I think Mario should have a new moveset while Dr. Mario be his own character and retain classic Mario's moveset incase people prefer classic Mario's moveset.

If Smash 6 ever happens I hope they remake/revamp some characters movesets to make them feel more modernized. Like I'd definitely prefer playing a Mario that uses abilities from his recent adventures rather than ones that would make a outdated moveset

For sure, I completely agree! It'd be interesting to see the series have a soft-reboot of sorts, perhaps with a slimmed down roster to focus on breathing new life into some of the older characters.

I feel like after Ultimate that's kinda what Smash 6 has to be. Look at other series like Monster Hunter, for example, whenever they do their "greatest hits/everybody's here" game (MH Generations) it's always followed by a huge new shake up game that reimagines the series (World, Rise).

Funny you should say that, since I just started working on another one 👀 Haha yeah at the time I made this moveset I'd just finished playing through Odyssey, so it was fresh on my mind. Definitely up there as one of my favourite Mario games but I think Sunshine will always be #1 for me!

@@Fobb I replayed sunshine a few months ago. It’s definitely a game with personality and memorabilia. The characters and settings are great. But ngl, the controls felt slippery and it got me killed a little bit. Really short game too. Great game though. It’s up there. Also, looking forward to it. 🍿

A Concept for Mario I had was adding a special property to his Shield where it would act or symbolise crouching in his games. This could lead to the inclusion of more of his move set form his games like the long jump which would be preformed by holding shield and jump moving forward or backwards depending on what way Marios facing. This could have a hit box making it a good out of shield option and could be done in the air for a better horizontal recovery. Holding shield and pressing jump with the stick up Mario could preform a summersault or spin jump for greater horizontal recovery and further extension of combos. I also see the possibility to add the dive which would act like an air dodge that keeps you moving and doesn’t put you in to free fall, the ground pound and other moves using this one simple mechanics though I don’t know how those moves would work yet. This can be seen as more of a addition to the move set we have in game that portrays Mario’s athletic qualities. While still being simple to play if your getting in to smash for the first time.

I think you focused a little too much on Odyssey with the references. It's a good game, but it's also just one game, out of Mario's hundreds. Having the side special, down special, dash attack, smash attacks and final smash all be based on one game makes it feel like the moveset's just trying to go for what's recent instead of representing Mario as a whole. Imo there is no better Final Smash for Mario than the Mega Mushroom. It's big, flashy and it's been a recurring element of the series since New Super Mario Bros. As for his smash attacks, having him use a hammer akin to Paper Mario or Mario And Luigi would be a good fit; it's his signature move in those games after all. On another note, it's important to keep in mind that Mario is meant to be the default jack of all traits character for beginners. He's the one everybody is most familiar with, so it's his role to teach the basic mechanics of the game. In that context, I feel like the FLUDD Up Special you went doesn't convey the idea of recoveries as intuitively as the current one. It works, but feels a little more complicated than it should be. I don't think it's necessary to really keep FLUDD in his moveset anyway given it's only important to one game, or if you really want to still use it, you could have it in place of the groundpound since, while very iconic, it's already represented by Bowser and Yoshi (who were the ones to actually pioneer that move in Mario 3 and Yoshi's Island respectively)... or you could give it to Wario.... seriously why doesn't Wario have a groundpound in Smash already--

That's fair, when I was making this moveset I'd recently finished playing through Odyssey for the first time so it was fresh on my mind and definitely had a big influence here. If I were to redo it now, there are probably a few things I'd do differently to represent a broader range of games 👌

@@Fobb Imagine if they just added a Mario for every mainline Mario game... 64 Mario, Galaxy Mario, Odyessey Mario, Sunshine Mario... TOO MANY MARIOS for sure, but it would be funny! XD Honestly Mario probably has more moveset potential than any character in Smash history, since every single game has its own gimmick.

I do like the use of Cappy from Odyssey although, as a professional Super Mario Odyssey speedrunner, I am slightly biased. Slightly niche as well but I think Mario should be able to kick off walls if he doesn't already. PS: please do Hero next and remove anything luck based about him, so that I know what is going on :Nice:

These are great, but I'd like to see the cape return in some form as well as some other series in place of some of the Odyssey/3D stuff. It would be cool to see the Tanooki, Frog, or Shell suits. Maybe a special that randomly picks one of the suit attacks? (Like Pac-Man's fruit picker but temporarily grants cape twirl, fire ball, hammer, tail attack, shell slide, boulder, spring, etc.)

