the thing that bothers me I thinkt the most about Snowflake and Safespace is that their powers are so random, like.... they're supposed to be twins, they look alike, and then their powers not only are lame but also unrelated?? what do ice shurikens have to do with force fields? wouldn't it make more sense if they could, I don't know, both create something from ice but use it in different ways? or if they could both create force fields but one of them could only use them to attack and the other one only to protect? I don't know, I just had to talk about this because it's just making me nuts
@EmperorMegas4 жыл бұрын
In fairness, I don't think we understand everything about how they came to have powers. And I don't think their powers are really lame, honestly. Ice and force manipulation certainly aren't mundane or useless powers after all. Iceman and Vindicator have similar powers and they were heavy hitters, the former far more than the latter, of course. Actually, Vindicator's abilities to manipulate geothermal energy allows her to use heat and cold in various ways as well as to create forcefeilds. Not entirely unlike the powers of Snowflake and Safespace respectively.
@DrMike184 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are twins but their powers have nothing to do with each other. She can alter the fabric of reality and he can run fast.
@yanggang74 жыл бұрын
Their powers are actually fairly complimentary (one has all the defensive abilities, while the other is all offense). In fact, they've got a very similar dynamic to Cloak and Dagger. And the nature of Safespace's powers in particular mean that they'll likely be fighting as a matched set most of the time. I do think that Snowflake's using ice to form their shurikens rather than some other material (like the same force energy Safespace manipulates) was an oversight, but I assume it was kept that way in order for the name to make sense.

@@davidx.1504 I don't think it would be as much as a binder. I don't remember a comic book character who uses a fanny pack or other bag that big and that loose on them while out on missions, so it may be too big to even comport with superhero comic laws. I can see some extra straps and stuff being added to keep it more stable in high movement scenarios, but it would've been good to incorporate those into the redesign from the get go, imo. I do feel like a problem with the emerging representation of nonbinary characters in media is that they've all been the same "kind" of nonbinary person thus far -- a largely androgynous but masculine-leaning flat-chested afab person with short hair. It's been really pushing an image of nonbinary as some trans lite category of trans people almost as a direct response to caricatures of nonbinary people in order to make it more palatable to a cis audience, as if a nonbinary person couldn't just as feasibly be someone who presents flamboyantly with a glitterbeard and bright lipstick or even be someone who doesn't present androgynously in any shape or form, both of which seem like near opposites but are equally controversial images of nb people due to the perceived performativity of their gender identity and/or expression to hop on some sort of transtrending train.

I hate when writers have a character be “gay” but literally don’t allow that to effect any part of their personality or expression. And then they pass that off as good representation because “ it doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight, we’re all the same! “
@L013-r9y4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, some writers don't seem to realize that being LGBT+ affects your life. A lot of bad representation is either characters that have no defining traits/interest/personality beyond being a minority (like Snowflake), or characters like you've described, where there's literally no discussion about the effects being a minority has on a person's life. Real gay people aren't defined by being gay, but it does have a big impact on your life experiences, and writers need to realize that!

I think that "diversity for diversity's sake" isn't even a bad thing - it's when there's nothing else to the character that the problems arise. I would argue that there's nothing bad, and in fact it's good, for a creator to look at a character they created who could be any race, any gender, any sexuality, and choose to make them a member of a marginalized group along any or all of those axes for literally no other reason than to have a more diverse cast - but that can only be done to someone who already has a personality and a purpose in the story outside of their race/gender/sexuality. You also can do characters whose personality / purpose in the story IS defined by their race/gender/sexuality, but in that case it can't be "diversity for diversity's sake" and you need to go into it with a clear goal and message in mind. So I would argue that neither characters who are diverse for diversity's sake, nor characters who are largely defined by their marginalized identity, are bad - it's only when BOTH things are applied to the SAME character, such as seems to have been the case with Snowflake and Safespace, at least at first glance, that problems arise.
@totagarboua85404 жыл бұрын
THIS!! A story like this should have written these characters personalities, then based their superpowers on their personalities, and then their physical design on the outline they’ve already built for the character. Since you already have a map for the character, you can put them in these storylines regarding their gender/sexuality/race and they can have actual reactions and responses and opinions and not just be all ‘gAy RiGhTs lOl’

PREACH! Just tacking on labels onto your character just so you can say you are "sooo supportive" of the LGBTQIA+ community is insulting at best. It's vapid, it's shallow, anyone can see through it other than the absolute most ignorant of people. I want a DEEP meaningful character who has a real story and grit behind them. Me as a gay man who grew up bullied, kicked, spat on and so much more growing up... has SO much more to my story than just that! It drives me absolutely bonkers when people boil everything about myself to that one aspect. I am first and foremost a PERSON, being gay is an ASPECT. My identity is so much more.

