performances with others, listening to other professionals talk about her, seeing the number of professionals who want her, reading articles and comments from ordinary people--she is an incredible person. I'm watching her watch Natalie....full appreciation. For Natalie's story to happen, it means that when she met Alison at the workshop, Alison didn't competitively size up Natalie and say something like "I sing too". We need to implement a class in our school curriculums and call it "Alison 101".

+Jeff Alfresco I had not seen this until today either Jeff. Somebody uploaded it today in poor and distorted quality but that video was linked to a longer one of Natalie MacMaster. (Which unfortunately doesn't show up in searches for Alison Krauss). Though I enjoy Breton fiddle myself, I don't think everybody does. For convenience sake I therefor cut the Alison part to upload separately. All credit though for this being up on youtube in the first place go to the uploader oneloveinus. :-)

This is one of my fav tunes, not overdone, Alison knows how to let a phrase breathe and give the song its own life. Natalie of course is just a phenomenal fiddle player and does Canada 🇨🇦 proud.