I have a (quite gimmicky) idea for mario. What if his neutral special changes the power ups he has, changing his up, side, and down special. there could be the fire and ice flower for his side specials, cape feather and propellar muchroom for his up special, and fludd or blue shell for his down special. this puts him in the same boat as dlc characters, while still feeling like him. also, His down air could be the ground pound, and his tilts could be cappy, still with the ability to bounce.

Final smash where Mario uses the super star, and is always at top speed with his arms out like in SMB3. To actually use it just ooga booga into your opponent and send them flying up and falling upside down with a cool little hit animation.

I have a super ambitious idea for Fludd that would include all 4 nozzles, all of which would require it to be charged first. *Hover nozzle*: Mario would dawn the water jet pack and hover back and forth for a few seconds and the height at which he hovers depends on how high he is when he starts. This would act similarly to Peach’s float as Mario would be able to jump out of it at any time, attack, or use special moves. The catch is if Mario does cancel it early then he can’t hover again until he charges it again (this will be a reoccurring theme with Fludd). *Rocket nozzle*: Using the stored water, Mario shoots into the sky with a hitbox on his way up. But if he’s hit while ascending then he’s put into free fall. If not, then he’ll be able to act out of it. *Turbo nozzle*: Mario blasts forwards at high speed, launching opponents away if he slams into them. If he doesn’t hit anyone then he’ll bonk when reaching the ledge (same thing happens if the opponent shields). Mario can jump while in this state but it’ll only be enough to carry him offstage. When used in the air, Mario will slowly fall at a shallow angle in the direction he’s facing. Unlike the grounded version, he won’t have a hitbox. But he’ll be able to jump just like the grounded version if he can. If Mario tries to turn around, he’ll stop completing on the ground and can act immediately and stop dashing while retaining momentum in the air while slowing down. If hit at all while dashing he stops and will have to recharge Fludd.

I feel like the moveset refrences to much 3D games but the moveset sounds super fun! I would've personally made the final smash make mario use multiple power ups combo style.

Couple complaints about this moveset remake. First off, F.L.U.D.D was not primarily used as a jetpack in Mario sunshine. that was just one of its alternate nozzles. it was mainly used to solve physics based puzzles and clean up the island using the hose nozzle, which is why the down special I think is fine. the second is the down special you made. I never really thought of the ground pound as a fairly special move. and if you are making moves literally called "Special attacks", I think they need to be more than just a butt slam. And the reason i am fine with Yoshi having it is because in most of his games, he only has three main attacks, throwing, his tongue, and ground pounding. so Yoshi is fine. and Bowser didn't really have many playable appearences, but in most of his bosses, he usually uses a Ground pound attack. Other than that though, great vid! might consider subbing.

I dont see him using Cappy as is side special since it wont work, but i prefer the side special to be him using his iconic weapon from the RPG series the Hammer and the move should be similar to how he uses it from the 1st 2 Paper Mario titles in which there will be a timer that has 3 lightless lights and the sound effect should be exactly from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and IF you release the B button when all 3 lights are on you do like 30-40% damage and good knockback, and as for his down special, they should bring back his Mario Tornado and unlike Luigi's Cyclone, it will not suck in opponents and for the air to replace it, i prefer to use his shoes to jump on them and deal 10%.