I agree with you. The very fact that the original designs for Safespace and Snowflake had these basic colour schemes and very similar silhouette speaks to tokenism. The very fact that they're grouped together and described in the same shallow way and they wear the same costumes speaks to that. They are the queer™ characters and are indistinguishable. But everyone has their own experiences in this community, you can't bundle them up like this. This is where I would like to (respectfully) disagree on the definition of diversity for the sake of diversity. I think that writing parts to represent a group is important and good, and I don't think *that* is diversity for the sake of diversity. I define it as that corporate shallowness you referred to. Take for example Dumbledore (Here we go again) His dynamic and relationship with Grindewald could have been interesting as an exploration of character and it could've functioned into his motivations and the way he is. But nope, we get no representation apart from author's note in an interview from 2007. We shouldn't settle for just any representation but for *good* representation. Why should I feel represented by the GayBestFriend™ that's in every romantic movie. That's where I think my opinion lies. There's good representation and then there's representation for the sake representation. (tokenism and shallowness) Does any of this make sense? IDK. Please correct me if I'm wrong/if I misunderstood, I genuinely am curious to see your thoughts as well
@yraco12324 жыл бұрын
Something else that I think is relevant is that problems also arise from the complete opposite end of the character spectrum. If there's nothing else to the character then that's obviously poor representation but it is arguably the same when it's barely a feature of the character. Some representation feels like it was written to be a straight white man then changed to be something else for the sake of representation without actually thinking about how that character might view the world a little differently (it doesn't have to be majorly different but show some minor things). The trope of "bury your gays" fits into this as well where the representation isn't featured because they are killed or otherwise removed from a story early on. Basically, there needs to be a healthy balance where a character's race/gender/sexuality is acknowledged but not all there is to them.

When people say that "any diversity is forced diversity", I have to wonder if they think majority=default? I don't think having a non cishet white person is specifically done just for the sake of having a non cishet white person, it's for the sake of having a person. I feel like, in American media, everyone being a majority would have to be more forced than not everyone being a majority.

We've progressed a lot but a lot of people still see the "default" human as a white, cishet, neurotypical man. There isn't a default human you can be, because all of these different people exist. Just because there's a majority, doesn't mean it's the default. I hope that we can progress more so that people don't get angry whena more diverse person exists on the screen

Who says that though? People dislike the medias "diversity", which basically boils down to stereotypical token characters with no personality outside of their identity. What people want is for the media to make a character interesting first and make them gay/trans/black second. They don't want someone making a boring character and then screaming that "oh look they happen to be female" to get attention points, because that kind of behaviour is insulting to the very people that the character is supposed to represent.
@miniamo_4 жыл бұрын
@@doombybbr Here's the thing though- that's a good point, and I totally agree with you, but the people I'm talking about won't care. They see the existence of a diverse character, no matter what their actual characterization outside of that is, and they say you're "shoving x down their throat". To them, a cishet white male COULD have filled the role that character is occupying, and therefore any diversity was unnecessary and forced. And if, for some reason, a cishet white male COULDN'T have filled the role, the role itself is deemed unnecessary and forced to them. I see so many people across multiple social media platforms and even in real life who think this way, so I don't even know where to begin on the "who thinks this" bit. My short answer would be "too many". I've seen a few, very few people actually just straight up say the statement, but most people you ask when presented like this will probably say they disagree, only to let their actions prove otherwise.

All the indepth thought you have given to these designs is something that career designers should take notes on especially when designing for marginalised minorities. @RoryColle4 жыл бұрын
Definitely an improvement, even if I already loved the older designs, the new ones are just way sleeker and more modern and edgy, but still look like something that could be made at home by a couple of teens. I also really like your take on the characters' personalities, I can see Snowflake insisting on making both costumes just so they can make sure that their sibling looks cool enough to be seen around them! Super pumped to see if you do all the characters, I personally think you could do something very interesting with Screentime and B-Negative in particular, Screen seems to be basically the worst concept offensiveness of the twins aside, and B-Negative just seems made for your goth aesthetic!