In this case... I disagree. Making Mario's moveset revolve around Cappy would just make it even more dated. Cappy likely isn't going to appear in every future Mario game, since that was Odyssey's gimmick. Having side special, up and down smash, AND final smash all revolving around Cappy specifically is TOO modern, and leaves behind more of Mario's past renditions. I'd rather his moveset be updated, not entirely replaced... get the best of BOTH worlds. Side Special should be Cappy. When thrown he flies forwards like you said in the video, stalling in the air briefly before coming back. BUT instead of replacing down special with the ground pound, you would do the dive by using side special while Cappy is already out. His down air could be replaced with the ground pound instead, but could be cancelled with the side special for mix-ups. I like the idea of Cappy still being able to reflect projectiles though, to replace the function of his cape. Dash attack is fine the way it is, and is iconic in its own right. Its actually based on the slide-kick from Super Mario 64, and Mario also does similar slides in some of the sports games, as well as the more recent first Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle game. His down smash is also one of my favorite moves he has, with its new animation in Ultimate it feels normal while still fitting Mario's character (its also a reference to the Sweep Kick from 64, as well as possibly the cover art for a specific Mario dancing game). Up Smash could be cooler though, but using Cappy would be a little too gimmicky imo... perhaps the Spin Attack from Mario Galaxy? Up Special is as iconic as it gets, because its a direct reference to the original Mario games, Mario's iconic jump, and him collecting coins by punching blocks. FLUDD should stay as his down special (however, if they brought back custom moves like in Smash 4 it would be cool if the hover or rocket nozzles were one of the options). And unpopular opinon... I'm glad his turning-giant taunt is gone. Its slow, leaves him hugely open to attack, and doesn't even make sense because there's no mushroom involved and he shouldn't be able to simply turn big on command. Sure it's classic to an extent, but I really was never fond of it. I prefer the faster taunts and legit actually like the thumbs-up better. Even though Mario's never done that before, the way he does the taunt feels very much like something Mario would do. Mario's victory animations could definitely use some updates though. They're very generic, and have barely changed throughout the series, making them less interesting than most of the newer characters. What I would really like to see though, is Mario being able to do his in-game tricks in Smash, like the long jump, backflip, wall slide, and backwards somersault, using entirely just the actual control stick movements outside of traditional Smash gameplay. Like, to long jump you would run, tilt down on the control stick to crouch, and then tilt the control stick up/press the jump button to do the long jump, and Mario could follow up with an aerial attack or something. Or jump out of a crouch to do a backflip to gain more height in a jump. (Anyways, please don't hate me or yell at me for sharing my opinions).

If I had to redesign Mario's moveset, it would be the following (I'm only covering the specials): Neutral Special: Fireball. Keep it as it is. Side Special: Racoon Leaf. Mario will use the Racoon Leaf to dash forwards while spinning his tail to damage his opponents, having a multihit effect. Up Special: Super Jump Punch. Keep it as it is. Down Special: Spin Attack. It will work as it did in Galaxy. Using it in the air will give Mario an upward boost.

I think for Mario's neutral air, he can twirl around with his cape as a reference to Super Mario World. That way, there can still be a reference to his cape.

It all works except his final smash. I always figured it referenced Fire Wall from Super Mario RPG. Speaking of that game each character has triple finishers. Perhaps Mario could summon Geno and Mallow for a triple finish.

Can you do Samus next. I feel that she really needs a redesign after all the Metroid games that have came out. Here are my ideas on what I would change. she should be faster and less floaty similarly to zero suit samus, she would also be able to enter morph ball by crawling and her design would also be based on Metroid dread. her jab would be based of her counter animation during the X chozo warrior fight from Metroid Dread (2 horizontal cannon swings with a close range blast to finish) Her forward tilt should remain as a roundhouse kick as a reference to one of her counters in other m, up tilt should be the basic counter swing from Metroid Dread, down tilt should be a two part attack similar to the Belmonts (tap down tilt ounce = slide attack, tap down tilt during slide = kick flip based of the counter attack during slide from Metroid Dread) Her dash attack would be here running counter swing from Metroid dread Up smash would be the same but samus would fire energy bursts from her cannon instead of explosions, her forward smash will also be the same but she will fire an energy burst instead of an explosion, down smash would be a quick cannon energy burst from front to back (similar to mii gunners down smash) Samus will fire her grapple beam for her grab and grab the opponent with her left hand and knee them for her pommel, her forward throw would be a counter swing ending with a power blast, her back throw would be a backward spinging throw similar to Mario and Banjos back throws (the is a reference to one of samus counters from other m) for her down throw samus will slam the opponent on the ground and fire a charge blast into them (this is a reference to one of her counters from other m) her up throw will remain the same with Samus launching her opponents into the air with her arm cannon neutral air would be screw attack (would work similar to sephiroths neutral air) forward air would be samus Ariel counter from Metroid dread, back air would be a quick horizontal cannon swing behind her, her up air would be an Ariel flip kick (similar to zero suit samus up air) her neutral special would work kind of similar to foxes laser (but slower and can be charged for a charge shot) her up special would be shine spark from Metroid dread (her suit will charge up with energy and she will propel her self in any 4 directions, it would work Similar to foxes up special but with more range, more staring and ending lag, and super armor during the attack) SPOILERS Her final smash would be samus’s suit transforming into the Metroid suit and firing her zero laser (would pretty much be the same final smash she has now but she is wearing the Metroid suit)

Thanks for watching! Quite a few people have suggested Samus now, so I'd definitely like to try redesigning her at some point. Personally, I'm not too familiar with the Metroid series as a whole though, so I'd like to play some of its games to provide some context before making a moveset. However, if I do eventually give it a shot, I'll definitely refer to some of the ideas that you've posted here - thanks for going into so much depth!