I really like the shift to cyberpunk, and the clean and distinct silhouettes are really doing it for me. My only real criticism would be colour - from a cyberpunk perspective it works, but in terms of superhero design I feel like the muted colours lose a bit of pop. I feel like if I imagine these characters in the context of a superhero team, a fight scene or crowd scene could be a bit visually indistinct. It works better for Snowflake imo because they have quite a unique silhouette and a big block of colour in terms of the cape, but particularly with Safespace I think from a distance when these characters aren't the focus of the scene they might drop into the background a bit. I would have liked to see maybe a couple of big panels of pink on him, or maybe bring up the main colour of his suit from black to like a dark magenta so the pink accents still pop but there's some brightness to it, both because superheroes have a tendency to colourful costumes for a storytelling reason and because from what I see about his character he seems like quite a bright airy person in contrast to maybe the edgier angrier vibe his sibling has, and it would be cool to see that reflected in colour as well as form. Altogether though I really love these designs (and the tip about loose blocking for costume design is really useful! I will be carrying that into future work!)

As an nb person with a binary trans brother, it's really hard when my family have been really accepting to him and won't even acknowledge my identity (I've been told that nb isn't real and that I#m just a snowflake by my closest sibling)- most of them also won't acknowledge that I'm autistic either (I've been told that I'm not disabled on multiple occasions). If I had proper representation, it'd do so much for me because I could get my family to watch it, to understand that character and be able to say 'hey, that's me, treat me how they're being treated', and it would be a gamechanger for me

I’m not much of a commenter but I just wanted to add that there are, or at least have been until the very recent past, people who don’t discover their own identity not because of repression but because of lack of awareness. This is probably less true for trans people because of the dysphoria but growing up in Oklahoma I didn’t even realize anything other than cisgendered straight people existed until I was in the seventh grade and then I suddenly made a lot more sense to myself... that’s also part of the power of representation.

@rainingwhenidie4 жыл бұрын
yeah. Either someone just makes a diverse character for brownie points (most media tbh), or so many people hate on a type of media for having a diverse character like those people don't actually exist. I'm not trans or black, but I'm bi and neurodivergent and the lack of good rep for autistic and bi people is infuriating, so I can't imagine what it's like for someone who's poc and/or trans/nonbinary. Then, the mainstream representation isn't that good or it just holds some prejudiced stereotype that doesn't really help the cause. I hope that in the future this gets better and that lgbt, disabled, and poc people get better representation and don't just get used for goodboy points. We need more "this character is poc and lgbt and it affects their life, but it's not their only personality trait and they're a very fleshed out character that could be a realistic person" and less of "This character who's sexualiy I did not mention throughout the entire story at all, has been gay the entire time. Am I inclusive yet?" or "this character is gay, look at how gay they are, they're the gay best friend, isn't it so cool that they're super gay?"

These re-redesigns are wonderful! They look like characters you want to know more about. The originals look like blank-slate background characters whose role within a story is always going to be tied to each other. But these outfits look like what two siblings would come up with to coordinate with one another while still each having their own style. They look like characters that are related but who each have independent lives.

Since your last video I started watching some more re designs of these two, and the amount of people who used she/her pronouns for snowflake was... sad. As a non-binary person myself I know that not all non-binary people use they/them (or any other neutral pronoun), but it was blatently clear that these people just didn't want this character to be non-binary in their design, maybe not explicitly but still. Although I don't really see myself within your desgin of snowflake head cannon wise, I definitely know others who would. And to add to that I relate to your design more so than any other I've seen, especially having a afab non-binary character with a flat chest, yet isn't hyper masc. I love your re redesign and though I agree with most of what you said here and in your previous video I think that is a bit too soon to judge this characters as much as they have been. I mean, there so many ways to "fix" this characters inside the comics itself, like, I don't know, safespace is a tipical jock, what if this came from a big brother trying too hard to be accepting, just random idea that well written can fix this, mostly because it can lead to new and better designs, I mean, they are bad, but ultimately the design is just a part of the chsracters, the other is their story. What really make thing that this characters are not as horrible as people making them out to be is funnily enough is the Internet gas, that is a clear throwback to the superhero origin from the golden age. Beside that, I really loved hearing you talk about representation. Representation's value is something that have always been difficult to me. I don't know, even when I love finding gay and bi guys in tv(and you already know how few bi representation there is out there),that never affected my expectations for myself. I could be that accepting my bisexuality has always been the least of my problems (I have really big problems with anxiety).