I loved the new Up B involving F.L.U.D.D., but I'd don't replace Mario Finale, it's a standard move but it's okay for me. My ideas are: *Side B:* Cappy Throw. If you use a Tilt input, Mario will make a Spin Throw that can deflect projectiles. If you use a Smash Attack input, Mario will throw Cappy like a boomerang. *Forward Throw:* Mario hits the opponent with a hammer, making a reference to Donkey Kong, Mario & Luigi Saga and Super Mario Maker. *Down Throw:* Uses the Ground Pound just like Luigi's Down Throw. *Final Smash:* I'd keep Mario Finale, but Mario should to transform into Fire Mario before performing the attack. About aesthetics, I think one of Mario's victory screens should to involve Cappy. Also, I think he should to have palettes based on his colors from the first Super Mario Bros (red overalls, mustard shirt and yellow gloves), Super Mario Bros 3 (Red shirt and shoes, and black overalls) and his "classic outfit" (blue shirt and red overalls)

Glad to hear it 👌 At first I wasn't completely sure about leaning into Cappy/Mario Odyssey as much as I did, but the idea grew on me over time -- it'd definitely help Mario to feel a lot more unique than he does at the moment!

I'm kind of disappointed that you didn't mention the Mario Spin attack from Mario Galaxy. Why not use that move as his Down Air and use his Spin Attack as his Down B. I don't know just reference the Spin Attack! The new Up B is a great idea, but I would also have it where in the ground his Up B is the same as his old Down Special, but in the air is where he can use his new Up Special you mentioned. For his Final Smash, I would probably give him his Super Star transformation. And I have an idea for his Neutral Special where instead of just the Fire Ball, he can select his power-ups to mention some Mario games where you can select any power-up before beginning the level. Here's all of the power-ups, you can select, Fire Flower, Ice Flower, Super Leaf, Boomerang Flower, and Super Bell (Cat Mario). And I guess the Bubble Flower.

For me, I would probably make Mario's moveset focused on being a Rushdown fighter, like the Long Jump/dive as a side B and Cappy as the Neutral B so you can do the Cappy, Dive, Bounce, Dive

Just switch the hat throw & coin jump! That makes a TASTY & unique up smash & the up throw could easily be throwing cappy up for a meh strength throw that combos at low%

Nice moveset i also made my own redesign mario moveset and it is alot like yours except that i made his down special the galaxy spin from super mario galaxy and I made the ground pound his down aerial.

Those are pretty good move sets for Mario but I think Mario's dash attack should be rolling and do Multi-hits like sonic's dash attack from brawl Mario's forward smash should be his hammer Mario's down smash and neutral air should be his star spin overall those are good move sets for Mario and Mario's final smash that you change is good and to let you know the Mario finale Mario's final smash reference ultra flames from super Mario RPG legend of the seven stars just to let you know.

I feel like most people want cappy, but it seems like way too much. I think the hammer fits well, and I like what they did with F.L.U.D.D.

Would it be ok if you decloned Zelda next? Those three goddess spells have no place being in her moveset anymore. Not only that but the light arrows (which were removed) were the most accurate part of her moveset.

Personally, I’m not really a fan. You don’t really have an underlying design theme you want to incorporate into this redesign. You already kind of dismiss that Mario is supposed to be an easy to understand, jack of all trades, brawler.

Here’s an unpopular opinion: Rather than having his Side Special being Cappy, and his Up Special being the super jump punch, I think all his specials should stick to a consistent order (don’t get me wrong, I love Odyssey). His Neutral Special Fireball came from Super Mario Bros, the first Mario game on the NES, Side Special Cape came from Super Mario World, the first Mario game on the SNES, and his Down Special F.L.U.D.D came from Super Mario Sunshine, the first Mario game on the Gamecube, so his Up Special would the Wing Cap be from Super Mario 64, the first Mario game on the N64. He would simply have him fly straight up while wearing the wing cap. Oh, and for Side Special Cape, instead of him just swiping the cape, it could be a Cape Glide, where he jumps up in the air a little bit and glides straight forwards while equipping the cap

I'm a little disappointed in this moveset redesign personally. Down special ground pound when there are two others that use it, no changes to aerials ot tilts, another roll dash attack when Mario has more unique options, changing down and forward smash to cappy when he has other options. I'm not really feeling it.
